Epilogue

One Year Later

Chad was wiping down the bar when a soft voice said, "Hola, sexy man."

Looking up, he grinned at the woman sitting directly in front of him. "What'll it be, chica pequeno?"

Mary Anne pouted. "I'm not a little girl; I'm your wife." But she dropped the pout and sighed, slouching over the bar. "Tequila, por favor."

"Rough day, mi chica dulce?" he asked, getting her drink. He considered his meager Spanish skills. "Is that better? Sweet girl. Hey, wait... corazon dulce... Sweetheart!"

She laughed but then resumed her pout, holding her arms out for a hug. "Si. Necissito un abrazo."

He didn't need any prompting and lifted the bar door up, coming around to pull her down from her stool and wrap her up in a big bear hug. "What happened?"

"One of the boys is having trouble with multiplication and the other kids started teasing him. I split it up but he was upset and took his anger out on me."

Gently, he lifted her chin up to look into her sad face. "Did he say something mean? Am I going to have to threaten an eleven year old?"

"It was pretty mean. But he was upset; he didn't mean it."

Chad sighed and started massaging her back, wishing he could take all of her problems away. "Well as soon as I'm done here, we'll go home and I'll give you a niiiiice loooong back massage, ok?"

"Mmmm. That sounds great." She nuzzled his neck. "Best husband ever."

"Best wife ever," he countered, hugging her.

"I'd better be," she teased and pulled away to hop back up on her stool to drink her much needed drink.

Seeking to cheer her up, Chad went back behind the bar and asked, "Wanna hear the latest village gossip?"

"Dish, dish!" Mary Anne slapped the bar top, punctuating each syllable.

Chad leaned closer and lowered his voice; there were some people in the village who knew a good amount of English to piece together what he was saying. "Juan's planning on cheating on his wife."

"No!" Mary Anne exclaimed, looking horrified. "Poor Adelina! With who?"

"Dulce." Chad named the most immoral woman in the village, making a face.

Mary Anne made a face too. "Ewwww. She has pubic lice. Tell him to be careful."

Nearly swallowing his tongue, Chad sputtered, "Mar-- Tess! That's so wrong!"

"I'm not just saying that! She really does!"

"Who told you that?"

"She did. When she was picking up one of her kids from school." She mimed scratching her crotch and said in a high-pitched voice, " Ay, Senora Mitchell! Mi-"

Chad waved his hands, halting her impersonation. "Ok, ok, I get it. Ew. Ew, ew, ew. That is so disgusting."

"Oh, I know. I didn't even know what to say. I think I just said, Que lastima and left it at that." She shuddered at the memory.

"What's that mean?"

"What a pity."

"Oh. Well you got that right." He nodded and looked at the clock, sighing. "Ten minutes 'til freedom."

Mary Anne looked at him thoughtfully. "If you don't like your job, maybe we should go somewhere else and see what you can find."

He frowned, not wanting to move her around again. That hadn't gone so well last time; they'd been lucky to find this village. "It's fine, Sweetheart. You love working with these kids."

"But I want you to be happy, too." She reached out for his hand and squeezed it.

Chad raised her hand up to his lips and softly kissed it. "I shouldn't complain. This is better than doing manual labor."

"Hey, doing manual labor is how you met me. That's not so bad," she said with a wink.

He laughed. "Yeah, that's true, but I'm getting too old for that sort of thing."

Mary Anne leaned across the bar and kissed his forehead. "You're only as old as you feel."

"Some days I feel 25, other days it's 65."

"You're only 46, sweetie."

"But that's not how I feel, " he said, giving her a look.

"Well, yes, but... 65?"

"In my knees."

Her curious expression turned swiftly to concern. "You should see the doctor."

He gave her another look. "And be prescribed rat tails and lizard spleens? No thanks. I'm just getting old, sweetie. Can't turn back time. It's fine."

"He's a good doctor! Educated in the city and came back here to help the people he grew up with. He won't give you rat tails and lizard spleens. He does that to the superstitious old ladies but he also slips prescription meds to their children to slip into their food."

Chad sighed, knowing that she wasn't going to let this go until he gave in. "Ok, if it'll make you feel better I'll go."

"Thank you."

Just then, Dulce approached the bar, glaring at Chad. She'd come on to him once and been soundly rebuffed; she'd been bearing a grudge since. "Dreenk," she snapped, holding her glass out to him.

He took it, making an expression of distaste. "What kind?"

Sighing and looking very put out, Dulce said something to Mary Anne that made her face turn ten shades of red. Chad didn't even want to know.

"Um, what you've been serving her all night," Mary Anne said, obviously giving him the edited version.

Chad poured it and then gestured for the payment which she slapped down onto the bar with a grunt and then snatched the drink out of his hand, going back to the group of men she'd been entertaining.

"Should I wear gloves if I'm gonna handle her money?" Chad asked, rolling his eyes.

