The Collaboration

Mary Anne spent Wednesday night dreading seeing Chad again. If she saw him, she knew she was going to have to ask him if she was just a little sex toy or if she meant anything to him at all. As much as she loved their time in his office after school, she didn't want to be the only one caring.

So Thursday morning, when Mr. Callis begged for volunteers to put up posters advertising the pog tournament he was judging, she volunteered and was the only one to do so. After class, she told him about her detention and Mr. Callis told her not to worry about it; he'd handle it.

But would Chad - Mr. Shelten, she had to start calling him that again - go for it? She felt nervous all day until lunchtime when Mr. Callis walked by her and gave her a giddy thumbs up. That was that, then. She could put off seeing Chad alone for at least one day.

She still had to get through health class, though. Thank god he'd seated her towards the back. Mary Anne took notes dutifully and stared out the window, zoning out Mr. Shelten's lecture on the digestive system. She was sure to keep her eyes on her notebook to avoid uncomfortable eye contact, but every time she ducked her head to write down one of his bulleted points, she could feel his gaze burning into her like twin lasers.

Finally, just when she felt she couldn't take any more, the bell rang and everyone leapt up, slamming their notebooks shut and chattering.

"Miss Spier," Mr. Shelten called over the din. "Could I have word with you, please?"

"Rut roh, someone's in trouble with the teacher!"

"Stop being a smartass, Robbie and get to your next class," Mr. Shelten said, irritably.

Robbie grinned as the students tittered and everyone filed out of the class until the only ones left were Mary Anne and Mr. Shelten, who dropped down into his desk chair looking tired.

"Yes, Mr. Shelten?" Mary Anne asked, nervously fiddling with her backpack strap.

Ch- Mr. Shelten rubbed his forehead as he looked at the pile of homework on his desk. "Mr. Callis told me you volunteered to hang up posters for him, and wanted it to serve as your detention with me."

"And he told me that you agreed to it." When he didn't say anything, Mary Anne took that as her cue to leave. "Have a nice day, sir."

"Hold up." She stopped but didn't turn back, unable to face him. "How many days were you going to hang up posters?"

"Just today." She touched the doorframe lightly, wishing they could get this over with and she could escape.

"Ok, so tomorrow, you'll be back in my office to serve your detention with me."

Her heart pounded just thinking about it. But no, she couldn't do this anymore. Not feeling for him the way she was and only being a... "Unless I find something else, yes."

"And... will you be finding other teachers to volunteer for, Miss Spier?" he asked, quietly.

"I guess so. It's probably for the best." Mary Anne already started wracking her brain for other teachers she could go to. Dawn's environmental science teacher was always looking for volunteers to pick up all the litter on campus; maybe she could do that and have Dawn come along as a kind of sisterly activity.

There was a long pause as Mr. Shelten let this sink in. "So I guess you're tired of this old man after all."

She turned around to face him, surprised by the conclusion he'd drawn. He looked so sad that it broke her heart. "No, that's... that's not what this is about. That's the problem." Her voice cracked and she knew it was only a matter of time until the dam broke and her tears started to fall.

Mr. Shelten sat up straight in his chair. "Can you close the door, Mary Anne? So we can talk about this?"

Here it comes. Nodding miserably, she closed the door and turned to face him, hugging herself as she started to cry in front of him.

"What's the problem?" he asked, gently.

"I'm scared. I don't know what this is, is it... just a school thing? Is it over when I've served my month of detention, what?" She let her hair fall into her face, embarrassed by what a fool she was making of herself.

"I-I dunno what this is. I'm enjoying it, but I keep wondering why it's me you chose, and if you'll forget all about this, and me, after this month is up."

Mary Anne looked up at him in amazement. "How can you think that? I... I asked you to stay with me when my dad leaves for the weekend. I did that because I wanted my pillow to smell like you. And it's selfish and wrong because I could get you in so much trouble. And I asked you without even knowing if you're married." Sick horror curled up in her insides and she knew it communicated itself to him because he frowned.

