Day Four - Thursday

Mary Anne slipped the money into the soda machine and pressed the button for Cherry Coke. Danny was out working in the nasty heat again and she didn’t want him to be too uncomfortable. His favorite soda might put a smile on his face.

So that was something. She knew his favorite soda. Kristy and Dawn could just suck on that. Yesterday’s conversation drifted into her mind and she frowned.

"Mary Anne, we were just wondering about this thing you have with Danny,” Dawn said, looking concerned.

"What about it?" Mary Anne asked, nervously.

"What
about it?!" Kristy repeated incredulously and sent Dawn a Is she for real?!look.

"Umm, well... is-- this is just a fling, right?" Dawn said after glaring at Kristy.

"Yeah." Mary Anne bit her lip, already feeling like a liar. She felt a connection with Danny that wasn’t a mere fling but she couldn’t tell them that and hope for them to understand.

"Ok, well, I just wanted to make sure.” Dawn was obviously relieved. “I mean, you tend to get attached..."

"When do I get attached?" Mary Anne demanded, a little defensive.

Both Kristy and Dawn gave her a look.

Mary Anne folded her arms. "Have I been sleeping with men and obsessing over them without my knowledge?"

"I didn't say obsessing, I said attached,” Dawn said quickly. “Like, when we leave here, are you gonna be ok with ending things with him?"

Yeah, that was something she didn’t really want to think about. "I'm going to have to be."

Dawn looked at her carefully and nodded. “Okay.”

They seemed to be finished but Kristy, as always, had to add her two cents. "But hey, how about you spend some time with us during this trip, huh?"

Shocked, Mary Anne’s jaw dropped. "I spend time with you! We play on the beach and do touristy things every day!"

Kristy seemed to have strayed from the original script as Dawn glared at her again. "What Kristy
meant was, maybe you could eat dinner with us tonight?"

"That's fine,” Mary Anne said stiffly, glaring at Kristy herself. “I have to go get changed.”

As she was walking away, Kristy called after her, "Oh come on, don't get an attitude."

Just like that, Mary Anne exploded. "I don't get why you're picking on
me! Stacey and Claudia have been ditching us to hang with those idiotic frat boys all week!"

Dawn winced. "We know but... well, those guys are our age..."

"I see what this is about now." Mary Anne narrowed her eyes at Kristy, who she knew for a fact was sleeping with her professor. "You have some
damn nerve."

Kristy glanced over at Dawn, who didn’t know, and blushed. "Hey, I'm not the one who said it..."

Looking guilty, Dawn said, "I'm sorry, Mary Anne, I'm just worried about you. What do you really know about this guy you're being intimate with?"

That hit a little too close. Mary Anne stiffened. "What does it matter? It's just a fling, right?"

She’d then stormed away and things had been a little stilted between the three of them at dinner, but by the time they’d gone to bed, they’d all made up again.

They were right though. She didn’t know all that much about Danny. Today she’d see what she could get out of him.

~*~

Chad was on his lunch break and just polishing off the rest of his sandwich when Mary Anne appeared in front of him, smiling at him appealingly. Of all the things he was expecting her to say, "Will you come play out in the water with me?" was not one of them.

His forehead creased. "Uhh, well I just ate, so..."

“Oh.” She looked disappointed. "Well, okay. I guess I'll see you later, then."

He watched her walk off to the beach and growled a little when the boys who’d shown up a day after her friends had paused in the middle of their grab-assing to talk to her. He waited for her to put them off, but she seemed to be sweet and polite to them. Sweet and polite just encouraged them, didn’t she know that?

Jealous, Chad got up off the lounge chair and started toward the beach himself, giving the boys a warning glare. "Hey, Mary Anne!"

She turned to see him coming her way and her face lit up. He waved to her and she waved back then came running to meet him halfway.

"Did you change your mind?" she asked breathlessly, hopping a little.

He couldn’t help but smile at her eagerness. "Yeah, I decided a little stomach cramp isn't going to stop me from spending time with you."

She gave him a sparkly smile that momentarily stunned him as she grabbed his hand. "Come on then!"

