CHAPTER NINE

I told Logan I wanted to cool our relationship and what does he do? He surprises me with dinner at his house and gives me all these presents. It’s like he isn’t listening to me at all.

- diary entry from Mary Anne Spier, five years ago

“Can you do a spin?”

“Uh, I can skate backwards.”

They’d both been looking for a change of pace, so when Mary Anne had suggested ice skating for their next date, Chad had agreed. He’d been a good enough skater so he shouldn’t make an ass out of himself.

“Me too!” Mary Anne started to skate backwards to show him, facing him so they could still talk. “When did you learn how to skate?”

“I was about eleven or twelve. My dad wanted me to try out a bunch of sports to see what I liked, so I learned to skate and joined a junior hockey league. But I only did that for two years, then I quit and played football instead.”

“Did you spend any time in the penalty box?”

He chuckled a bit. “Oh, yes. I was pretty big for my age, so I’d always get too rough with the other team’s guys.”

“Big bully.” She smiled at him affectionately and went to skate by his side, taking his hand. “Was that why you quit? Did all the other mommies think you were a little hellion?”

Chad smiled and shrugged. “Maybe. A few complained to the refs. But I quit because I wanted to play a sport outside. Can’t skate outdoors in LA. So when’d you learn to skate?”

“I was four years old. One of my babysitters took me and my friends Kristy and Claudia. It was really fun but Kristy was best at it. She’s kind of like you; she’s into all kinds of sports.”

He gave her hand a squeeze. “I see. And what do these friends do now? Still live out East?”

“Claudia’s studying art at NYU and Kristy’s at UConn majoring in psych with a minor in criminal justice.” She nudged him gently. “You must be so bored of hearing about my friends. What about yours?”

“Hmmm?” Chad had been staring off into space but shook himself. “My friends? Well, uh, I haven’t kept in touch with most friends from high school. There’s one living in Oregon, and another’s a bartender downtown but I don’t really see them much anymore.”

“Well, what about your friends now? Who do you watch the game with or whatever it is guys do?”

Chad shrugged. “Sometimes I watch the game with some people from work, but mostly I just watch it by myself.”

“Oh,” Mary Anne said, softly, biting her lip. Chad clenched his jaw tightly. Great, now she knew he didn’t have any friends. “Hey, do you want to get some hot chocolate?”

He nodded, feeling like a loser. “Sounds good.”

“Hold on.” She led them close to the wall, out of traffic from the other skaters and stood up on the tip of her skates to give him a long, sweet kiss.

He smiled brightly into her upturned face. “What was that for?”

“For being Chad Shelten. Now come on, I want some hot chocolate to warm me up.” Oh, Chad could think of a much nicer way to warm her up…

But they removed their skates and went to stand in the line. They weren’t there for long when Mary Anne announced she had to use the bathroom and dashed off.

“Wow, congrats, dude.”

Perplexed, Chad faced the surfer guy behind him who was leering appreciatively. “What?”

“Your daughter is hot. Awesome genes, man.”

Chad glared at the guy hard enough to set the bastard’s hair on fire, had such a thing been possible. “Not my daughter, jackass.”

“Sorry, niece. Jesus.”

He glared at him again over his shoulder and fumed in silence until Mary Anne came back. She slipped her arms around him, pressing a kiss to his cheek, and he gave the guy a smug smile.

“Dawn’s going to her dad’s house for the weekend so you can come stay with me if you want.” She blushed a little at how forward she was being, but gazed up at him hopefully.

“Yeah, sounds great.” He smiled charmingly.

“Also? Um, the garbage disposal is acting weird so if you could take a look at it…?”

The surfer guy snickered at that and Chad bristled and wanted to punch his face in. Play it cool. “Anything you want, sweetheart.” He kissed her softly, right there in line, caressing her cheek.

“I’m not making you feel like a plumber for asking, am I?” she asked, worriedly. “You know I don’t want you to stay with me just to fix things around the apartment, right?”

Chad chuckled. “Of course I do. But hey, I’ll be there anyways, so I’ll check it out.”

They’d reached the front of the line and Chad squeezed her side. “What are you getting? Just regular hot chocolate?”

“Yes. And marshmallows!”

“Okay, marshmallows it is. What size?”

“Small. I don’t think I can take anything bigger.”

And just like that, the surfer dude burst out laughing.