"Do you see a ring on my finger?" He wiggled his bare hand at her. "And I'm glad you know the trouble I could get in. I could lose my job, go to jail... It doesn't mean I don't care about you, because I do, but... we just have to be careful."

Relief brought a soft smile to her face. "You care about me?"

"Yes," Chad said with no hesitation.

She could feel herself start to sway toward him, wanting nothing more than to curl up in his lap and tell him she felt the same way. But she stopped herself. "I... don't want to get you into trouble. I was so stupid to start this and I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

"Don't be sorry. I-I" He stopped whatever he was going to say. "Look, if we wait... until after graduation, maybe we could still... do this. Be together. But I'm getting worried about someone finding out."

Mary Anne wiped at her tears. "I've been planning on going back to the east coast after graduation."

"Oh. I... didn't know." The bleak expression on his face reflected her own feelings at this point. She took a shaky breath.

"I'll stay for you if you ask me to."

"Mary Anne..." He stared at her in awe. "I can't ask you to change your future for me."

"Even if I want you to be in it?" Mary Anne sniffled. If he asked, it showed that he wanted her, that he wasn't going to let her go.

Chad sighed. "Ok, let's look at it this way; why were you planning on going back east?"

"Because it's what I know," she said honestly. "It's comfortable."

He nodded. "But you'd be willing to give all that up?"

"Yes." She took a few steps closer to him, comforted by his proximity.

"To be with me?"

"Yes." Now she was standing directly in front of him.

He reached out to her. "Mary Anne?"

"What?" She took his hand.

"Stay."

Smiling, she nodded and her tears abated. "Okay."

He smiled back at her. "You think we can wait for each other? Until this school year's over?"

"I don't know," she said, her smile falling. She didn't think she could pass him in the halls without picturing him with his arms around her, kissing her softly and whispering in her ear, without wanting just that instantly.

Chad squeezed her hand. "I know, it'll be a challenge... seeing you everyday and not being able to touch you... but I think we can do this."

Mary Anne was quiet a moment, thinking. "Maybe I should transfer schools. I could tell my dad that I'm not being challenged academically. Or I can tell him about Jordan; that should get me yanked from this place."

"That's very cunning of you," Chad said, smiling in admiration. "But what about your friends?"

"It'll be better than having to see you everyday."

"Oh gee, thanks." He grinned to show her he was kidding. "It's a good plan."

"It hurts, though." Damn it, she was tearing up again.

"Yeah, I know what you mean." The bell rang and they both shared a look of distress, Chad letting out a breath. "I'd better write you a late pass."

"Okay," she squeaked, hugging herself again. She watched him scribble his signature on the pad and rip a slip off, handing it to her. When she accepted it, he stood up and kissed the top of her head.

"Is that all I get?" she asked, looking hurt.

"Well, if it's not good enough..." he said, trying to look put out. But then he grinned and went to lock the door. Before she knew it she was in his arms and he was dipping her low, kissing her hard.

She clutched at his shoulders even when he lifted her upright once more. She knew she wasn't going to be able to let this be the last moment they ever had together. "Please stay with me when my dad goes away? So I can say goodbye?"

He hesitated a moment. "When's he leaving again?"

"Next Friday night," she said, looking hopeful.

"Can you transfer by then... just in case someone sees me at your place?"

"Yes." She nodded eagerly.

Chad smiled. "Ok, I'll come over."

For a second, she didn't think she'd heard him correctly but then she was leaping up into his arms, hugging him tightly. "Oh, I adore you! We have a big screen tv if that sweetens the pot."

"Doesn't hurt," he said, chuckling as his arms closed around her.

She buried her face in his neck, breathing in the smell of his aftershave and savoring the feeling of his hands smoothing up and down her back. But this was a stolen moment and she took a step back from him. "I'm so late for my next class. I'd better go." She wiped her face. "I'm going to have to hit a bathroom first; I must look like a wreck."

"Nah, not too bad. Just a little red and puffy." He cupped her face in his hands and kissed her forehead. The sweetness of the gesture went straight to her heart.

"I'll miss you," she whispered.