They waded in a little and Mary Anne kicked some water at him, giggling. When he chuckled and kicked some back at her, she kicked even more and then took off running with a playful scream.

"Oh no you don't! C'mere!" Chad chased after her and caught up with her easily. He grabbed her by the waist and lifted her up.

“Eeeeeeeee!” She looped her legs around his waist. "What are you going to do with me?"

Smirking, he carried her out into the deeper water. "Oh, I dunno. I thought a dunking was in order."

The water was a little chilly and she started shaking. "I- I don't know about that..."

"Oh, I do." He braced his hands on her waist, ready to lift her off and drop her.

"Danny, no!!" she exclaimed, clinging to him tightly.

"C'mon, not afraid to get your hair wet, are you?" He took a look at her and saw her eyes were wide with fear. So she hadn’t been shaking because of the cold. "Hey, what's wrong?"

To his horror, she burst into tears. "Please don't let me go, the water's too deep and- and people get caught in tides th-that pull them out to sea a-a-and there's sharks and Danny please don‘t drop me!"

Chad gripped her tightly. "Hey, it's ok. We'll go back." He turned around and headed back to shore, rubbing her back. "I won't let go."

Mary Anne tried to calm down and he could feel her ragged breathing against his neck. "Okay... okay...."

Feeling like a shitheel, he rubbed his cheek against her temple. "I'm sorry." When all she did was whimper and tighten her hold on him, he sighed. "Ok, we're back where we were before. It's ok."

She gulped and looked around to reassure herself. "I'm sorry,” she said in an embarrassed little voice.

"Hey, it's ok, I get it."

Looking embarrassed, she wiped her face. "Thank you."

"No problem. Want me to set you down now?"

If it were possible, she looked even more embarrassed. "Right. I'm p-probably heavy and you're through hanging out with me."

Chad tilted his head back so he could see her better. "What gave you that idea?"

"I'm just a big baby, right?" she asked, not looking at him.

"No, you're not. Everyone's scared of the rip tide carrying them off."

"To the point they scream and pitch a fit?" she asked, dubiously.

"Well if someone was carrying them out there against their will, yeah, I'd still understand. I'm sorry."

Mary Anne still wasn’t looking at him and his heart sank a little. But then she glanced at him and she must’ve seen his sincerity because her eyes went wide with awe. She cupped his cheek in her little hand. "You're so much better than him..."

He smiled at her gently. “The ex?”

She nodded, still touching his face. "This would've made him mad." Deepening her voice and putting on a Southern accent she said, "Ya wanted me ta play out in the water like a damn fool 'n when I do, ya act like this? Jesus wept, Mary Anne. Ah cain't do anythang with you, can Ah??"

"Sounds like an inbred hick to me." Chad snorted.

Giggling, she pressed her forehead to his. "He was. And he was mean to me. He wasn't sweet like you are."

Who the hell did that guy think he was? "How could anyone ever be mean to you?"

"Well, Kristy says I was a doormat..." She pulled herself together, trying to look brave. “But I’m not going to be anymore.”

“Good.”

"So if I haven't chased you away... will you still play with me?"

"I'm still standing here, aren't I?" Chad pointed out, winking.

Mary Anne blushed at that reminder. "Oh, right. You can.... you can put me down. I know you do a lot of lifting while you're working so you don't need to haul me around on your break."

Chad set her down lightly. "It's not like you're heavy, but if you want to play, you have to be in the water."

"I know. I just don't want to go out too far." She took his hand trustingly.

"Then let's just walk parallel to the beach, okay?"

“Okay.” Mary Anne stepped close, looking a little shy. “Can I kiss you?”

Charmed, Chad smiled at her. "You don't have to ask."

Standing on her tiptoes, Mary Anne gave him a kiss that started soft and sweet but turned quickly passionate as he gathered her close.

“Wooooo!”

Mary Anne broke the kiss blushing but laughing. Chad glared over at the boys who had apparently been keeping an eye on them all this time. He smiled down at her. "I didn't know we were putting on a show."