Chad spun around to face the guy. “Is there a reason you’re laughing at a normal conversation you’re not even a part of?”

The dude held his hands up. “Be cool, dude, I’m just chilling.”

Mary Anne frowned at the guy then up at him. “Chad, what’s the matter?”

Chad shook his head and turned back. “I’ll tell you in the car.” He placed their orders, paid, and got their drinks quickly.

“Are we leaving already?” Mary Anne asked, looking confused.

“Not if you don’t want to. But I’ll just tell you later.”

“Okay. I want to watch the skaters while we drink.” They found a bench to sit on and Mary Anne cuddled into his side, resting her head on his shoulder.”

Chad took a sip of his drink, feeling content while still feeling too old. His daughter. Christ.

“You know, it’s kind of weird…” Mary Anne said, thoughtfully.

“What’s that?”

“Sometimes it feels like I’m the older one and you’re the younger one.” She looked up at him. “Do you know what I mean?”

What the hell was she talking about? He furrowed his brow. “No.” But he smiled a bit to relax her. “How’s that?”

She scrunched her face up in thought and Chad grinned at how cute she looked. “Like when I have to tell you to be a little nicer sometimes. And…” She trailed off, thinking, then laughed. “I swear this was more well thought out, I just somehow assumed you’d know what I meant…”

Chad sighed. “You wanna know what that guy said while you were in the restroom?”

“It was bad, wasn’t it?” She searched his face. “Do I really want to know?”

He shrugged. “It was just annoying. He congratulated me on having good genes because he thought you were my daughter. And when I said you weren’t, he thought you were my niece.”

Mary Anne’s face turned bright red. “That jerk!”

“I was calling him worse in my head,” Chad said.

“He’s been watching us all day; he knows perfectly well you’re not my father or uncle. He was just being mean.” She looked indignant at the very notion of anyone trying to be mean to him.

Chad looked at her carefully then looked away. “Ah.” He drank his hot chocolate in silence.

“Chad?”

“Hmm?”

“You said… age didn’t matter to you. Are you changing your mind?”

He sat up straighter. “No, I just thought- Well, I am old enough to be your father, but I don’t care what anyone thinks. It’s just… ridiculous that they make assumptions.”

“It looked like it was bothering you,” she said, quietly.

Chad smiled sadly. “Only thing that bothers me is waking up in the morning and finding another gray hair.”

“So I’ll pluck it out for you before you wake up, how’s that?” she ruffled his hair and grinned big.

Chuckling, he hugged her gratefully against his side. “But that’ll wake me up! Where’s the logic in that?”

“Well, you won’t see the gray hair! It’ll be hidden and I’ll just tell you I saw lice.” She struggled to keep a straight face.

“Lice?” He raised his eyebrows. “I’ll bet my lice would crawl onto your head in the middle of the night. More hair to live in.”

Mary Anne started laughing out loud along with him. “Maybe we could charge them rent!”

“Damn right! They can’t live in my apartment for free.” He snuggled her. “Only you can do that.”

Giggling, she brushed a kiss lightly over his lips. “Are you ready to leave?”

“Mmm hmm. Let’s go.”

They discarded their cups and headed out to his SUV, hand in hand.

“Woo! Climate contrast!” Mary Anne exclaimed once they were outside. Chad had to agree; after the cool, chilly air of the rink it felt like a sauna outdoors. He shrugged out of his jacket, glad that he’d worn a t-shirt beneath it and glanced over at Mary Anne.

She had just tugged off her sweater, revealing a little pink tank top underneath that had ridden up quite a bit, exposing most of her midriff. He gawked at her a bit, admiring the smooth skin he’d kissed many times already.

“Now, Mary Anne, you have no right to look this sexy in a parking lot. You however, have every right to look sexy in my car.” He held the door open for her and winked.

“What did I do?” She climbed in, clueless as to her effect on him.

He gave her a lopsided grin. “You were yourself.” He closed the door and got in on his side.

She smiled at him prettily and leaned over to give him a kiss. It got heated fast since he was already turned on beyond belief by her little show. When he broke the kiss, she whimpered in protest.

“Oh hey, before I forget, you’ve gotta check out these screens in the back of the headrests. Come on.” Chad opened the door again and switched to the backseat, as eager as a child at Christmas. Looking confused, Mary Anne followed him.

Once they were both settled in the backseat, Chad tapped one of the screens. “So if we ever take a roadtrip and you get bored, you can sit back here and watch a DVD.”

