Title: Interlude 1

Disclaimer: Chad and Mary Anne belong to ABC, Ann M. Martin, and Scholastic Books repsectively. We humbly apologize for this.
Summary: Mary Anne has left Stoneybrook behind to attend UCLA. She loves living with Dawn and Tigger, working at a local day care, and spending time with Logan. But lately Logan's been changing and not for the better. What will happen when Logan's erratic behavior gets to be too much and the older LAPD officer starts getting closer?!
Notes: Sorry for the dreadful summary; I was going for a style. This is a Day Break/Baby-Sitter's Club crossover fic we dreamed up one night because we're insane. If you're brave enough to give this a try, good on you. And if you avoid it, well, we understand. :)

This next bit is called an "interlude" simply because it wasn't in the orignal outline. But we had fun writing it and wanted to put it someplace, so here it is. Not completely necessary to the overall story but it's something cute and fluffy.

Catch up on earlier chapters and gawk at Nutmeg's awesome artwork at the organizational post.

Interlude 1

Chad flipped through the file he was holding as he walked back to his office. Today couldn’t have been more boring and he was looking forward to getting off of work, maybe calling Mary Anne to find out how her schedule ended up so they could go out.

He was surprised to find someone already occupying his desk.

“I’m very important,” Mary Anne Spier said, affecting a deep voice that sounded silly on her. “I wear a suit and everything.” She scowled playfully, making him laugh as he shut the door behind him.

She smiled and reached behind her, to the football on the shelf behind his desk. “Did you play in high school?”

“I did,” Chad said, watching her toss the ball from hand to hand.

“Were you the quarterback? Or the nickleback?” She started to laugh, shaking her head. “I can never follow football.”

“Uh, I think a nickleback is a Canadian coin. I was a tight end for the first year then I changed to wide receiver.” He watched, puzzled, as she had a gigglefit. “What?”

“Nothing.” She set the football back in its place and asked lightly, “Are you busy?”

He shrugged, playing it casual. “I pretty much call the shots in this department so I can take off whenever.”

“Because I was thinking we could go for a walk…” She trailed off and gave him a self deprecating smile. “Actually, I just wanted an excuse to get you alone. Does that door lock?”

Chad looked behind him, a slow grin spreading across his face. Well, this day was getting more and more exciting by the minute. “Sure does. You want to lock me in, huh?”

“Well, you said you were hoping I’d jump you again and this is a pretty private location.” She started blushing and he could see she was losing her nerve. “Or if… um, you really need to work, I can just-”

“I told you I can take off whenever,” he said, smoothly halting any chance of her bailing out. “Do you want me to lock the door and close the blinds so you can have your opportunity?”

Her mouth opened and shut a few times before she could squeak out, “Yes, please.”

Chad grinned sexily. “Okay then.” He sauntered over to the door and locked it, closed the blinds, then returned to where he’d been standing. “I don’t have any handcuffs in here, but I could go get a pair if you want.” He winked at her.

She stared at him, stunned. “I… I don’t think you understood what I meant…”

He chuckled. “No? What does ‘jumping me’ mean, then? You’re not going to play leapfrog with me, are you?”

She giggled. “No, of course not. I didn’t come here so we could h-have sex. I mean, sex with you would be wonderful, but not at this time, I just wanted to…” She licked her lips and stared at him helplessly as if to say Please read my mind.

Chad couldn’t help but grin like a fool. “Wonderful? Well, you got that right.” He grew serious. “Tell me what you want, Mary Anne.”

“I’ve been wanting to kiss you all day,” she whispered, eyes wide.

“Well, you don’t have to wait for an invitation,” he said, gently.

Mary Anne’s smile was big. “It’s just polite to ask.” She rose from the chair and slowly approached him, watching him carefully. Right, because he was going to run out of here when he could get some Mary Anne-kissing.

He waited all casually, bouncing on the balls of his feet, managing to keep his excitement from really showing.

As if something inside her had snapped, Mary Anne leaped into his arms and pressed her mouth to his in the hottest, wettest kiss he’d ever received in his life. He kissed her back as best he could while getting them to his desk chair, dropping into it with her in his lap. Once he was sitting, she arranged herself so that her legs were together, draped over the arm of his chair. Ever the lady, even when she was jumping grown men in their own offices…

“Is… this… okay?” she asked between mind-numbing kisses.

“Better… than… okay. Great.”

“Then why… aren’t you… touching me?”

“I didn’t…. wanna go… too far… and… upset you.”

She giggled into his mouth and then took hold of one of his hands he had resting on her waist and slowly dragged it up her body until it cupped one of her firm, little breasts. He gave it a gentle squeeze and was rewarded by a soft whimpering sound.

After several minutes, she ripped her head away, panting. “I’m going to pass out!” She laughed giddily and slumped forward so her forehead rested against his.

Really damned content, he gently rubbed her back. “That’s no good. Deep breaths, Spier. You pass out in here, IA will investigate me.”

“Can’t have that,” she agreed, nuzzling his cheek. “Don’t want you to lose your job over me.”

“Nah, I scare the people around here. They wouldn’t dare fire me.”

“I can’t imagine how that could be.” She gave him a sunny smile then dropped a light kiss on the tip of his nose. “Can you go to the movies with me tonight?”

