Chapter Nine - The Seduction

I'm getting a weird feeling about that passenger they picked up. She goes all weird when she mentions him. You've noticed it, right? I sense some badness there.

- email from Dawn Schafer to Mary Anne Shelten

"I really am a trouble magnet!" The Doctor looked up as Kristy jogged into the room and leaped into his arms for hugs. "It found me, I wasn't looking for it, I swear!"

The Doctor hugged her back, grinning. "I believe you, though I may have to invest in a homing device for you to wear."

"Maybe!" Kristy gave him one last squeeze and pulled back to look up at him. Some movement off of her periphery made her glance away and notice Gil standing nearby. Her face lit up. "Oh, hey! What're you doing here?"

Gil grinned. "I couldn't stay with them, after what they did to you. Besides, they would have had my head on a platter for helping you escape."

Thinking of how he'd protected her during her imprisonment, she went to him and hugged him tight. "Thank you so much. I don't think I would've made it without you."

"You're welcome," Gil whispered, hugging her back. "Glad you're alright."

The Doctor pretended not to watch as he set the coordinates for their next destination.

~*~

"See, it's your basic plunge waterfall and quite beautiful," The Doctor shouted over the roaring of the falls. He pointed at it. "See how it descends without making contact with the bedrock? There's a cave behind it we could go explore if you'd-" He glanced over at Kristy and abruptly stopped speaking when he found that she'd wandered away to Gil. Rolling his eyes he walked away, determined to still look at all the natural, untouched splendor of the planet without her. Even though coming here was supposed to have been his gift to her.

Gil and Kristy didn't notice The Doctor leave as Gil delicately held a pale blue butterfly in his hands.

"Oh, it's so pretty!" Kristy breathed, not wanting to shout over the tiny creature. "What species is it?"

"Don't know. But it's nice to look at, isn't it?" Gil opened his hands wider and the insect took wing, flying away over their heads. They watched it a moment before returning their gazes to one another. "I saw some colorful birds earlier. Let me show you."

"Cool!" Kristy exclaimed and took his offered hand.

~*~

They followed the colorful birds from tree to tree, whistling little tunes that the birds would finish, making Kristy laugh in delight. But finally, they all got tired of the game and when the birds moved on, Gil and Kristy didn't follow.

Kristy looked up into the branches of the tree they were standing under. "Hey, look, it's a fruit tree! Boost me up; I'm hungry."

As Gil pushed her up the trunk of the tree, his hand fondled her ass a moment.

"Hey!" Kristy giggled and swatted his hand.

"What?" Gil asked innocently.

Kristy pulled herself up into the tree and looked down at him with a fake, offended look on her face. "You tried to cop a feel!"

Gil smirked. "I couldn't help it; your rear end is so touchable!"

Starting to pick fruit, Kristy teased, "Well, The Doctor's able to control himself."

"That's because he can't see how beautiful you are."

She paused in the middle of her fruit picking and her heart twisted in her chest. If only he could. Keeping her voice light, she called down to Gil, "Heads up; I'm dropping some down for you."

Gil caught every piece she dropped and when there were no more in her arms she called, "Okay, that's enough. I'm coming down now. If I fall, be sure to give me a round of applause once I hit the ground." Cautiously, she started to climb down but she wasn't used to climbing trees with such smooth bark and it wasn't long before she lost her footing and fell from the tree.

Eyes widening in surprise, Gil rushed forward and half caught her, half broke her fall as he tumbled to the ground with his arms around her.

Kristy gasped and looked a little shaken by the experience, sitting up so she was straddling his lap unconsciously. "I-I'm sorry, I thought that I could..."

"That's okay; I really don't mind the position we're in." Gil winked, indicating the sprawl they were in with her in his lap.

"No, I- I guess not." Blushing, she gave him a shy smile. It'd been so long since she flirted with a guy and she'd never really been all that good at it in the first place. "Thanks for breaking my fall."

"Not a problem."

She knew she had to get up. The Doctor was probably off looking for them and they shouldn't have wandered so far off in the first place. But Gil looked so adorable, his blue-gray eyes shining and she hesitated. Aw, to hell with it. Leaning down, she gave him what was meant to be a quick peck.

But then he kissed her back more than she was expecting. And he was good at it. Conflicted, Kristy didn't know what else to do but to go with it, kissing him sweetly as his hands circled her bare waist, making her shiver.