She nodded slowly. “That’s… nice.”

He turned toward her and grinned wickedly. “You know what else the backseat is nice for?”

“What?” Her eyes widened as she caught on. “Chad, no.”

He tried to look innocent but failed miserably. “It was just a suggestion. Besides,” he tapped the window, “I have tinted windows, sweetheart. No one would see us.”

“Is the windshield tinted, Chad?” she asked, dryly.

Oh. Good point. He frowned then brightened as an idea struck him. “Nope, but I got these!” He reached under the driver’s seat and pulled out a zippered pouch that unfolded into a window shade designed to keep the worst of the heat out of the car. He arranged it over the windshield and sat back, proudly. “There; hidden from nosy skaters.”

She seemed intrigued by the idea but still resisted. “I don’t know…”

Chad shifted uncomfortably. “Well, if you don’t want to, that’s fine, it’s just… well, you look really sexy in that tank top and-”

“You’re sure no one will see?”

“Positive. Sometimes at work I sit back here and watch DVD’s and no one sees me.”

She smiled, amused by the thought of him outside playing hooky, watching one of his action movies in secret. “You’re such a dork.”

“What? I got some good movies back here!” He reached out and lightly played with the strap of her tank top. “But, point is, no one’s gonna see us. Promise.”

Mary Anne took a deep breath. “…okay.”

He smiled and tugged at her tank top, then paused. “Only if you’re sure.”

“I’m sure.”

Positively beaming, he stripped the tank top off of her and groaned softly at the sight of her black lace bra.

“I thought you liked me in that,” she said, teasingly, as he dropped the top on the seat beside them.

“I do. But I kinda like you better…” he unclasped the bra and sighed as it fell loose. “Like this.”

Her breath came faster as he cupped her, kissing her neck. He stroked her just the way she liked and she threw her leg over his to straddle him, grinding against his hardening erection.

“Can we…?” she squeaked. “I need…!”

“Tell me,” he rasped out.

“You!”

His eyes glittered. “You have me.” His hands went to his belt buckle and Mary Anne shakily reached for her own and stood up to get her jeans down enough for them to really get to work. She did a little shimmy to get them down faster and Chad made a soft noise at the movement, eyes riveted to her as he jerked his pants and boxers down to his knees.

“Come here, sweetheart.” He held his arms out to her and she slid into his lap, gasping as his hairy thighs abraded her softer skin. “Ready?”

“I… I’ve never…” she swallowed.

“Never what?” he grinned, cupping her cheek. “Did it in a car?”

“I’ve never been on top before.”

Couldn’t let her have control just once, could you, Huck? “Looks like we should remedy that, then.”

He helped her get situated over his erection and then groaned as she slowly sank down on him. A gasp ripped out of her throat and he tore through a haze of pleasure to focus on her.

“Are you all right?”

Her fingers tightened their grip on his shoulders. “You’re in so deep,” she said, wonderingly. “I’ve never felt you so deep before.”

Ah, shit. He fought really hard to keep from coming. “H-hold still a second, sweetheart. You’re… you’re really doin’ it for me right now and I’m going to ruin this for us if you don’t…” He held her hips tightly to keep her from moving and kept his eyes shut, fighting for control. Finally, when it felt like he wasn’t going to embarrass himself, he smoothed his hands up her sides. “Go, sweetie.”

Usually when he made love to Mary Anne, she made soft little kitten noises he adored. She’d coo and sigh and whimper sweetly, cry out his name when she came or exhale a shuddering sigh of pleasure.

Mary Anne on top was another story. She moaned, low and womanly, as she bounced on him, head lolled back. She panted harshly and instead of bestowing soft kisses on his chest and face, she sucked hard at his neck and he was sure it was going to leave a mark later. It was damn exciting to see her come apart like this, knowing he’d turned her into a wild woman.

She was getting closer. Her thrusts came faster and she was chanting his name along with them. Then her inner muscles clenched around him so tight, she drew the most pleasurable orgasm he’d ever had from him, making his vision go fuzzy. But he wasn’t so blind that he missed it when she tipped her head back and screamed when she came.

Amazed, he caught her when she slumped forward bonelessly.

“Okay, sweetheart?” he asked, stroking her hair shakily.

“Mmm.” She cuddled close to him, catching her breath.

“Think you liked that.”