“Hmmm, lemee check my schedule.” His eyes drifted up as he pretended to think. “Yup, I’m free.”

Smiling, she flicked his shoulder. “You’re always checking your imaginary schedule.”

He gave her an offended look. “What- Imaginary? Hey, it’s real.” He tapped his forehead. “I just keep it all up here.”

Mary Anne kissed the spot he’d tapped. “Okay. I’m sorry.”

He grinned devilishly. Yes, she doesn’t realize I never have anything planned! “You’re forgiven, just don’t make assumptions like that again. You hurt my feelings.” He tried to act all hurt to back up his claim but she didn’t look too convinced.

All the same, she pouted at him in sympathy. “So, do you want to see an action or a comedy? I don’t do horror, I’m just telling you that right now.”

“Not even horror slash comedy?”

“What do you have in mind?” she asked, suspiciously.

“I have no clue what’s playing. We’ll have to look it up.”

“Okay.” She shifted a little. “Are you comfortable? I’ve been in your lap for awhile, now.”

“Yeah, I’m fine. It’s a pretty nice position to be in, really.” He grinned.

“Because maybe,” she said shyly, glancing at his desk, “I could lay down.”

Ohhh yeah, and he’d be able to control himself for all of two seconds. He raised an eyebrow. “Don’t give me ideas or we’ll miss the movie tonight.”

She tilted her head to the side in confusion. “Me laying down would give you ideas? And you above me with…” Realization crossed her face. “Oh. Right.”

He laughed. “You really are adorable, you know that?”

Mary Anne touched his face gently. “So are you,” she said, all seriousness.

He swallowed but said lightly, “No, I’m not. I’m tough and manly; haven’t you been paying attention?” He sneaked a soft kiss.

“You really don’t see it, do you?” She started kissing him again and it wasn’t the frenzied kissing of earlier, but something much more gentle.

“See… what?”

She pulled back and cupped his face. “You’re a sweet man, Chad Shelten. You may try to hide it, but it’s there. I wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t seen it myself.”

He stared into her bright, warm eyes and gave her a lopsided grin. “Wow. I don’t even know what to say to that. You’re so—You’re the sweet one to say that.” He kissed her forehead. “Thanks, sweetheart.”

She stroked his hair. “Just calling ‘em like I see ‘em.”

Chad felt proud of himself for not coming off as the jerk everyone else saw him as. “You’re pretty astute, then.”

She smiled at him and pulled his face back to hers and they returned to the sweet, soft kissing that nearly made his hands shake.

BAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAM “Shelten!”

Growling, he tore his mouth from Mary Anne’s to bark out, “What?!”

“We got a situation down at-” The doorknob jiggled. “Why the fuck is this door locked?”

Chad stood and set Mary Anne gently on the floor. “Sorry about him,” he mumbled. He adjusted his tie and went to unlock the door. Opening it a crack, he stuck his angry face out. “Because it’s my office and I can lock the door to get away from people pestering me! Now what the hell is so important you have to bother me?”

“Hey, do you have a girl in there?” the cop asked, trying to look through the meager space Chad had provided.

Angrily, Chad shoved the guy across the hall, not too hard, and stepped out after him, closing the door behind him. “What do you need?”

“Shit’s gone down in homicide and we need all hands on deck. God, it’s all gone to hell.” The cop looked over Chad’s shoulder, fruitlessly. “Is it the little brunette that was here for you last week?”

“Do you really want to be questioning me about that when, as you claim, it’s all going to hell down there?” He glared the cop then sighed. “Get back down there and I’ll be right there.” Chad watched the man scurry away then went back into his office. “Sorry, I dunno what’s going on or how long it’ll take to fix-”

Mary Anne wrapped herself around him and gave him a long, deep kiss. “I understand. Call me when things clear up?”

“Was planning on it.” He smiled. “Hopefully we can still catch that movie tonight.”

“Okay. I should…” She gestured to the door but didn’t move.

He frowned a little, not wanting to see her go. “Yeah, I guess so. C’mon, we’ll share an elevator down.”

“Okay.” She took his hand and they walked out to the elevator, where Chad pushed the button and they stood there a little awkwardly, unsure of how to act outside the private little heaven they’d created in his office.

“So… will you come by more often to jump me?” Chad winked playfully.

Mary Anne blushed but laughed. “Maybe?”

“Well, I wouldn’t mind being surprised from time to time.” The elevator opened and they got inside.

“And I wouldn’t mind surprising you.” She rubbed her thumb along his, resting her cheek against his arm.

He smiled, softly, watching the numbers getting closer to homicide, and sighed. “Well, I gotta go clean up someone else’s mess now. Typical.” He turned and kissed her gently. “I’ll call you as soon as I’m done, you know, unless it’s really late.”

“Okay. ‘Bye.” She let her hand slowly slide from his.

He tightened his hold on her hand and gently pulled her back. “Damn, you’re hard to let go of!” He kissed her one last time then released her hand with a smirk. “’Bye, sweetheart.”

“See ya.” When the doors opened, he stepped out and couldn’t resist taking a glance back at her. She was smiling and blew him a kiss as the doors shut.

So it was that homicide was greeted by Chad Shelten grinning like a fool for a few moments, before shaking off whatever good mood he was in to get right down to business.
