A Difficult Decision

Jayne lay awake with River dozing in his arms. He couldn’t quite fall asleep and truth to tell, hadn’t been able to sleep since she’d told him the amazing news three days ago that would change both of their lives. It hadn’t been far from his mind and he seemed to be reaching a kind of decision on how they were going to handle it. River wasn’t going to like it. Hell, he didn’t like it all that much himself.

“Riv?” He gave his wife a gentle shake. “Hey, baby girl. Wake up a sec.”

She let out a mewl of protest and stretched. He was ready to give her another shake, a harder one this time, when her eyes fluttered open. “I was dreaming.”

“Sorry, but I got somethin’ important to say.”

River woke up fully at that. “What is it?”

Now or never. He took a deep breath to prepare himself and to stall a little bit. “I don’t wanna raise the baby here.”

To his surprise, River nodded. “Children are like little plants. They need sunshine and fresh air to flourish.”

“Uh, right. So… you’re okay with that?”

“Yes.” River nestled on his chest and smiled lazily up at him. She looked so cute he raised a hand to gently stroke her hair. “Will you buy us a farm or cattle ranch? Or would we live with Ma?”

Jayne’s hand stilled. “Uh… little house.”

Her eyes narrowed and she sat up, kneeling next to his hip. “You intend to leave me there!”

“I’d make more money out here than on Pomona!”

“Then we won’t live on Pomona!”

“It’s all I can afford!”

“So we’ll save up!”

“The kid’ll be eighteen by the time we can afford somewhere fancy!”

“Who says I want fancy?”

“Fancy means I can get a job that’d feed you and the littlun and any other ones we have!”

They were both shouting now and Jayne knew it was only a matter of time until Mal stuck his nose in their business. He lowered his voice and said through gritted teeth, “I ain’t abandoning you. I’ll come back to you.”

“But I love you and I’ll miss you!” River’s face crumbled. “I can’t look after a baby alone; I still get confused sometimes!”

Jayne reached out and held River’s hands in his tightly. “Ma said she and Cora would come by to check on you every day. I’ll visit whenever I can and if I ever get hurt bad, I’ll retire and stay with you forever.”

“I don’t want you to get hurt!” River’s eyes went wild with the notion and Jayne quickly dropped her hands and cupped her face.

“Shhh. Neither do I. I don’t like this set up, either. I’ll hate not havin’ you around and… knowin’ I got me a pretty wife all lonely on land with lots o’ men linin’ up to take her from me.”

River shook her head. “No. No one could take me from you.”

He looked away, frowning. “Yeah, wait a few months. When you get sick of me never being around, those other guys will start looking good.”

It was River’s turn to cup Jayne’s face and she met his gaze seriously. “No one could ever take me from you. I swear it.”

Wordlessly, Jayne wrapped his arms around her and lay back down, tucking her close to his side. He always fell asleep holding River but during the night he usually let her go and rolled away. Somehow he had the feeling that he wasn’t going to be letting go any time soon. Not until he absolutely had to.
