Meet the Kids

Here's that "Meet the Characters" of Songs From a Firefly I've been promising for awhile.
THE COBBS

James Simon Cobb : Pictured From "#1 Crush" (16 years old)
The oldest kid on board (he's older than Lady by a month), Jamey sets a good example for the other kids. Generally good natured, Jamey still succumbs to teenage angst now and then, usually stemming from his insecurity (not being as tough as his dad, or Lady rejecting him in favor of his cousin David). He tests at genius level but finds school boring because it doesn't challenge him. He prefers tinkering with electronics and can be found most often in the engine room with his aunt, Kaylee. He loves his little sister, Nettie, but isn't above being mean to her here and there, though that inclination fades over time.

Serenity Jane Cobb : Pictured From "The Soft Goodbye" (11 years old)
River and Jayne's youngest child, Nettie is a gifted singer who goes on to attend a prestigious music school on Osiris. By no means stupid, book learning doesn't come as easily to Nettie as it does to Jamey. But once she really puts her effort and concentration into it, she does very well. She spends most of her life in love with Mal Reynolds before she finally opens her eyes and sees who's been waiting for her.
The Tams

David Michael Tam: Pictured From "#1 Crush" (15 years old)
Simon and Kaylee's oldest boy seems to be nothing at all like his father, apart from his looks. But like Simon, David is protective of his little sisters, particularly Anna who is eight years younger than him. He's the best at imitating Simon but does it only with love, as he inherited Kaylee's sense of fair play and doesn't have a vindictive bone in his body. He's an exceptional artist but most prefers paintings since he gets a kick out of making a mess and ruffling his fastidious sister and father's feathers. He and Lady's childhood sweetheart status carries over into their adult years.

Nova Lee Tam: Pictured From "I'll Be There" (10 years old)
Her father's daughter, Nova wants to grow up to be a doctor just as good as Simon. While she's always careful to be clean, she's not fanatic about it since she knows that there's some instances where it's necessary to get dirty (performing surgery or leaping into a dumpster from an abandoned warehouse's window to get away from bad guys). Comes across as a know-it-all show off, but she's really not, just rather socially awkward. She spent her years before coming aboard Serenity mostly with Simon so it's understandable. Nettie is her best friend and she eventually wins over Vee.

Annabelle River Tam: Pictured From "Bad Moon Rising" (6 years old)
The baby on the ship, Anna has known nothing else BUT Serenity. She only got to attend school on Haven for a year and a month before the events of Miranda put an end to it. There's quite a large age gap between her and the other kids and she frequently gets left out of games. As a result, she makes up games on her own which are usually very weird or she follows Mal around, constantly asking questions. Can be a bit of a pest and often plays up her status as youngest to get attention. She mellows out over the years and becomes an elementary school teacher.
The Washburnes

Lady Alleyne Washburne: Pictured From "#1 Crush" (16 years old)
A natural leader, the other kids often look to Lady in hairy situations. Like her mother, she has a lot of respect for Mal and for years didn't quite have the nerve to tell him that she didn't want to inherit Serenity from him. Lady prefered dance and was taught for many years by River before attending a dance school a hop, skip, and a jump away from Nettie's music school. Though seemingly serious, she loved her father's humor and silliness and enjoys those qualities in David Tam.

Viola Margaret Washburne: Pictured From "Send Me A Song" (16 years old)
The middle child who seeks attention, mostly through aggressiveness. Is fiercely protective of her own, and after the events of Miranda, "her own" became pretty much every single person on Serenity. Not that she didn't care about anyone before, but she was more willing at that time to be mean to Nova or Anna but she now kicks the ass of anyone who so much as looks at them cross-eyed. Quick to anger, but also quick to forgive. Though she never forgets.

Benjamin Dale Washburne: Pictured From "The Gentleman Who Fell" (18 years old)
Ben is The Quiet One and pretty much gets along with everyone. His goal since the age of three was to be a pilot just like his dad. Up until Wash's death, he'd been giving Ben lessons. Ben became co-pilot after Miranda (still being a little young to be the replacement pilot) and later goes to flight school to get his license. He fell in love with Nettie Cobb when he was just twelve years old.
Hopefully this clears up/prevents any confusion. :)

Date: 2006-09-29 03:45 am (UTC)(I love that movie because it happens to be about a day quite similar to an important day in my life... or, you know, right on top of it. That day being my birthday.)
Also... hmm. I am going to be on the lookout for a Ben. I have a feeling I've seen one around.

Date: 2006-09-29 04:02 am (UTC)It's crazy. Kittens shouldn't whine like puppies and corn shouldn't giggle. Adam Baldwin's youth just brings it out in people I suppose.

Date: 2006-09-29 04:00 am (UTC)Cool, I got another set of eyes out there looking for Ben so between the three of us maybe we'll find someone appropriate. I never should've based him on that neighbor boy I had a crush on all those years ago. I never realized just how unique he was.

Date: 2006-09-29 04:45 am (UTC)I also have a suggestion for Ben: Bryton McClure

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryton_McClure
He kinda has the "silent, strong" thing going for him. (He used to play the little kid on Family Matters.)

Date: 2006-09-29 04:53 am (UTC)If you follow the link in "The Ballad of Serenity" I added a link that takes you to the music video of Milla Jovovich performing "The Gentleman Who Fell" and she's how I picture older!Nettie. It was watching the video that clinched it for me. And I found a great picture of her that seems really Nettie-like: She's done up all beauty-queen like but biting her lip playfully, probably messing up her lipstick. XD It's on the hard drive of my computer at home and I can't post it. *pout* Phooey. But the music video will have to do for now.

Date: 2006-09-29 05:24 am (UTC)((On a more serious note, it was really yucky searching for pics. There's this site called youngstarlets or whatever and it's this huge collection of pictures of pre-teen girls. You can't tell me that that site's target demographic is 20 something college chicks trying to find models for their fanfic OC's. *weirded out*))

Date: 2006-09-29 05:34 am (UTC)Well, there aren't any yucky promiscuous pictures of the young girls, it just slightly skeeved me out to see them all assembled on one site. And that you have to have a membership/pay/whatever to see a pic larger than a thumbnail image. Weird.

Date: 2006-10-03 09:54 pm (UTC)I think what helped me find pics was having a specific person in mind each time I wrote. The two Cobbs were there from the beginning and David became Omri Katz pretty fast but the rest were recent discoveries, particularly Lady and Ben as you know. :P

Date: 2006-10-03 10:07 pm (UTC)This weekend a little boy was in my store and he was a real-life Ben. I saw him and the first thought that popped into my head was 'Hey, so that's what Ben looks like.' Then I realized how big of a dork I am and went back to ringing his mother through. He looked remarkably like the person you are using, except he was like 3 or 4 years old.