"Oh there you two... oh, uh... I'm interrupting--"

Standing in the clearing was The Doctor, looking pensive. Kristy jumped up, wiping her mouth. "I got hungry and we were just..." She gestured to the spilled fruit. "I fell, and Gil..."

"Hungry for his mouth, I suppose," The Doctor said.

His tone hurt her feelings but she was determined that he not see that. Instead, she shook her hair back over her shoulders and looked at him defiantly. "Maybe."

The Doctor stared at her and she turned her attention away from him, nudging one of the fallen fruit with her toe as Gil slowly rose to his feet. "I don't know if we're gonna want to eat these after they've been on the ground."

Gil brushes himself off. "If you want to get more, I'd be happy to give you another boost."

"Yeah, I'll bet," she said, playfully and turned back to the tree once more. "Ready!"

Sure enough, when he boosted her up he caressed her bum and made her laugh. "Such a gentleman," she teased, pulling herself up.

"Sorry; if it bothers you, I'll stop."

"You don't have to worry about offending The Doctor's sensibilities. He's a modern forward thinking kind of guy." She started picking fruit again, mentally daring The Doctor to say something in response.

"I don't care about offending him. I care about whether or not I've offended you."

That was weird. Gil was talking about him like he wasn't there. "Doctor, do you want any of these?" She waited for a response before trying again. "Doctor? Why aren't you answering me?" She looked down and sure enough, no Doctor. "Gil, where is he?"

Gil looked around and shrugged, unconcerned. "Must have wanted to leave us alone."

"That was nice of him." She jokingly added, "Wanna make out?"

His mouth dropped open. "Did you--, are you being serious?"

She hadn't been, but his shocked yet excited tone was changing her mind. It was nice to feel wanted for once. "Yeah."

"I'll catch you this time," Gil said, holding his arms out.

"What? You want me to jump?" She clutched her armload of fruit and uneasily eyed the long drop.

"Well, not jump, no. Just fall back and I'll catch you."

"I don't know, Gil," Kristy said, nervously.

"You can trust me."

The only person she really, truly trusted was The Doctor. But if she wanted to get over him, move on to someone who could be with her, then she was going to have to open up and give trusting somebody else a try. Gil had already proven twice now that she could count on him. And he was a great kisser.

She swallowed, making her decision. "O-okay, I... I'll do it. Ready?"

"Sure am." Gil was poised, ready to catch her.

After whispering a quick prayer, she let herself fall backwards. She squeezed her eyes shut tightly and hoped that when they found her with her neck snapped, they'd take her back home so her mom could bury her.

But then she was caught securely in a pair of strong arms, only dropping a few pieces of fruit at impact. She opened her eyes and found Gil grinning at her.

"See, I got you." He held her close, grin widening.

Kristy stared up at him with a look of impressed amazement on her face. "Yeah, you did." She smiled slowly. "Good job, Gil."

"Thanks." He set her down on her feet gently. "Can we make out now?"

"Oh, hell yeah," Kristy murmured.

They spent the next hour feeding each other fruit in between sweet kisses that made Kristy giggle and Gil growl low in his throat, licking the pink juices from their fingers and each other's faces.

Eventually, they grew sleepy and curled up on the springy green grass to take a peaceful nap.

~*~

It was starting to get late. The big yellow sun was dipping low on the horizon and The Doctor took one last look around. This planet was beautiful; untouched by sentient life and able to continue on as nature intended without any interference. It was a shame he couldn't have shown more of it to Kristy; she would have enjoyed herself.

Brooding, The Doctor went back to the clearing he had last seen her and Gil. Entering it, he cleared his throat exaggeratedly to break up any steamy make-out sessions they may have engaged themselves in.

But instead of finding them locked together at the lips, they were stretched out on the ground, sleeping. To his relief, they weren't cuddling. They might have been, since Gil appeared to be hugging himself. Perhaps he'd been holding Kristy close and she'd pulled away to sleep peacefully on her own? He rather hoped that was the case.

Kristy slept with a soft smile on her face, one arm thrown over her head, the other crossed over her belly. Kneeling down beside her, The Doctor watched her a moment, reaching out tentatively, his fingertips hovering over her face, not quite daring to touch. He hadn't the right. As much as he wished he could bend his head and kiss her swollen, pink lips (pink from the fruit's juices or from the irritation of many kisses?) he knew that he couldn't. Instead, he lowered his hand to her shoulder and gently shook her.

She stirred slightly and opened her eyes. Seeing him, she smiled. "Where did you go?"

