Title: Dinner Mayhem
Author: Toxic Corn and [livejournal.com profile] katsqueaks
Rating: G
Warning: Kidfic.
Summary: Another dinner with the Serenity crew. More self-indulgent silliness on our part.
Notes: Takes place in the Songs From a Firefly ‘verse. Kat and I wrote this back in like, July or so during an AIM conversation. I’m only now just posting it. My punctuality leaves much to be desired.

Dinner Mayhem

It had been a long, hard day and everyone was glad to sit down to dinner. The kids had returned from Haven just a week ago and both parents and kids were just getting used to having each other around again. It made for lots of over-protectiveness and frustration on both parties and now dinner was a little tense.

“I wonder how much she’s gonna spill now?” Jayne muttered to River, watching Nettie. Just yesterday she’d managed to spill protein down her front but in all fairness, Vee had knocked the back of her chair on accident at the time.

“Chances are she’ll wear more than what she gets in her mouth,” River said, giving their daughter a teasing smile.

Nettie frowned indignantly. “Hey, sitting right- oops.” Sure enough, her forkful of protein splatted onto her shirt.

Jamey took one look and started to laugh, spraying milk out his nose an impressive distance.

“Oooh, do it again!” Wash said, mentally measuring the spray.

“It went down nearly the whole table!” Ben looked both amused and envious.

Mal closed his eyes in frustration. “Why can’t we ever have a nice supper?!”

“Well, there was that time last Christmas,” Zoe said thoughtfully. “That was kind of nice.”

Jayne looked at her like she was insane. “The kids nearly set the mess on fire tryin’ ta make cookies.”

“Hence why she said ‘kind of,’” Simon pointed out.

“There wouldn’t’ve been a fire if it hadn’t been for Nova,” Vee put in helpfully.

Nova frowned. “But I was the one who said 350 degrees was enough and you said that it would take too-”

“She was kidding, Nova,” Nettie said, patiently.

Mal sighed and dug into his meal once more. “At least in the end we had chaos, like always. Don’t know what we’d do if things went dandy once in awhile.”

Simon thought that over. “I think it would be… boring.”

Everyone murmured their agreement, even Mal.

Jamey finally recovered from his foray as a fountain and asked, “Can I get a napkin?”

Kaylee smiled. “Well, yeah.” She looked at the wet table with a wry smile. “But we kinda have to wring these napkins out; ya kinda got milk everywhere.”

“Just use your sleeve,” Jayne advised his son.

“No, he can use a napkin!” River gave Jayne a look.

“Aww, c’mon!” Jayne protested. “It’s the manly thing ta do! What kind of a man uses a napkin?!”

Simon patted his mouth deliberately with the dry end of his napkin. “A civilized one?”

This time it was Vee who sprayed milk, luckily just through her mouth and not from her nose.

“This milk costs money, ya know!” Mal said, sliding his chair back to glare at the even bigger mess.

“Wow, that milk went far,” Nettie said, dropping from her chair to watch the liquid drip down the sides of the table.

It could’ve gone farther but Jayne had been unfortunate enough to be seated directly across from Vee and taken most of it directly to the face.

Simon wordlessly offered his brother-in-law a napkin.