Mary Anne giggled into her hand. "Wouldn't be a bad idea. I wouldn't want you to get something and pass it on to me, too."

"That's so disgusting..." He shook his head, gingerly putting Dulce's money in the register. "So, was your whole day bad, or just that one part?"

"Just that one part." She finished off the rest of her drink and added, "The best part was when my handsome husband came to visit me."

"Oh yeah? What he'd do?"

"Mmm. Kissed me."

"He must sweep you off your feet daily."

"He does." She folded her arms on the bar and rested her head on them, still looking up at him with that beautiful smile on her face. "Got me so in love with him I hardly know what to do with myself."

Chad leaned across the bar. "He's one lucky man, to have met you, and have you run away with him."

"I couldn't leave him." She lifted her head, looking serious. "He needed me."

"He did, and he does." Chad put his hand over hers. "And he can't believe that after all this time, you don't care what he did."

She shook her head. "I don't. He's my baby."

"He loves you," Chad said with a small smile.

"I love him, too."

Grinning, Chad leaned in for a kiss which she warmly returned until catcalls and cheers from across the bar made her break away, blushing but smiling.

Chad laughed and took a bow. "Gracias!" He looked at the clock again and said to Mary Anne, "Two minutes. I'm just gonna clean up and Diego will take over."

"Okay, baby." She sat and waited patiently, swinging her legs as he wiped the bar down a final time and threw out some bottles. He was still fussing with the bottles when Diego shooed him out from behind the bar.

"Gracias, amigo," Chad called over his shoulder as he circled around the bar again and took Mary Anne's hand. "Ready?"

"Buenos noches, Diego," Mary Anne called to the bartender and then turned her attention to Chad. "Let's go home, Danny. You owe me a backrub."

"I sure do. Let's go to, um... nuestro casa?"

"Good enough," she said, grinning cheekily as they left the bar hand in hand.

Well. This might just constitute the happiest ending possible for them in this situation.

But still! *blames it all on Rita*

I still think they're meant to be though, and the worst thing is: when I re-watch the DayBreak episodes now, I can't help but think "Aww poor Chad. But in a few days he'll meet Mary Anne and everything will be okay!" and then I come crashing down to reality and everything is sad again :-(

More in this 'verse! Kristy and the Doctor! Write eeeeet!

Awww! That's how Nutmeg and I felt while watching Daybreak. "Don't be sad, Chad! You'll meet Mary Anne and everything will be- Oh, wait. Okay, be sad Chad."

More Kristy and The Doctor will be posted tomorrow! :D

Oh, how sweet! *huggles them and their cute cuteness* Thanks for planting the thought of Chad tending bar just like Jimmeh (hottest bartender evah) into my mind, though ;) I'm glad that, despite it all, they are happy together - thank you both for writing this and sharing it! ♥

Well, thank you for always reading and reviewing; it made me and Nutmeg squee happily. :D (And it was Nutmeg lobbying for Chad being a bartender from the beginning, so I'll pass the thanks on to her.)

it kinda makes me sad that they don't go back and make amends. Poor Dawn must be worried sick. Maybe you can make an epi-epilogue, in which Mary Anne is pregnant and they think they should go back to LA to have the baby. They run into Brett who's not so mad now and wants to drop the charges on Chad :P

But this is still a very sweet ending *swoons*

Well, I'm not saying it'll happen, but this ending sort of leaves things open for a sequel. We'll see. :) I'm glad you liked the ending anyway.

lol Really? Because I don't even know what she said. XD I left it open to your interpretation because I'm sure you guys could think of more funny/outrageous stuff than me.

I was thinking about her "nature" and how she wanted Chad as well as how jealous she has to be about Mary Anne. So I assumed that she'd tell MA that she wanted a protein shake; that would certainly make MA blush like fire. LOL

Hurrah!

I'm going to say it again: hurrah!

I mean, obviously things aren't perfect, but it's a life--and a pretty good one. Young hot sweet wife, older, committed, semi-stable sexy husband... I mean, what else do you need?

Yeah, it's not quite a fairy tale ending but they seem happy enough so we're not going to complain.

Oh now THIS was what the last chapter was missing! A very romantic, nice ending with them settling down! Although I still wonder how Dawn and Co reacted when they found Mary Anne's letter...

Loved the more cannonical Chad/MA story! *points to icon*

Them finding the letter could be an interesting short story. It would be fun to write everyone's reactions.

I'm glad you liked it! *coos over the icon*

I'm sorry to see this end, but it was fun while it lasted. I hate that they are still hiding out but I suppose it's the only way for this to end (although in my head, Kevin moves to LA, meets Dawn, and finds evidence to throw Brett and Rita in jail instead, and then finds Chad and Mary Anne and brings them home) *giggles maniacally at the thought of Rita becoming someone's bitch*

Anywho, I loved it and can't wait for whatever else you have coming out!
