Chapter Eight - Shapeshifter
I'm going to see if I can go off on my own for once. It'll be nice not having a babysitter. It's kind of hard to meet guys when you have a chaperone following you around.
- snippet of an email from Kristy Thomas to Dawn Schafer
"Here we are!" The Doctor said, excitedly bouncing around the control room. "Bustling little metropolis; just the place for you to find those gifts you've been meaning to buy your friends and family. I know this excellent little shop you can get miniature songbirds that actually take requests! Come on, we'll see if we can get you a discou-"
"Um, do you think I can check out the place on my own?" Kristy interrupted. "You know, just as a change of pace?"
He deflated a little. "On your own?"
"I'll be careful," she promised.
"I'm not sure..."
"It's just that I could meet more people if you weren't with me." Kristy shrugged, looking a little embarrassed. People meaning males, then.
"But..." The Doctor frowned. "I'd just feel better if we stayed together..."
"Doctor, I'll be fine." Kristy's tone went from hesitant to forceful in the space of a few seconds.
He sighed, knowing she'd just get upset if he kept arguing with her. "Alright, just, don't stray far?"
She smiled and grabbed a bag she must've packed earlier, something he hadn't noticed. He started to shuffle to her for her customary hug. Before she left anywhere, to visit her family or for clandestine visits to Mary Anne when Chad wasn't home, she'd give him a warm hug and promised she'd be back.
This time, she just swung the bag over her shoulder and headed out the door with a smile. "See ya!"
"Be safe." He tried not to look as miserable as he felt. Apparently this new form of goodbye was another consequence of the kiss they'd shared a few weeks ago. Since that moment, she'd been true to her word of trying to let him go. She didn't touch him as much as she used to or gently tease him.
She was no less friendly than she had been but some of the old warmth was missing. He didn't look up to find her gazing at him with an inscrutable look on her face anymore.
Trotting off, she called, "I will!" over her shoulder. "Be back in a few hours!"
~*~
Several hours later, Kristy strode up to him, sans bag. "H'lo, Doctor Man!" she greeted him with a big, dumb grin.
"Hello," The Doctor said, neutrally.
"So what adventures are we in for today?" She rubbed her hands together, bouncing on the heels of her feet. "Any bits of shiny lying around someplace?"
He gave her a look. "Beg pardon?"
Kristy looked nervous a second and then burst into fake-sounding laughter. "Oh, c'mon, I'm totally kidding." She slapped his arm lightly. "So what is the plan today?"
"Mmmm, well I thought we'd do a little exploring on an ice planet. What do you say?" The Doctor watched her carefully.
"You mean leave?" she asked, slightly panicked. " But... I like it here! Can't we explore here?"
"No, we're leaving. Very shortly in fact."
"We can't."
"And why not?"
"Because... um... I just ordered a wonderian snargleblaster and it's not ready yet. I've been meaning to try one of those for awhile now."
"Really?" The Doctor folded his arms. "What's it do?"
"It's a drink. Some of the local color recommended it to me. Nice people. Maybe I should live here!" she added, nodding enthusiastically.
"Maybe you should," The Doctor said a little darkly.
"Well, withyou of course." Taking his hands, she gave him a big phony smile. "I can't go anywhere without my Doctor."
"No, I thought maybe you should live here... alone, because you're not Kristy!" Furious, The Doctor held his sonic screwdriver on the imposter.
"Whoa! Whoa whoa whoa!" She held her hands up, voice going low before switching to Kristy's usual tone. "I am so Kristy, what the hell is your problem??"
"I have a problem with shape-shifters impersonating my friend! Now where is she?"
"Shape-shifters?" The imposter laughed unconvincingly "That's... that's crazy. I'm Kristy. See? Ponytail? Pouty lips? Kicky sneakers? Sexy little midriff..." The imposter rubbed his hands over Kristy's stomach that she'd lately taken to exposing with shirts that sort of gave up and stopped having fabric a few inches below her breasts. "God, look at this tummy. I could eat chocolate off of this all day... watch her squirm around and giggle...."
The Doctor snapped his fingers, barely keeping his temper. "Hello? My friend? Where is she?"
Giving up, the imposter sighed. "My gang has her. I was supposed to impersonate her to get that." He nodded at the sonic screwdriver.
"Mmm, of course." The Doctor stuck it back in his pocket. "I really think we should take a stroll to retrieve my friend, don't you?"
"On one condition!" the shape-shifter blurted.
Rolling his eyes, The Doctor said, "Oh, this should be good. Alright, what's your condition?"
"Take me with you."
He laughed outright at that bit of nonsense. "Oh, you are too much! You kidnap my friend, try to steal my screwdriver, and now you want to tag along?"
"If I help you get her back, I'm turning against my brothers," the imposter said seriously. "If I'm lucky, they'll kill me. I can't... I can't be around after we get Kristy back. Since I'm doing you a favor, can't you do me one? Please?" Desperate, the shapeshifter started to unbutton Kristy's top. "Here, you can look at her boobs if you want!"
Feeling slightly ill, The Doctor waved his hands. "Alright, alright, hold it! Have you no respect? Take off her face and body and put your own back. We'll go rescue her and I'll see for myself how ruthless these brothers of yours are before I make a final decision."
"Um, I can't," the shape-shifter said, nervously. "If they see me with you as me, they'll know I ratted them out. I gotta keep wearing Kristy Thomas' pretty face or I'm screwed." Looking afraid, he folded his arms as if protecting himself from a chill.
The Doctor rolled his eyes, long since having had enough. "Fine, let's go already."