"Yeah, but we can talk on the phone maybe, or email? We can last," he said, sounding confident.

"It won't be the same as going to your office everyday. I've gotten used to... stuff." She started to blush. Stuff. Good grief.

He laughed. "Yeah, stuff is nice." But then his smile faded. "You'd better go."

"Okay." She made it a few steps before stopping with a gasp. "You don't have my address!"

Chad rolled his eyes. "Yeah, that would help. Can't believe I forgot to ask."

"It's okay; I forgot too." Mary Anne ripped a page out of her notebook and quickly scribbled onto the paper before handing it to him. "Okay. Here it is. He has to catch his flight at 5:00 but he's leaving around 2:30 because of traffic and airport security."

"Ok. Thanks." He carefully pocketed the information.

"I also wrote down my cellphone number and my email address." She bit her lip and started to edge backwards. "I'd better go now. Bye."

"Bye, Mary Anne. See you next weekend."

She smiled at him, pausing at the door. "See ya."

Once she was out of the room, Chad stood staring at where she'd been a moment ago and mumbled to himself, "Bye."

~*~

Chad scanned the last few lines again, his grin getting wider and wider. This was so awesome. He'd originally started writing this, planning his own porn epic that he could transfer to his work computer for when he got to missing Mary Anne during the day. But to have his wife find it and instead of getting mad... actually adding to it?

He checked the time and saw that Alma was still at Tae Kwan Do and Daisy was still at her violin lesson. He ran upstairs to their bedroom where Mary Anne was putting away the clothes she'd just bought on a shopping trip with Dawn.

She jumped nearly a foot into the air when he burst into the room. "Chad, what-"

"You read my story," he said.

Guilt turned her face red. "I'm sorry," she said. "It's just that... you left it on such a down note that I-"

"Wanna collaborate?"

She looked surprised but then gave him a promising smile. "Of course."

~*~

Mary Anne watched through the front window, bouncing excitedly. She'd been stationed there for twenty minutes and finally, Chad's truck had turned the corner onto her street and was pulling in the driveway. She barely waited for him to knock before she threw the door open and leapt up into his arms, causing him to drop his overnight bag on the entryway floor.

"Dad just left, we have a lot of good food in the kitchen, and there's the tv in there and ooooh we have a hot tub that we can play in later if you want and then there's my room which I really want to show you and I got this really cute dress I think you'd like since you've never seen me out of my uniform so what do you want to do first?"

Chad blinked. "Hi."

"Hi." She gave him a soft kiss. "I'm a little excited."

"I got that." Gently, he set her on her feet. "So... how's the new school?"

That was the last thing Mary Anne wanted to think about. "It's okay. The PE teacher isn't as good as you."

He grinned a little arrogantly. "Well, who is really?"

"No one."

His eyes flashed and he scooped her up into his arms. Yeah, they were done with small talk. "Which way to your bedroom?"

"Upstairs, second door on the right." She wove her arms around his neck and did her best not to squeal in excitement.

Chad carried her up the stairs and the motion prompted her to say, "Oh! This reminds me; thank you for carrying me to the nurse. Even though she yelled at you for it."

"You're welcome." He rolled his eyes. "She's such a sour old lady."

"Aww, she was sweet to me."

"She's never sweet to me."

"I'll be sweet to you."

"I know you will."

They made it to her room and Chad set her on the bed, taking a look around. She wasn't a messy person but she'd spent a little time tidying things up, making sure she hadn't left clothes scattered around or one of her bras hanging out of the dresser drawer. She'd vacuumed and dusted and had even hidden her stuffed animals in the closet so he wouldn't think she was a child. She noticed he took a moment to look at her Wicked poster and she wondered if maybe she should've taken that down.

"Here's my room! I think you'll be happy to see it's not a pink little girl's room." No, the room was decorated in yellow and white. She'd liked it at the time but maybe he thought it was lame?

"It's nice." He stayed standing and Mary Anne curled her legs up under her, watching him.

"Hi," she said softly, suddenly shy.

"Hey, there." He sat down beside her, watching her warmly.

