Day Five - Friday

"I'm sorry to interrupt you but could you get this on my back for me? I can't reach."

Chad looked up from the lounge chair he was cleaning and grinned at Mary Anne who oh-so-innocently waved a bottle of sunblock at him.

"No problem." He stood up and took the bottle from her, squeezing the lotion into his hands to warm it first before rubbing it - more like massaging it - into her back.

She mewled and the sound brought back images of the previous night in his mind. Bending down, he whispered huskily into her ear, “Like that?”

"Yeaaaaah." She whimpered.

He ran his hands down her sides slowly, caressing her smooth skin. "Can't let you burn."

"Nooooo. Huh uh." She tipped her head forward and moaned. "You have such nice hands, Danny."

He grinned wickedly. "The better to touch you with, my dear."

"When do you get off work?" she asked almost desperately.

"Five."

Turning, she gave him a hot kiss that immediately made him want to take her right there, forget the other guests who’d see. "Come find me,” she whispered once she’d pulled away, pupils dilated.

"Oh, you bet I will,” he growled.

~*~

"DANNNYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!"

Chad jumped and dropped the stick he was using to try to jimmy the cane jammed up in the pop machine and sprinted outside to the pool area. Mary Anne was screaming and he had to help her.

"What?! What's wrong?"

Hysterically crying, she pointed to a little snake curled up on the ground in front of her lounge chair. That couldn’t be it, could it? Really?

"You're afraid of the snake?"

"Danny, please make it go awaaaayyy!!" She covered her face, shuddering.

"Ok, ok, easy now. I'll just go get a broom and push it away,” he said soothingly and went do do just that. When he came back, Mary Anne had curled up in a ball, burying her face in her knees as she cried.

Feeling a little bad for the snake, he poked at it with the broom until it seemed to say Fuck this shit and slithered off someplace where it could snooze in peace.

"There, it's gone, sweetie. You can open your eyes now." Chad sat down on the end of the lounge chair and rubbed her leg comfortingly.

She looked up, all big-eyed and teary. "It-it's gone?"

“It’s gone.” He nodded.

Mary Anne threw herself into his arms, kissing him all over his face. "You were so brave!"

"It wasn't that difficult,” he said, chuckling.

She kept right on kissing him, not that he was complaining. "Well I couldn't have done it. Such a brave boy."

He grinned. "Anything for my lady."

"My sweet, brave baby." She hugged him, tucking her head under his chin. "I'm never going outside again."

"Aww, c'mon, don't say that."

"Never ever. Too many creepy crawlies."

Chad hugged her tightly and rubbed her back. "Well I'll protect you. How about that?"

"You'll protect me from the creepy crawlies?" She sat back and looked at him bravely, nodding. "Kay. I won't hide in my room for the rest of my visit, then."

Grinning, he lightly knocked her chin with a knuckle. “Good!”

"I still wanna go inside anyways. That's what I was trying to do when Mr. Snake showed up. Ughhh." Shuddering delicately, she reached down to pick up her jean shorts and shook them out in case anymore visitors had hidden in them. And because the universe had a sense of humor, her cautious shaking revealed a little black spider. "EWWWWWWWWWW!!"

"Whoa, it's ok! Just a little spider."

"I know, but now my nerves are shot." Trembling, she started to tear up again as she continued to shake her shorts in case the spider hadn’t been the only one nestled inside.

Tenderly, Chad wrapped his arm around her. "It's ok. I'll take you inside."

Before taking her up to her room, he finished getting the cane out of the soda machine and left it at the front desk for one of the disgruntled geriatrics to pick up when they needed it. Then he held out his arm for Mary Anne to take, which she did with a smile and he took her up to her room.

He had every intention of leaving her there but she looked up at him with those eyes of hers and asked him to come inside.

“I don’t know…”

"There could be a snake in my bed!"

"Do you need me to check under the sheets?"

She nodded, all wide-eyed innocence, and Chad couldn’t say no to her. They went inside and he felt the blankets on her bed and looked all over. "No snakes here."

"Are you sure? Maybe you aren't looking hard enough."

Getting on his knees on the bed, Chad tossed the sheets back. "Nope, none here at all."

Giggling, Mary Anne pounced onto his back and he gripped her behind her knees, chuckling. "Wow, I had no idea that was coming!"

Mary Anne kissed his shoulder. "Because I'm cunning!"

"Boy, I'll say!" He smiled warmly at her once she’d slid off his back and lay down on the bed.

Craning her neck around, she looked at the clock on the bedside table. "You've been off the clock for five minutes now. Wanna take a nap here with me until dinner?"

“Mmm hm.” Chad settled down beside her, gathering her close.

"You're the sweetest man I've ever met, Danny Mitchell,” she whispered, eyes sparkling.