"Just walking around. There were some things I wanted to show you, but I suppose you were rather busy here."

Looking guilty, Kristy sat up. "I'm sorry about that. Are you mad at me?"

He swallowed hard. No, I'm just more lonely than I've ever felt in my life. "You can live your life your own way."

"That's an excellent question dodge."

"I'm not dodging anything. But we should get going."

"Fine." He could feel another barrier come up between them as she sensed he wasn't being completely honest with her. She reached out and shook Gil's ankle. "Gil? Wakey wakey, eggs and baccy!"

Gil woke slowly. "Hmm? Kristy?"

"That's me. It's time to go."

The Doctor started walking away before he could hear or see any more intimate behavior.

~*~

That night, The Doctor went to bed early so it was Gil that walked with her down the halls to bed. They stopped outside of the room that had been designated as his. Their conversation about the planet they'd just been on trailed off as they stared at one another.

"So, uh. Goodnight, Gil. Sleep tight." Kristy gave him a half smile and started to walk away.

"Kristy?"

She stopped and looked at him expectantly. "Hm? Yeah?"

"Could I-- I mean, would it be alright if I gave you a goodnight kiss?" True, she'd let him kiss her many times that afternoon, but she'd been acting politely distant since they'd reunited with The Doctor.

"Of course," she said, much to his relief. She came back to him and tilted her face up for the kiss he gave her.

She was the first to pull away for breath and he gave her a lopsided grin. "Wow... you're such a great kisser."

Surprised by the compliment, she laughed. "Thanks. You're the first to say so."

"Well, I hope I'm the last, too." He winked, letting her know he was teasing. Kind of.

She seemed to not know what to say, which appeared to be a first for Kristy. Rather than speaking, she looked down awkwardly but was smiling.

"Did I make you uncomfortable?" Gil asked, concerned.

"No..."

"Because it's just that it's the truth. I mean, I-I like you alot and I was wondering..."

"What?"

"If... well, you know." He made a strange gesture that tried to indicate that the two of them be 'together as a couple' but it looked more like he was trying to swat a fly.

Kristy shook her head, uncomprehending. "What?"

Flustered, Gil laughed it off. "It's late and I have no idea what my point was." Before she could tell him he was an idiot, he gave her a quick kiss. "See you in the morning."

"Hey, wait." She put a hand on his shoulder, stopping him from opening his door and stood up on tiptoe to give him a longer, deeper kiss. Letting out a soft satisfied sigh, she said, "Now that's a good night kiss."

Gil grinned. "I'll say."

"Sweet dreams." With that, Kristy continued on to her room and Gil watched her go, pressing his head to his door.

"You too," he murmured.

~*~

The next three months were not quite the worst he'd ever experienced in his life, but were by no means the most pleasurable. Even having two companions by his side, he was still lonely.

Kristy still helped him with TARDIS repair, but they'd be halfway into it when Gil would slip up behind her and wrap his arms around her, nuzzling her neck to make her giggle. He'd heard Kristy giggle before, but not like this. Soft and girlish accompanied by a sweetly teasing remark.

She'd still pay attention to him. On one adventure they'd had, he'd been injured and she'd tenderly looked after him, stroking his hair and speaking to him in a soft, soothing tone. Through the pain, he'd basked in being the sole person she was focused on, as Gil was away using his handy shape-shifter ability to get them out of trouble.

Though Gil was a great asset and was kind and good to Kristy, The Doctor still loathed him immensely.

~*~

Pressing her up against the wall, he breathed it passionately into her ear. "Spend the night with me."

Kristy went still, no longer rubbing up against him. "I don't think that I can..."

"Oh, it is too soon?" Gil asked, trying to be understanding while his body thrummed with desire.

"It's just that... I'm in love with someone else," she admitted softly, shamefaced. She looked up to quickly assure him, "And I'm trying to get over him, I really am, but it's just... so hard. "

Gil paused, processing this. "It's the Doctor, isn't it?"

"Why would you say that?" Kristy asked, awkwardly.

"Because I see the way you look at him."

Great, I'm Ms. Cellophane. Embarrassed, she hid her face in her hands. "Look, Gil, I really like you. I do. You're sweet and handsome and funny but..."

"I could be him."

She looked up, a little horrified at the notion. "I don't think that's a good idea."

"But if you can't get over him... then don't. I'll be him for you." He shifted his features and body until he resembled The Doctor exactly. "See?"

"But that's not fair... to you." Or me. Or him. Or... anybody.