"Neither did I... I kinda..." She looked down bashfully. "I kind of forgot anyone else was around."

"Yeah, me too,” Chad admitted. Her joyful look at his confession made him pull her even closer. "Would your friends be upset if I stole you away for dinner tonight?"

"Where are you going to take me?"

"The hotel restaurant, if you're ok with it."

"That sounds lovely."

"Good. Tonight at eight? I'll come up to get you."

"Okay, baby." She smiled sweetly.

He grinned back. “Okay, then.”

"Maybe you can come up early and... help me pick out a dress,” she said innocently.

"How early we talking here?"

"Early enough so... maybe I can try on a few for you."

How did my luck turn around this much??? “Sounds like a plan,” he said, calmly.

~*~

At eight thirty, Mary Anne and Danny were seated at the restaurant enjoying dinner. He’d seen three dresses and helped her out of her second one so exuberantly he’d ripped it, and now they shared secret, satisfied smiles across the table.

Remembering her earlier vow of getting to know him better, since the beach had been a bust, she asked, "So, Danny. What brought you to Mexico?"

"Oh, nice climate." He stuffed a metric truckload of food into his mouth so he had to chew for some time before he could speak again.

"It is. Maybe a little too warm for my taste. Which is funny since I'm going to school in southern California." She giggled a little. "Where are you from?"

“California,” he answered.

"Yeah? I'm going to school in Los Angeles. Are you from anywhere near there?"

“Mmm,” he said non-commitally.

Mary Anne waited for a little more but nothing was coming from him. "Um, I'm originally from the east coast. Connecticut. Have you been there before?"

"Nope, can't say I have. What's it like?"

"Well, we actually have seasons for one thing.” She laughed a little but it came out sounding half-hearted. Once again, here she was taking over the conversation. "The leaves turn all red and yellow in autumn, and it snows every winter, the spring is lovely, and the summer is very hot and humid."

Danny nodded along with her recitation. "Sounds great. You must miss it."

"Sometimes. But I got a good life going out in LA. I live with my sister and my kitten, I work at this daycare for this fabulous woman and these wonderful kids... and I like my classes. So. I guess I miss Connecticut because my father's out there."

"Sounds like you've got a lot going for you,” he said, sounding grumpy.

Mary Anne blushed, ashamed. Here she was bragging about her life when he worked as a handyman at a not-exactly-luxury resort. "I'm sorry, was that show offy? I didn't mean for it to be."

"No, not at all,” he said with a smile, further confusing her.

“Okay.” She cleared her throat and took a sip of her drink. "How long have you been working here?"

"Mmm, about a year."

"Do you like it?"

"It's got it's ups and downs."

"You get to meet lots of women. That's a plus."

Danny laughed a little. "Well, I guess that's true. Except a lot are 50 something divorcees, who wear blue eyeshadow and leopard print swimsuits, looking for a good time." He shuddered.

Mary Anne pressed a hand to her mouth to try to suppress her giggles. "Have any of them propositioned you?!"

"Like you wouldn't believe."

She had a giggle fit that actually made her tear up a little and instead of thinking she was a big dork, Danny just smiled at her the whole time.

"Well, maybe after I leave, a whole group of... cheerleaders or something will stay here. Then you'll be swimming in offers that won't make you shudder." Maybe it was best to start reminding him she wasn’t going to be staying long.

Or maybe not. Smiling sadly, he looked down at his food and didn’t answer.

"So! Um. What do you usually do for fun around here?" She guiltily changed the subject, wincing internally at her attempt to play it too cool about their “relationship.”

"Hmmm, well... it's just kind of laid back around here. I tend to do the same stuff the guests do, since I can get into the gym, the game room, all that."

"Oh, so you don't go hang out with the locals?" she asked, tilting her head to the side.

Danny laughed. "No, I can barely speak Spanish. I think I'd offend them by trying to ask what time it is."

"Que hora es?"

"Que hora es,” Danny repeated. “Thanks, I'll remember that the next time my watch battery dies."

"Why did you move to Mexico if you don't know the language, silly?" She smiled gently.

