Day Six - Saturday
Chad was crossing the lobby that morning when he heard someone call, “Hey. Hey!” Stopping, he turned and saw Mary Anne’s friends (no sign of Mary Anne) in a cluster across the room. A tall blonde who he remembered Mary Anne telling him was her sister, Dawn, walked up to him, shoulders squared.
Uh oh.
“Your name's Danny, right?" Dawn asked, knowing full well the answer.
“Uh, right,” Chad said, feeling guilty that he was lying to yet another young woman.
"Don't hurt my sister, Danny. Or I'll have to hurt you."
He looked her up and down doubtfully. "Understood."
"Oh, I might not look like much. But I have five other people for back up." She nodded over to the group and the girls all raised their eyebrows at him and not that he’d admit it to anyone but they actually made a good attempt at looking menacing.
Chad nodded his understanding. "Right. Well I have some lightbulbs to replace. You girls have a good day now."
Dawn held his gaze a moment, keeping up her intimidating demeanor and then went back to join her friends. As he left the lobby and walked down the hallway to the bathrooms, he could feel six pairs of eyes burning holes into his back.
His heart leapt when the ladies room door opened and Mary Anne stepped out. Her face lit up at the sight of him. "Hey, Danny the Brave Snake Shooer."
"Hey, Mary Anne,” he said, warmly.
She pulled a handful of postcards out of her purse to show him. "I've been putting off mailing these. I'm going to do it when me and my friends go into town today." Swaying close to him, she said softly, "I'll miss you."
He bent his head down, letting his lips hover a centimeter from hers. "I'll miss you too."
One of her little hands rose up to trace the long scar on his forehead. The motion reminded him of the last time she’d been in his bed. She’d woken up in the night and left sweet kisses along the scar until he’d woken up.
“What happened here?” she cooed, nuzzling him.
“Cut myself,” he’d said.
She sighed but smiled at him brightly in the darkness of his room. “Fine, Daniel. Keep your secrets.”
Now she gave him a warm, clinging kiss and pulled back a little to teasingly say, "Nuh uh."
"You don't think I will?" Chad challenged her.
"Not with those lady auxiliary members I saw checking in earlier running about!" She fanned herself with her postcards jokingly. “Muy caliente!”
Chad rolled his eyes. "I think I can resist."
"Are you sure? They look like they've been around the block." Mary Anne looked up at him with mock seriousness. "I bet they put out."
"Even so, they're really not my type."
"Blue hair and mustaches aren't your type? Now I've heard everything!"
Laughing, he gave her behind a swat. "Go on with your friends. I'll see you later."
She giggled and walked by him. "See ya, Danny."
“Bye.” He turned to watch her go and grinned so widely his face hurt when she turned to walk backwards and blew him a kiss.
~*~
Dreamily, Mary Anne mailed off her postcards and thought of Danny. She’d promised him all the kisses he could get last night and she’d barely given him any so far. When she got back to the resort, she’d get him to lay down on his bed and she’d kiss him all over. She doubted she’d have to twist his arm.
“Excuse me, miss?” She was ripped out of her yummy fantasy by a kind-faced bald man. Judging by his accent, he was American.
“Yes?”
“Could you tell me if you’ve seen this man?” He handed her a piece of paper and her stomach clenched up.
It was Danny. Chad Shelten according to the paper. He looked a bit different; no facial hair or scar on his forehead. Her hands started to shake and she looked up at the man.
“Is… is he dangerous?”
Misinterpreting her fear, the man said, “He’s a big guy but he’s not wanted for a violent crime… Well, he did knock out the cop holding him but he didn’t kill him, which he certainly could have. No, my client has a personal axe to grind with Mr. Shelten and would like to see him brought to justice.”
Mary Anne swallowed. “I’m staying at a resort here. Maybe… if you give me a few of those fliers I can put some up? Maybe someone else has seen him?”
The man smiled at her and handed her a few. “Thanks, that makes my job easier. I know he’s somewhere around here, based on the tracking I’ve done so far. That or he’s a little east. Either way, I can catch this guy and get back home to my daughter.”
“Sure. Glad to help.” Mary Anne managed a shaky smile at the man and went outside where she automatically burst into tears.
~*~
Chad was stocking the closet with more light bulbs when Mary Anne came running to him, looking panicked. "Danny, I need to talk to you!"