Guilt gnawed at his insides. "You've only known me a few days."

She traced a finger down his cheek, face serious. "I know what I see. And you're an amazing man. I wish I could take you with me back to LA."

Oh, you and me both, sweetheart. He kissed her forehead. “Naptime,” he reminded her and closed his eyes.

“Brave teddy bear,” he heard her whisper, making him smile. “Falling so in…”

His eyes flew open but she’d drifted off, a sweet expression of bliss on her face. She couldn’t already be falling in love with him, could she? It’d only been a few days. Of course, he was feeling the same way but… She was going to leave soon and he’d be without her.

Troubled, it took him a little longer to fall asleep.

~*~

Usually Mary Anne was so punctual but this Danny character was becoming a bad influence. He’d probably kept her up all last night and that was why she wasn’t with the rest of the BSC, ready to eat.

Sighing in exasperation, Dawn opened the door to the room she was sharing with Mary Anne and stopped in her tracks at what she saw.

Sprawled across one of the beds was Mary Anne. The handyman had her wrapped up protectively in his arms, their foreheads touching softly as they slept.

Both moved and disconcerted by the sight, Dawn backed up out of the room and shut the door quietly.

~*~

Chad hadn’t seen Mary Anne since they’d woken from their nap and she’d gone to have dinner with her friends. She’d kissed him so softly on the forehead and said she’d come to him later.

Now it was 10:30 and there was no sign of her. He gave up on the paperback he had been trying to read for the last hour and tossed it aside with a sigh. It didn’t bode well for him that only five hours after he’d last seen her, he was this antsy for her company.

So keyed up, he jumped in surprise when his phone rang. Great. The last thing he wanted was for the manager to make him change a fuse some idiot tourist blew cramming too much shit into the electrical outlets.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Danny. It’s me.”

Relaxing, Chad sat back against the pillows. “Mary Anne.”

“Yeah. Mom says I can't come out tonight."

“Mom?” He frowned. Hadn’t she showed up here with just her friends?

"Dawn. My real mother is... dead. Yeah, that wasn't funny." Mary Anne glanced at the bed Dawn was stretched out on writing postcards and was grateful that she was listening to her iPod and hadn’t caught that bit of really bad weirdness. Just to be on the safe side, she moved out to the deck. "But still. I have to spend tonight in my own bed. Paid for the room, I may as well use it."

“Oh okay.” Damn, that was awkward. "How are you?"

“I’m fine,” Mary Anne said, softly. “And you?”

"Oh, good, now that I'm talking to you." He slid his eyes closed, letting the sweet sound of her voice envelop him.

"Did something happen?" she asked, concerned.

"No... it's just been a long day. I'm tired and sore."

"Even after that nice nap you had with me today?" Mary Anne asked teasingly.

Chad chuckled all low and sexy, knowing she liked that. "Even so, I'm afraid."

"I'm sorry. If I were with you right now, I'd rub your back." She glared over her shoulder at Dawn, writing in total innocence.

"Mmm, thanks. It's the thought that counts." The thought of her rubbing his back was really doing it for him.

"Which cabin is yours?” she asked, squinting. “I can't really tell in the dark."

"Uhh, the third one on the left if you're coming out the doors... why? I thought you were staying in your room tonight?" Maybe she was being a little rebel and creeping through the darkened grounds hoping to join him?

"I'm out on our deck. The deck's part of the room,” Mary Anne pointed out, leaning against the rail.

Though disappointed, he laughed a bit. “True.”

"So... which one are you? Could you flicker a light or something?"

“Sure.” Reaching over, Chad flicked the lamp on and off a few times.

Through the murky black of night, Mary Anne saw the light flashing and squealed. "There you are!"

"Sure am. Hi."

"Hi. It's stupid to say that I miss you, isn't it?"

"No."

"Okay. I miss you."

"Miss you too."

Not really believing him, Mary Anne said, "It's just that we don't have that much more time together but..." She hastened to add, "I'll be fine. Don't worry."

"I dunno. This sounds worrisome."

"Oh. Well, okay, I don't really miss you. I just said it because... um."

“Um?” Chad repeated, totally amused.

"I read it on a post card?" she said, feeling lame.

"Did you now?"

She heaved a you caught me sigh. “No.”

"I do miss you. You're easy to miss,” Chad said sincerely.

"You're easy to miss, too. But I can make it through one night." Against her will, Mary Anne’s eyes filled up with tears just thinking of all the other nights to come that she’d be without him.

"Yeah, it's just one night,” Chad said softly, thinking of the future.

"Now that... I know wh-where... excuse me." Not wanting to cry on the phone with him, Mary Anne pulled the phone away to wipe at her tears and let out a little sob before clearing her throat and trying to pull herself together.

