Summary: Would it kill Jayne to smile once in awhile?
SMILE!
“Ooooh, Cap’n! Look, pictures!” Kaylee pointed excitedly across the marketplace. “Can we go have one done of all of us?”
Mal looked doubtfully at the tent. “I dunno, we got a lot ta do…”
Kaylee’s face fell. “It’s just it’d be nice for us to have a family portrait. We could hang it in the mess.”
How was he going to argue with that? Mal sighed heavily and waved to the others. “C’mon all, Kaylee wants us to get our picture taken.”
The price wasn’t too bad and it was with only a little grumbling that everyone contributed coin here and there. The photographer smushed them all together and ordered them to look at the rubber toy he waved over his head.
“Smile!”
FLASH.
Ten minutes later, the photographer proudly presented them with a framed portrait. Everyone crowded around to get a good look.
There was a long silence.
“Gee, it’s too bad Jayne had to ruin it with that bitchy look on his face,” Wash said.
“The hell!” Jayne exclaimed. “I ain’t got a bitchy look on my face!”
“It wouldn’t kill ya to smile once in awhile, Jayne,” Kaylee said.
“I smile!”
Mal snorted.
As Jayne glared daggers at the captain, River took it upon herself to sculpt a smile on Jayne’s face with her fingers. He swatted at her. “Git away, girl!”
Simon looked up from the photo and blanched. “River, get away from him! Who knows what disease you’ll catch sticking your fingers in his mouth!”
River paid no heed and still tried to make Jayne smile, though he kept batting her hands away.
“At least she ain’t tryin’ to carve one out for you, Jayne,” Mal pointed out.
“Don’t go givin’ her ideas!” Jayne yelped.
“No knife, no carving. Just fingers,” River said. She kept at her work and asked curiously, “What do I taste like?”
That stopped Jayne’s struggling as his mind went to a very unclean place.
“NOTHING!” Simon snapped, grabbing River’s arm and yanking her away from Jayne. “She tastes like nothing, do you hear me?!”
The doc’s face was bright red, his chest rising and falling with each rapid, angry breath he took.
Jayne had to laugh, big belly laughs that had him doubled over, slapping his knees.
“Tastes like laughter.” River smiled.