Thinking she'd come around to wanting him after she got tired of Doctor-sex, he lied. "I'm fine with it. I want you to be happy."

"Oh, but Gil..." She traced a finger down his cheek, cursing herself for melting over The Doctor's freckles. "Don't you want to be there?"

"I will be... just, you don't want the real me there."

When he put it like that, it just underlined why this whole idea was wrong. "I can't."

He sighed, turning away. "Well, if you change your mind... the offer still stands."

Despair washed over her. He was always turning away from her. The Doctor. It hurt every single time he did it and even though this was an artificial situation, it ached just the same. So it was without thinking that she blurted, "Come to my room in ten minutes?"

Gil perked up. "Okay."

Kristy kissed him, just to test things out, she told herself. "Doctor..." She pulled back to see if he was going to be able to handle this.

Putting on his best Doctor voice and busting out The Doctor's trademark cheeky grin, he said, "That's me."

The picture was so complete that her heart ached and her eyes welled up with tears. "Tell me you love me?"

Gil/Doctor caressed her shoulders gently. "I love you."

Her tears spilled, blurring her vision. "Always?"

"Mmm, yes, always."

He had the voice perfectly. Knowing she was doing the wrong thing but hurting too much to care, Kristy took his hand and led him to her room.

~*~

The Doctor trotted excitedly to Kristy's room. "Kristy!" He called as he went. "I've got a surprise for you! No, I can't hold it in. It's what you've been asking to do for a few months now! Houdini's last performance!" He threw her door open, not bothering to knock as he usually did mostly because he was so excited and partly because he wanted to see how pretty she was sleeping again.

He wasn't expecting to see himself in bed with her, wrapped around her as she jerked awake and stared up at him in horror.

Hardly daring to believe what he was seeing, The Doctor did the only sensible thing: He turned and ran. He could hear Kristy leap up out of bed and Gil's alarmed shout of "Hey!" and a thud as she came after him, wrapped up in a sheet.

"I am so, so sorry!" she said, close to tears. " You weren't supposed to see that!"

"I could have guessed that!" The Doctor snapped, spinning to face her.

"It just happened! I didn't... I didn't mean to... It won't happen again!"

"Oh, won't it?" he asked, snidely. He regretted his tone when she looked hurt.

"No. It won't." She pulled the nearly translucent sheet tighter around her body, hardly hiding anything from view.

He looked away from the tempting display. "Maybe...you should get dressed."

"And pack my stuff?"

The lurch of his hearts prompted him to say, "No. I-I don't want that."

She nodded. "Do you want Gil to leave?"

Yes. "It's... not my place to kick your boyfriend out." Yes it is, it's my bloody ship and I can say who gets on or off it but what if he takes her with him?

"He's not my..." She stopped to think about it. "Well, I guess he is. And you're really pissed off now. As you should be." She took a shuffling step back. "I'll just..."

"Yeah, just... I have to... with the TARDIS..." He trailed off, not really knowing what else to say.

"Right. Um. I'll meet you out there in a few minutes." She practically ran back to her room, leaving him with the vision of the two of them twined together under the bedclothes, sleeping contentedly.

~*~

"We can never do this again!"

Gil gathered his clothes together, letting his features shift back to his own. "Okay. I... kinda figured it would go like this. I'll leave you alone until The Doctor can take me someplace else I can stay."

"What?" Kristy looked at him, baffled. But then her eyes widened with realization. "No, wait! I- I didn't mean this as in you and me!"

Hope made his face light up. "You didn't?"

"No. I meant, you and I can still be together but it has to be you and I. He can't play a part in it." She sat down next to him. "Just Gil and Kristy."

Gil thought of how responsive she'd been last night, how she'd kissed him desperately and clung to him, whispering The Doctor's name over and over. He doubted her words, wondering if they could ever have a relationship where The Doctor wouldn't be looming in the corner of her mind.

But she wanted him. She was saying as much at that moment. That was a step in the right direction, right?

He pressed his forehead to hers, smiling gently. "Just Gil and Kristy."

There was a very short, vague description in the last chapter. It was from The Doctor's point of view and we both know where his interests lie in this fic's context so he's not noticing cute boys. :P

But I've been picturing Tyron Leitso (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0500739/) as Gil. Have yet to suggest it to Nutmeg since she really hates Gil.

I know him from Wonderfalls, which he starred in with Caroline Dhavernas, the pretty lady we chose to portray Kristy. :D