"Okay," the shape-shifter said sullenly and started to lead the way. "My name's Gil by the way."
"Really don't care," The Doctor all but growled.
~*~
Gil's hideout was in a dilapidated corner of the city and was an old boarding house that had long ago gone to seed. Trash was strewn about everywhere and the porch was rotting, The Doctor's Converse-clad foot nearly going through one of the boards.
Once inside, a horrible screaming made them both wince. They looked into the living room in time to see some poor hapless creature being flayed alive.
"You see?" one of the flayers boomed. "Do you see what happens when you don't make payments on time?!"
"Just keep walking," Gil said, sounding spooked. "We've got Kristy stashed downstairs." As he walked, he changed back into his original form: A dark-haired youth with a goatee and loose-fitting clothing.
Gil led them to the back of the old boarding house, where he opened a door falling off its hinges and led The Doctor down the stairs to the basement. In the center of the room stood a stone table. Kristy was chained to it and she wasn't moving.
The Doctor hurried to her side as she started to move sluggishly. She'd been drugged, obviously as an attempt to keep her under control. His Kristy was a fighter, as the gang had no doubt discovered.
"I've been keeping watch over her, making sure no one does anything to her," Gil said, quietly. "She's kinda vulnerable right now as you can see."
"Can we keep the chatter to a minimum?" The Doctor snapped. "Unchain her."
"Oh. Right. Yeah, hang on." Gil got the keys off the wall and returned to unlock Kristy's shackles. The action made her stir and moan, eyes fluttering open
The Doctor leaned over her, wanting the first thing she saw to be him. "You ok, Kristy?"
To his everlasting horror, she started crying. Weak, tired little sobs shook her tiny form. He'd always known she'd been small but not how tiny... "Don't do that again," she begged. "It's not funny."
"It's really him, Kris," Gil told her, then could barely meet The Doctor's accusing stare. "Some of the guys got a kick out of pretending to be you and making her think she was getting rescued."
Anger coursed hot through his veins but instead of laying into Gil the way he would've liked, he returned his attention to Kristy. "Everything's alright now," he said softly, tracing a finger over her neck. "We're getting out of here."
"Fought 'em," Kristy mumbled. "I fought good but... too many."
The Doctor gently took her hands and eased her into a sitting position. "Oh, I'll bet you fought wonderfully. Let's go. Put your arm across my shoulders now."
"Kay." She slid her arm across his shoulders as he helped her to her feet. "Knew you'd find me."
"I always do," he said with a small smile.
"Yeahhhh." They started to shuffle along slowly and Kristy looked around in a panic. "Gil? Gil!"
"Right here, Kris," Gil was quick to reassure her. "We're getting you out of here."
Kristy relaxed. "Okay. Gil's my friend," she explained to The Doctor.
"So I've heard. Come on, one foot in front of the other."
"Mmmmf. This is harder than I remember." She stumbled as they reached the stairs and The Doctor caught her before she crumbled to her feet.
Gil heaved a frustrated sigh. "This is taking too long." Rudely, he jerked her out of The Doctor's arms and hefted her up into his. "Let's go. If we get stopped, I'll do the talking."
"I'm sure you can come up with some brilliant lies. Lead on."
Kristy looped her arms around Gil's neck and lifted her head to stare over his shoulder at The Doctor. She smiled hazily at him. "Hi, you."
"Hello." The Doctor smiled.
She stared at him, looking utterly enchanted. "Always so pretty..."
"Well I do have this 'dashing' thing going for me."
"Yeaaaaah. I like your eyes." She dropped her cheek to Gil's shoulder and continued to stare at The Doctor dreamily
Once they reached the top of the stairs, they made it a few steps before someone growled, "Gil. Hold it."
The Doctor and Gil froze and Kristy whimpered. Turning, they saw a short, wiry man with a black eye and split lip glaring at them with his one good eye. "The hell you think you're going with her?"
Gil didn't even hesitate. "Roc and me are taking her upstairs. Have a little fun, see how far she lets The Doctor chap go."
While revolted by this cover story, The Doctor was relieved to see that the gang member believed it and grunted, moving off into the kitchen eating area where he started bellowing at someone to make him something.
Then they slipped out the front door and were on their way back to the TARDIS, simple as that.
~*~
Once they were safely on board, Gil said hopefully, "So... can I come with you guys, then? I bet you could use a shapeshifter during your wacky adventures, right?"
"Just a minute," The Doctor told him impatiently and then adopted a more gentle tone. "Kristy? We're going to lay you down in bed so you can sleep off the medication, alright?"
"That sounds aweeeeesome." She smiled happily.
Gil followed The Doctor to Kristy's room and set her gently on the bed. The Doctor lingered a moment to run a hand over her forehead and she reached up weakly and grabbed his hand. "Stay with me?"
The Doctor sat down on the edge of the bed. "You're safe now, Kristy. I'll be right here with you."
"Promise?" she asked in a little voice.
"Promise," he said, and stayed with her even after she'd fallen asleep.
~*~
Once he was sure Kristy wasn't going to wake up again, The Doctor ushered Gil back out to the main room.
"I have no desire to keep you around," he said, bluntly. "But seeing as how you protected Kristy during her ordeal, I suppose I should show some courtesy to you. Just don't push my generosity."
"Oh, I won't," Gil said quickly. "You can count on that. I'll... I'll always look out for her." He nodded and looked longingly toward the room they'd left her in.
"Right, well we all know she needs all the looking after she can get." The Doctor fiddled with dials, already feeling like he'd made the wrong decision.