"Hey, you ok?" Chad asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine, I just needed to cough." MaryAnne did her best to keep the tears out of her voice but she wasn’t sure how successful she was.

"Oh, okay."

"But um, I was saying that.. now that I know where you are, I can send you your goodnight kiss."

“Ah, okay.” Chad went to the window and pulled the curtains open.

"Ready, baby?"

“Yes.”

Keeping the phone near her mouth so he could hear, she blew a kiss to his cabin. "Got it?"

Chad rested his head against the glass, shutting his eyes. “Sure did.”

"Good. I promise to give you real kisses tomorrow."

"Good. I'll be expecting them."

"How many?"

"As many as I can get."

"That's a lot of kisses, Danny. I hope you can handle it."

"I'll try my best."

"Okay, I should go to bed now. And you too, sleepy boy."

Chad yawned. “Yeah, I guess so.”

"Sweet dreams, baby,” Mary Anne breathed.

"You too. Sleep tight." Chad went back to his bed and got under the covers.

"To protect against bed bugs or Mr. Sandman trying to cop a feel?" she asked playfully.

"Either... or both."

"Okay. Goodnight."

“Night.” He waited for her to hang up.

There was a silence. Then, "...why aren't you hanging up?"

"Umm, why aren't you?" he asked, feeling slightly ridiculous.

"Because I was waiting for you to."

"Oh, okay... so I'll do that, I guess, so we don't become really cheesy."

Mary Anne made a face. "I think it's too late for that."

"Well at least it's our little secret." Chad laughed, then paused and said in his growly voice for her, “Goodnight, sweetheart.”

The sound hit Mary Anne right between the legs and her knees buckled. "Oh god, Danny..."

"Yeah?" he asked, sounding perfectly innocent.

"Sorry. Your voice just... did things."

“Sorry,” he chuckled, not sounding that sorry.

"It's okay. I'll probably have to stop by the bathroom first before bed so- oh my god I can't believe I said that." She dropped her face into her palm.

"Now I need to stop in the bathroom..." Chad confessed, voice low. The thought of her pleasuring herself because of him…

"I wish I could take the phone in with me," Mary Anne said, longingly.

“Yeah,” Chad agreed, thinking of how fun that could be.

"But Dawn would hear." She pouted a little, disappointed. "So I should go now."

He sighed, not really wanting to let her go. “Okay.”

"Night, Danny, I-" She managed to stop herself from saying something stupid. Confessing her love for him would not be the smartest move she ever made. If personal details made him panic, then feelings like that would send him running for the hills.

"Hmm?" Chad wondered why she’d stopped.

“What?” Mary Anne asked, hoping she could play it all off as a misunderstanding. Too late she remembered that she was a bad actress.

"You were gonna say something?"

"I don't think I should." Shut up shut up SHUT UP, the panicky voice in her head told her.

"No, go ahead. What is it?" Chad prompted her.

"I miss you?" Ugh, I give up on you, Mary Anne.

Confused, Chad said, "Yeah, I thought we'd established that."

“We had.” I’m just a doofus who shouldn’t be allowed to say things.

"Okay, well then... I guess this is goodnight... again."

"I'm sorry, I'll really hang up this time. Goodnight and I l- AHHH." When she caught herself almost confessing to him again, Mary Anne decided to quit while she was behind and just hung up.

What the fuck? Chad stared at the phone in his hand and then hung it up. Maybe she wouldn’t be so strange tomorrow. He shut off the lamp and lay down, ready to give sleep a shot.

Mary Anne went back into the room just as Dawn pulled off her headphones. “Ready for bed?”

“Uh huh,” Mary Anne agreed and put her cellphone on the bedside table. Totally embarrassed at herself, she lay down and pulled the pillow over her face. Maybe she wouldn’t be such a weirdo around him tomorrow.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! *dances the dance of exuberant yet cautious joy since she knows what's coming* <---- I didn't mean for that to sound nasty, either. lol. It's totally innocent.

That was so gorram cute about the snake and the cane in the pop machine!!! I'm guessing Kristy is gonna search for info on Chad, if her major didn't change in this section of the crackverse. I know it's completely silly and unrealistic for me to hold out any kind of hope for a happy ending, but... *sigh*

In other words, yes, yes we did. ;)

I'm glad you assured me that you can't write fic without happy endings, because this one has all the signs of a fic that could end in tears of ouch.

Still, they're always so damn adorable. And in love.

*Hugs Mary Ann* I really like Dawn and she has Mary Ann's best interests at heart but stop trying to fight it Woman. Mary Ann and Chad are destined to be, if it isn't carved in stone it ought to be.

It's amazing really that knowing your penchant for happy endings I still get nervous about the outcome.