"Just... wanted a change of scenery." Danny frowned and looked away.

"You're divorced, aren't you?"

"What makes you say that?" he asked sharply. Meaning yes.

"I don't know, just this feeling I got just now. You're old enough to have been married already and usually love gone wrong prompts a need for a change of scenery..." Blushing, she looked down at her food. "Maybe I watch too many movies."

"So did you want dessert? They have great chocolate cake."

“I’m sorry, Danny,” Mary Anne said quietly. Oh no, don’t cry, don’t cry…

"It's... forget about it. It's in the past."

"If... if you ever change your mind, you can talk to me." He still didn’t say anything so she smiled sadly. "Chocolate cake sounds great."

"Ok. They bring a huge slice. Wanna share it?"

"Mmmm. Sure." She sat up eagerly, hoping her silliness would cheer him up. She was gratified by his laughter.

"Alright." He signaled the waiter. "Can we get a slice of chocolate cake for dessert?" he asked, and the waiter trotted off after taking their plates.

"So what are your plans for tomorrow?"

"Work til five."

Duh, Mary Anne. "When do you get days off?"

"Sundays."

"I leave on a Monday. Maybe we can spend Sunday together." She shrugged. "Unless you attend church or something..."

For some reason, that made him chuckle. "Nope, just sleep in."

"Well then, maybe we could do something. There's some pretty local spots we could go to... I've already checked some of them out with my friends."

"Sure."

She smiled at him and her face lit up even more when the waiter approached with their cake. "Oooooh, gracias!"

Danny grinned at her. "Looks good, huh?"

“Uh huh!” she agreed, picking up a fork.

They ate in relative silence after that, appreciating the chocolatey goodness of the cake and before they knew it, it was all gone.

Mary Anne sat back in her chair with a little groan. "Oooooof. I'm soooo full."

“Uh huh.”

"I hope I'll be able to walk,” she said, laughing.

"If not, I'll carry you."

"My Knight in Shining Armor." She gave him a bright-eyed smile and then started to look apprehensive. "I feel like I've been talking all night. I'm not usually this talkative."

"Nah, that's alright. I like listening to you."

"But I haven't been able to find anything out about you. That's what this was supposed to be, right? Get to know each other a little more?"

"Yeah, but I'm a simple guy. My life's not that interesting."

"I don't believe that." Mary Anne shook her head, hoping he’d believe her and tell her something.

Instead, "Ready to get out of here?"

She tried not to let too much of her disappointment show. "Sure. Are... are we going back to your place?"

"If you want."

"I do." Though as she said it, she started to re-think it. Maybe he wasn’t telling her anything because he didn’t want her to know anything. She was just someone warm to hug and kiss when he wanted it. The thought stung and that idea didn’t gel with the man who had so sweetly handled her deep water fear that afternoon.

Well, he could still be kind and want sex. The two didn’t have to be mutually exclusive. And he was a man with needs, since according to him, the only women who came on to him weren’t exactly his type.

He got done asking for the bill and looked her over. "You want to go for a walk on the beach first?"

"Okay, that sounds nice."

~*~

Mary Anne held his hand as they walked along, quietly. He’d been planning to say something to her once they were outside but now he knew he couldn’t. Even if he told her one small thing, he’d spill the whole truth to her and then she wouldn’t want to be holding his hand anymore.

“I’m sorry if I was nosy in there,” she said quietly.

He squeezed her hand. "You weren't. I just don't like talking about myself."

“Okay.” She stared out at the water and didn’t say anything further.

"Sorry if that's-- if it makes you uncomfortable."

"No, I mean... I get it. It's not a problem."

“Okay.” He walked along in silence, feeling like a bastard for hurting her feelings.

"I'm not going to be here that long anyway,” she said, attempting a casual shrug.

"Oh, right." He was already dreading her leaving.

"So, I guess I'm not going to need your life story anyway."

Clearing his throat he said, “Guess not.”

After a few more moments, she stopped and he looked at her questioningly. "Maybe we should just go back to your room now."