She blushed. "You're in my room. I've never had a boy in my room before. And I guess I still haven't because you're not a boy."

"Nope, I'm sure not." He chuckled.

"I don't know why I'm so nervous suddenly..." she said, playing with a strand of her hair.

"You're nervous?" he asked, looking concerned.

"A little bit. This feels different."

"Because we're not in school?"

She nodded, glad that he understood.

"Good different?"

"Yeah," she said quietly. "I've dreamed about this all week and I'm wondering how it's going to go..."

He leaned over her, eyes glittering. "So how'd you dream it'd go?"

"Something like...." When his mouth met hers, Mary Anne's eyes slowly fluttered shut and she sank backwards. He was only happy to follow her, kissing her slowly and deeply.

"How's this living up to your dream so far, sweetheart?" he breathed in her ear once she'd broken the kiss. He nuzzled her temple, breathing in the smell of her shampoo.

She panted and eased up onto her elbows. "It's better than my dream."

"What happens next?" he asked, taking his cue from her and raising up a little.

"You get me out of my dress," she purred.

His eyes flashed. "Sounds like a plan." He sat up and smiled at her. "Turn around, sweetheart."

Obediently, she turned around and he drew the zipper of her dress down slowly, letting out a sharp gasp when he encountered her smooth, bare back. "No bra? Why, Miss Spier, that's just-"

"Practical?" she interrupted, getting off the bed to discard her dress. Her bra wasn't the only bit of underwear missing and Chad had to remind himself to breathe as he stared at her.

His frank appraisal of her made her self conscious and she shyly crossed her arms over her chest. "Um, this is the f-first time you've seen me..."

"Uh huh," he whispered. Reaching out he gently pried her arms away from her chest. "Come here, sweetheart." When she was in his lap, he stroked her hair and searched her eyes. "Are you sure you really want to do this?"

Her uncertainty faded under his gentle ministrations. "Yes, I'm sure. I just... got nervous. I know you won't hurt me." She kissed his cheek. "You're always so gentle with me."

"Could never hurt you," he rumbled, kissing her again. He slowly eased her back down onto the bed. "Is it about that time in your dream that I show you mine?"

Biting her lip, she nodded.

Chad got onto his knees and slipped his t-shirt up and off, pausing to let her look at his chest. He grinned proudly as her mouth fell open and one curious little hand reached out to him.

"You're so furry," she said, ruffling his chest hair.

"Am I not furry in your dreams?" Chad asked.

"Oh no, you're furry." She smiled up at him dreamily. "It's just nice when your dreams come true, you know?"

He gave her a significant look. "I know, sweetheart." Smiling gently when she blushed, he undid his belt and dropped it to the floor. He reluctantly got up off the bed to ease his jeans and boxers down.

Mary Anne's eyes dilated, taking in the sight of him before her. "How do you fit?" she asked, mostly to herself.

~*~

"I would never say that, Chad!"

"You would too! And you have!"

"When?!"

"The third time we were together. We'd just had a shower and an argument? The makeup sex?"

"That was so long ago; I don't remember saying that!"

"Well you did."

"Yeah? What did I say?"

"'How do you fit me so well?'"

"That's totally different from what you have schoolgirl me saying!"

"Oh, big deal, one word's off! Who cares?"

. . .

"Do you want me to change it?"

"No, let's just keep going."

~*~

Chad arranged himself on top of her, dropping a kiss onto her lips when she hummed softly in approval. "Do you have any protection, sweetheart?"

She nodded. "In the nightstand."

Reaching over, he pulled open the drawer and chuckled at the sight of about thirty condoms. "Did you want to do anything else this weekend?"

"Well... I might have gotten a little excited and bought too many," Mary Anne admitted, blushing.

"It's fine," he reassured her. Ripping open the packet, he slid the condom on and let the wrapper fall from his fingers when Mary Anne shifted under him, opening her thighs wide. She looked so sweet it actually made his heart ache a little and he cupped her face. "We've hardly done anything. Are you really ready?"