"Sure. What's wrong?" He raised his eyebrows when she grabbed his arm and pulled him into the closet, shutting the door. The light was dim, the only source being from the slits near the bottom of the door. “What’s going on?”
She held up his wanted poster, eyes filling up with tears. "They're going to find you. You have to run.”
Eyes wide, Chad took the flier from her. “Oh, shit.”
"The investigator was at the post office putting these up. It's only a matter of time before someone recognizes you." She sniffled.
Why was she warning him? "Mary Anne... don't you want to know what I did?"
She shook her head and wrapped her arms around his neck. "I don't care. It doesn't matter." Her kiss tasted of desperation. “I love you anyway.”
The words felt so good to hear but he knew he didn’t deserve them as he pulled her close. "You barely know me though."
“Yeah, I know.” She looked up into his face. “…Chad.”
"I wanted to tell you that first night, but... you would ask why I lied." He looked away from her guiltily.
Mary Anne ran her hand over his hair. "I know. You tried to tell me but..." She bit her lip. "You have to go, baby."
"I do."
More tears spilled down her cheeks. "Th-the investigator says that he's heading east from here. S-so don't go east."
Chad sighed. “Thank you, Mary Anne.”
Nodding, she let him go and opened the closet door. But he couldn’t let it end like this and he reached out to pull the door shut, stopping her.
"Wait. I'm so sorry you got sucked into this."
"It was worth it,” she said, hugging him. “Just to know you."
"Same here." He cupped her face, getting a long, last look at her.
"What if... I came with you?"
"I can't have that. It's dangerous."
"And you hardly know me,” she said, as if she’d been expecting that answer.
"It feels like I do though." And it was painful to sever this instant, deep connection he’d felt with her but he had to.
"I feel the same way..." Mary Anne’s smile was lovely but watery.
Chad tilted her face up and kissed her long and deep. It took two attempts before he was able to let her go. "I'm sorry."
Then he opened the door and vanished.
~*~
Mary Anne curled up in a ball on her bed, crying until her throat felt raw. Yes, she’d miss him terribly but now she’d be worried for him as well. Out there all alone in a foreign country, not knowing anybody and not knowing the language.
He’d be so lonely.
She turned this over in her mind several times before sitting up, drying her tears, and getting out pen and paper to write the most difficult letter of her life.
~*~
Chad packed his things quickly, keeping his mind focused on his task or his heart would snap in two thinking of leaving Mary Anne behind. He’d spent the last fifteen minutes talking his asshole boss into giving him his pay early, so he had some money. Who knew how long that would last, though.
He’d have to find another resort to work; he didn’t know Spanish so working anywhere else was out of the question. They could rob him blind and he’d be too stupid to know any better.
There was a soft knock at his door and he stiffened. The police wouldn’t knock like that, would they? Maybe if he ignored it, they’d go away, whoever they were. But then the knock came a little harder and Chad went to the door, carefully opening it.
"Mary Anne? What are you...?"
She looked up at him with sad puppy eyes. "Please let me come with you. I don’t want you to be alone.”
He ushered her inside quickly before anyone could see; he didn’t know who else had met that private investigator after all. "What about your friends and family?"
“I left my friends a note so they should be fine. They've seen you with me and they know you won't hurt me. As for my family..." She took a deep breath. "Dad's had twenty one years with me. It's time for him to let me go."
Shocked, Chad could only stare at her. She couldn’t be serious, could she? "You really want to do this? It'll be dangerous."
"I've always played it safe; I want to live a little." She took a step closer to him. “With you.”
Elated, Chad kissed her. “Okay.” He went back to packing, hoping she already had her stuff together because he didn’t have time to dick around.
"Which would you rather I call you? Danny or Chad?" She sat down on the bed next to his suitcase, watching him pack.
"Chad, please. But Danny in public."
“Okay. Chad.” She smiled at him sweetly. "Do I need a new name, too?"
"I think so. What do you want to be called?"
"Hmmm,” she murmured, thinking. It took only a few more moments before she came up with, “Tess.”
Smiling, Chad closed his suitcase. "Tess. Danny and Tess. I like it."
"Chad and Mary Anne. I like it." Mary Anne stood up and smoothed her skirt down as Chad lifted his bag.
“That too. Okay, let’s go.”
Outside, he saw two of Mary Anne’s bags all packed and ready. Taking a deep breath, he led her to his car and helped her inside, hardly believing that she was actually running away with him.