“Uh.”

“Someone probably heard that scream of yours; we should get dressed and get out of here.”

“Mmm.”

Damn, she was officially down for the count. Chad scooped up her bra and tank top and managed to coax her into sitting up on her own so he could dress her. Then came the difficult part of lifting her off of his softened erection and her soft disappointed sound went to his heart.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart, but…” He grabbed his coat and found the napkins that had come with their hot chocolate and cleaned them up to the best of his ability. Then he tugged up their pants and lay her gently back against the seat. “Do you want to sit back here or up front with me?”

Her eyes fluttered open and she smiled at him. “With you.”

“That means you have to get up.”

She whimpered again.

“Fine.” He sighed as if he was very put out. “I’ll carry you.”

He got out and opened the front door and arranged her gently in the seat, snapping her seatbelt in place. “You hungry?”

“Mmm.”

He grinned. “I’ll just take us to the teriyaki place you liked so much last time. You want what you had before?”

She nodded and reached out to trace his jaw, lovingly.

“Oh, you are so going to be on top more often, Spier.”

After an extended amount of making out, Mary Anne finally let Chad out of the car so he could get their food. She sank back in the seat and smiled. God, she felt fantastic.

From her purse, her cellphone rang. Maybe it was Chad, already missing her. She picked it up and purred, “Hello?”

Choked sobbing from the other end finally pulled her out of her post-coital afterglow. “Hello?!” she repeated.

“Mary Anne?” Another choked sob. “God, I miss you so much.”

“Logan, I can’t talk to you right now,” she said, then amended it to, “I can’t talk to you ever.”

“Why, who are you with? That… that pig from the station that wanted you?!”

Fear clutched at her insides. “Logan, what do you want?”

“I just… I just wanna talk. We haven’t talked in…”

“That’s because we broke up,” Mary Anne reminded him. “I’m seeing someone else now and you should do the same.”

“No! I want you!”

“Well, you can’t have me! So just-”

“I have to go. Can… can I see you later?”

“No!”

“Fucking bitch.” He slammed the phone down.

Shaking, Mary Anne pressed the end button and dropped the phone on the seat beside her.

Just then, Chad returned with their bag of food, whistling cheerily. “Hey, I got-” He stopped when he saw her face. “What’s the matter? I was only gone five minutes.”

“L-Logan called me.”

Chad’s expression darkened. “What’d he say?”

“He…” she swallowed. “He told me that he misses me and… he wanted to know who I was with.”

“And that’s when you hung up on him, huh?” he prodded her.

Suddenly cold, Mary Anne started rubbing her bare arms. “He sounded so… I’ve never heard him sound that way before.”

Chad took one of her hands in his. “Look, it doesn’t matter. He was probably coked out of his mind.”

Yeah, that was comforting. “I told him that we’re over, that I’ve moved on and maybe he should too. He didn’t like that.”

“Yeah, I’ll bet he didn’t.” Chad shrugged. “Look, you sure you’re okay? He didn’t say anything else to upset you? Because if he did, I’d be happy to end his existence.”

Mary Anne shook her head. “It’s just… he’s getting worse. The first night we ever spent together, I had my cellphone off and he called the apartment twenty-two times. It freaked Dawn out.”

Chad’s forehead creased in concern. “That’s not normal, Mary Anne. You should have told me about him doing that.”

She blushed. “I know. I promised Dawn that if anything else happened, I’d tell you. So… I’ve told you.”

“Good. If he contacts you again, you just tell him that your boyfriend knows where he lives and he’d better not try to bother you again.”

Mary Anne smiled at him a little. “Chad? Could… maybe, could you help me get a restraining order against him?”

“Of course I can, sweetheart. Come by the station tomorrow and I’ll show you what to do.”

She heaved a big sigh of relief and launched herself into his arms, feeling safer in his embrace. “Oh, thank you.”

He held her tight. “No problem. I’d do anything for you.”

She closed her eyes and focused on his warmth and strength before pulling away a little. “In the meantime, I’d better get my number changed,” she said, trying for a little humor.

Chad chuckled, running his hand over her hair. “That’s a really smart plan.”

Mary Anne kissed his cheek. “Take me back to your place?”

“Oh, you bet.” He started the engine and grinned at her.

She settled back into her seat, snapping the seatbelt in place as she smiled back. Picking up her phone, she shivered and then switched it off.