"Yes." She nodded again, reaching for his erection and bringing him to her entrance. "See?" Brushing his head against her opening, he felt her wet heat through the snug latex and his eyes rolled back at the sensation.

"Oh, sweetheart, you're going to kill me," he said, gutturally as he slid inch by inch inside her.

"Nooo," she cooed, sliding her hands up his back, smiling at the feel of him stretching her. It had been just over a week since she'd felt this and it was so wonderful to have him back. "I've missed you soooo much, baby."

He grunted, unable to speak. He was going into sensory overload, the feel and sight of her, the smell, how she sounded coupled with what she was saying... he wasn't going to be able to keep control.

"Did you miss me?" she whispered in his ear, then took the lobe between her lips and sucked softly.

"Unngh," he groaned, squeezing his eyes shut tight. Don't come don't come don't come.

She slid her legs up around his ribs. "Did you, baby?" she whispered, feverishly, rotating her hips. "Did you miss me?"

"Yes," he grunted out with difficulty. "Missed you so fucking much." Unable to hold back, he pulled out almost all the way and then slammed back inside her roughly.

Gasping, she followed his lead, meeting each of his quick thrusts. She scratched her nails down his back but he was so lost in her, he didn't feel it.

"Think of you.... every... day," he struggled to get out. What he was hearing hardly sounded like his voice; it was like his lust had taken over and was speaking for him. "Miss you. Miss my.... sweet... girl!"

The naked need in his voice made Mary Anne whimper. She left kisses along his jaw line until she got to his mouth. "Miss my baby," she said against his lips and sighed, shakily.

"Gonna..." he tried to warn her.

"Me too," she agreed, letting her ankles unclasp so her feet could rest on the bed. She put more into it, wanting to come and met him thrust for thrust, tipping her hips just so to make his pubic hair brush her sensitive clit.

It soon grew to be too much and Chad lost all sense of rhythm and finesse as he just pumped into her, chanting her name. He was so relieved when she came, screaming his name that his eyes rolled back in his head and he came, hard.

Exhausted, he sank down beside her and fumbled with the condom until he had it off. He didn't argue when she took it from him and disposed of it in the wastebasket on her side of the bed.

"Okay, baby?"

"Unh." Chad couldn't keep his eyes open.

She giggled softly and pressed a kiss to his forehead. "Go ahead and sleep. I have some homework I need to finish. By the time you wake up, I should be all yours."

"Mine," he mumbled.

"Yes," she agreed, stroking his hair.

Chad Shelten fell asleep with a smile on his face for the first time in years.

~*~

By the end of the weekend, they'd used nearly half of the condoms in Mary Anne's drawer. Chad had thought there'd be no way he could live up to her expectations but he was finding that he'd been very, very wrong.

When he thought he wouldn't be able to perform any more that day, Mary Anne would suggest going out to the hot tub and seeing her in a tiny, shameless bikini would have his tired body coming to attention all over again. The girl was starting to know just what buttons to push to get the desired response from him. She was best at pushing him away just at the height of his excitement, making him have to work for what he wanted. It wasn't much, just maybe a change of venue, her leading the way and beckoning to him.

Their last day, Sunday, found them waking up slowly, unable to let go of one another. Usually Mary Anne would disentangle herself from the sprawl they usually slept it and go get breakfast ready but this day, she stayed right where she was, holding tight to him as he stroked her hair. It had only been a few days but already, Mary Anne's bed was feeling like home. He didn't know how he was going to be able to sleep in his own without nearly going sick, missing her.

Finally, they both got up and took one last shower together, making gentle love up against the wall. There was no teasing or towel snapping as they dried off, just a somber silence and a heartbreaking tension that she'd try to ease by giving him a nuzzling kiss every once in awhile.

Her father's flight was coming in at two o'clock. After a quiet lunch of turkey sandwiches, Chad gently lifted her out of his lap.

"I'd better go pack."

"Okay." She followed him up to her room and while he wasn't looking, slipped a few things of hers into his bag. Her senior picture he'd seen on her dad's desk and had drooled over, one of her tank tops, and after blushing a moment, a pair of panties.