She didn’t look too excited at the prospect and he frowned.

"It's up to you."

Wordlessly, she led him back to the resort.

~*~

That… had been weird. Mary Anne had been as responsive as she always was but something hadn’t felt right. She hadn’t called him baby.

And she was slipping out of bed before either of them even had their breath back. "I should probably go back to my room. Night, Danny."

He sat up to watch her. "What's wrong?"

“Nothing.”

“Right,” he said, not believing her.

"I... think I went into this with the wrong idea, but I get it now." She continued dressing, not looking at him. "I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"

"What idea did you have?"

"It doesn't matter. I get that this is just sex, now, okay? And I'm fine with it." Struggling with the zipper of her dress kept her from looking at him but he could see her face was pink.

"How far did you think this would go? You're on vacation. You'll leave me soon." Against his will, the last sentence came out a little accusatory.

"Yeah but... I didn't think this would be so impersonal. But now that I know that's what you want, I can do that."

"That's not what I want."

She gave up on her zipper and gave him a confused look.

"I wanted to have a good time with you. And, I guess because I don't like to talk about myself, you thought all I wanted was, you know, sex. But it's not."

“It’s not.” Mary Anne got back on the bed, searching his face. "Okay, so have a good time with me. Can I at least know your last name?"

Great, another lie. “Mitchell.”

"Danny Mitchell from somewhere in California who came to Mexico for a change of scenery." She lay down, resting her head on his chest and he let out a breath of relief. "That's all I'm gonna get, huh."

She sounded so sad that he offered up, “I like to golf.”

Giggling, she poked his side. "Mini or the big ol' golfcourse you need a little car to get around on?"

"Big ol' one."

"And do you wear bad golf clothes? Like those saggy plaid pants old men like?"

He laughed along with her. "Nah, not yet."

"No. You're too young, aren't you, baby?" Her giggles tapered off and she sighed softly, nestling closer to him.

"Yeahhh, give it twenty years and I'll have the funny hat with the poof ball."

"Mmm. Wish I could see that."

"Oh, I dunno. I'd be pretty embarrassed for you to see me that way." Though somehow he didn’t think he’d mind, just so long as she was there.

"I think you'd look adorable." He could hear the smile in her voice and he squeezed her tight to his side.

"Bet you'd be the only one to think so."

"Did you want me to stay the night?"

“Mmm hmm.”

Mary Anne sat up and pulled her dress up over her head. "Maybe I should've booked the handyman's room instead of mine."

“Could’ve saved you some money,” Chad agreed, helping her out of her underwear and then holding the covers open for her to slip under. Once she was beside him, she pressed warm kisses to his face and down his neck.

“Maybe we should try that again,” she requested, softly. “Impersonal sex wasn’t very fun.” When she saw the look on his face she quickly added, “I mean, physically it was nice but…”

“I know what you mean. Something was missing.” He caressed the sides of her breasts and smiled when she made a soft cooing sound. “Like that.”

Mary Anne smiled at him dreamily. “You’re always so gentle.”

Swallowing, he got the condom on and nestled between her thighs, watching her face carefully. “Are you ready, sweetheart?” At her nod, he slid in slowly and smiled when her eyes fluttered shut.

“Baby,” she whispered, opening her eyes. He slid out and pushed back in carefully. “My baby.”

His eyes rolled back in his head. “Your baby,” he growled. She mewled and he nuzzled her neck. “Love being your baby.”

“Yeah?” she panted, lifting her hips to meet him.

“Yes.” His pace quickened. So lost in her, staring into her big expressive eyes, he started babbling. “Wish I could be… forever…”

She whimpered, clutching at his biceps. “Danny…”

“Always… your baby… nothing… sweeter…”

“Danny!”

“Sweet Mary Anne…”

“Unh!” she came so hard she shook all over. Her inner muscles squeezed at him and it didn’t take long before he followed her. Sagging beside her, he absently pulled off the condom and tossed it aside, deciding to worry about it later. For now, he just wanted her close.

As he fell asleep, he thought he could hear her whisper, “You can be my baby for always if you want…”