They had maybe a half hour to kill so they went down to the living room and settled on the couch to watch tv. But the remote stayed on the coffee table and they stared at each other.

"Thank you for a lovely weekend, Chad." Mary Anne smiled. "It was perfect."

"Well, I should thank you too." Chad smiled back, smoothing a hand over her knee.

"There's... something I wanted to..." She reached into her pocket and pulled out a gold locket. "Could you hold onto this for me? Until I can see you again. It was my mother's."

Chad looked down at it in her little hand. "Sure, but, why do you want me to?"

"Because... this is my promise to you. That I'll wait for you." Mary Anne bit her lip, watching him with shining eyes.

He smiled and accepted it. "Ok. I, uh... I'm not sure if I have anything to give you in return..." He went through his own pockets but came up empty. Then an idea struck him. "Wait, I know." He slipped his class ring off of his finger and handed it to her.

Tearing up, Mary Anne accepted it and placed it on the thumb of her right hand, though it was still a little too big. "Thank you." She looked at him plaintively. "If I tell you something, will you freak out? Because I really, really need to say it."

Chad's eyes widened. "I'm not sure. I could..."

Mary Anne's tears spilled. "I love you."

"Mary Anne." Chad swallowed hard. "It's-- are you-- do you really? We haven't been together that long."

"I'm sure. I've never felt this way about anyone before, but I know." She wiped her face, trying to keep her composure.

Humbled, Chad kissed her forehead and pulled her into his lap, wrapping her up tight to rock her back and forth as she cried. "This is hard... being apart."

"I know," she said, clinging to him. "It feels like I'm going to die."

"Shhh, don't say that."

"I'm sorry. It's just that June is so far away."

"I know."

"I miss you already. My first day at my new school, I spent lunch crying in the bathroom." She laughed, embarrassed. "I probably shouldn't have told you that; it's not too sexy, is it?"

"Not really." He brushed the hair back from her face and gently traced the track of another tear sliding down her cheek. But I don't want you to think you have to be sexy all the time."

"Good. I think I used most of my sexy up when I first came on to you."

He laughed at that and then grew serious. "I'd better go. Your dad's flight will be in soon."

Alarmed, Mary Anne looked at the clock and then back at him. "Are you sorry I told you I loved you?"

Chad shook his head. "Not at all."

"Good." She hugged him tightly. "I'll see you in June. If... if you want to go to my graduation, I'll get you a ticket."

"Sure."

"Okay." Mary Anne climbed out of his lap and took his hand. "I'll walk you to the door."

They both walked slowly but eventually they did reach the door and she gave him a watery smile. "Goodbye."

"It's not goodbye forever." He knocked her chin affectionately with his knuckle. "I'll see you."

"Okay." She smiled and the sight of it warmed him. How was he going to make it through the rest of the year without seeing it? "Goodbye for awhile, then."

"See you." He pulled her close and kissed her, putting everything he had into it. He didn't want to stop but knew he had to, even though she still gripped his biceps and whimpered softly when he did.

Heading down the driveway to his truck, she called after him, "I love you!"

Not one to miss an opportunity, he spun to face her, walking backwards and in his best Han Solo impression said, "I know." He smiled as she got the reference and grinned at him.

Mary Anne watched him go with a tight feeling in her chest. Just six months, she told herself. Her cat, Tigger, streaked across the yard towards her and she scooped him up in her arms and had him wave goodbye to Chad, too.

Smiling at the cute display, Chad backed down the driveway and waved one last time at her before driving away. His smile faded when he turned out of her neighborhood and couldn't see her in his rear view mirror anymore.

~*~

"Awww, baby, that was sad." Mary Anne wiped her eyes.

Chad was about to respond but the front door slamming and two voices saying "We're home!" in harmony stopped him momentarily.

"I better go tell them we're going out to eat tonight," Mary Anne said, getting up. She blew her nose quickly and was almost out the door when Chad caught her arm.

"We'll finish it later, sweetheart. It won't have a sad ending."

She smiled into his eyes. "I know."
