CHAPTER EIGHT
I hope everything is well in Stoneybrook; have things warmed up yet? The weather here has been fabulous, but that’s what you expect from California. Hopefully Dawn hasn’t mentioned this to you yet, but I’ve started seeing someone…
- email to Richard Spier from Mary Anne Spier
Mary Anne woke in small degrees. First she was aware of warm breath fanning the back of her neck, which made her giggle and pull away to get away from the tickling feeling. Then she could feel the strong, corded arms locked around her waist. Next, when she arched her back to get close to the warm chest pressed against her back, she felt a slight soreness between her thighs and smiled.
Last night, after she and Chad had dozed for awhile, they’d woken up and made love a second time, this time on their sides, face to face… he’d called her amazing. Happily, Mary Anne shoved her face into the pillow to hold back another embarrassing squeal of delight.
She lay there for some time, re-living each second of the previous night until she started feeling the uncomfortable need to use the bathroom. When she shifted to leave the bed, Chad’s hold on her tightened.
“Chad?” She tapped his forearm. “Chad, I need to get up.”
He grumbled sleepily. “Why?”
“I… I just do.”
Chad blinked himself awake and gave her a sweet, dopey smile. He released her but was sure to pin her in place with one long leg, so he could raise up onto one of his elbows. “I’ll carry you. Where do you need to go?”
She blushed. “This is silly, I’ll go by myself.”
“Mary Aaaannneee.”
“I need to use the bathroom, okay?”
“Well, heck, I can carry you there easily. See these biceps?” He flexed, making the breath catch in her throat. She couldn’t let him see how easily he affected her; his ego would get much too big for the room.
“I may have noticed them before,” she said, feigning polite interest. “What about them?”
“What about them?” he repeated, mildly offended. “Well, I’m just saying it’s no problem to carry you to the bathroom is all.”
“Hmmm, well, I’m going to have to see it to believe it, Sergeant Shelten.” She giggled and gave him a playful shove.
“Don’t believe me, huh? I’ll show you.” In a flash, he was up and out of bed, hoisting her up into a fireman’s carry.
“EEEEEE!” Mary Anne kicked her legs in protest. “You’re tickling me!”
“That’s what you get for not admiring my biceps!”
“I admire them, okay? Now just… put me down!”
“Nope. It’s not a trek across Asia. I’m just carrying you to the bathroom.”
Mary Anne giggled uncontrollably. “Okay, okay, just move your hands away from the backs of my knees at least.”
There was a long pause. “…Whyyyyy? Are you ticklish there?” And he proceeded to tickle the dickens out of her as he carried her down the hallway.
“CHAAAAAAAAAD! We’reatthebathroomnowputmedownbeforeIpeeonyou!!”
“All right, all right. Relax, woman.” He set her down gently. “I’ll be waiting on the other side of the door to carry you back to bed.”
She paused in the doorway. “Could you whistle?”
“I could. Why do you want me to?” he asked, looking puzzled.
“Because I don’t want you to hear me when I’m… you know.”
Chad rolled his eyes. “C’mon, Mary Anne. I’ve seen every single part of you and you’re embarrassed that I might hear you pee?”
“That’s different! Will you please?” She widened her big brown eyes, giving him what he’d come to call “the puppy eyes.”
“Oh God, not the eyes! What did I tell you about using the eyes on me?”
The puppy eyes continued.
Chad sighed, admitting defeat. “Fine. Go pee. I’ll whistle.”
Smiling, Mary Anne pulled his head down for a long, lingering kiss. “Thank you, Chad.”
His smile was dazed when they drew apart. “No problem, sweetheart.”
Mary Anne quickly used the bathroom and washed her hands, taking a moment to inspect her hair in the mirror and make a face at her particularly bad case of bed head. Chad still found her desirable after looking at that mess?
Finally, she opened the door and his rendition of an old Beatles tune abruptly cut off. “Okay, I’m d- CHAD!”
Without so much as a how do you do, he’d scooped her up, this time in a more comfortable hold. “Back to bed now! Unless you want me to carry you into the kitchen for a snack…?”
She glanced back over his shoulder at the living room and frowned at how the shadows fell. Uh oh; what time was it?
“Actually, Chad, I think I have to go.”
He stopped in place. “You wanna leave… now???”
“I don’t want to leave,” she quickly assured him. “But I sort of have this paper due tomorrow that I haven’t started yet. And if I leave now to go work on it that leaves me all of tomorrow for us to do stuff.”
“Well, what if I just refuse to let you go, huh? What then?”
She gave him puppy eyes.
“Ah, hell.” He heaved a long suffering sigh. “Okay, I guess I’ll let you go now so I can see you tomorrow.” Reluctantly, he placed her back on her feet.
His expression was so disappointed Mary Anne knew she couldn’t leave him like that. “I can use a shower first, though.”
Immediately he perked up. “We should save water; shower together.”
“Dawn’s always talking about conserving our resources,” Mary Anne said, backing into the bathroom.
“That’s true. Smart step-sister you go there.” He followed her. “And let’s face it, water’s expensive these days.”
“Mmm hmm. And you wouldn’t say no to a young co-ed scrubbing your back for you, would you?”
“Only if I was a crazy man.”
“I don’t know,” Mary Anne said, teasingly. “You’re pretty crazy.”
“Am I now? Well maybe I won’t scrub your back then.” He crossed his arms, raising his eyebrows.
Mary Anne made the puppy eyes at him and shrugged sadly. “If that’s what you want.”
He dropped his arms. “… We’ll see how it goes,” he said, trying to resist the eyes.
She bit her lip to keep from laughing. “Okay, Chad, whatever you say.”
“Just get in the tub already.” He shooed her in and followed after, sliding the curtain closed after him.
“Oh no, I don’t have my shampoo here!”
“No problem; use mine.” He turned the water on, testing the temperature on his foot before lifting the switch that made the water come out of the shower head.
She made a face. “But then I’ll smell like a boy!”
Chad sighed. “Then put on some perfume when you get home. What, do I have to think of everything?” He winked at her.
“I like to make you feel important,” Mary Anne said, smiling sweetly up at him as she stepped under the spray to soak her hair.
He grinned back. “Thanks. But I am important. I have a very important job. I wear a suit and everything.”
“You wear it well,” she said as he lathered up her hair with his shampoo. A bit of it slid down her forehead. “Ow! Shampoo in my eye!”
“Hold still; I’ll splash water in it.” He splashed the water in lightly, an adorable look of concern on his face.
“Okay, that’s enough. I think it’s fine now.” She gave her eye a little rub anyway.
Chad gave her cheek a nuzzling kiss. “You sure? It doesn’t require professional medical attention?”
She giggled. “I’m sure.” He continued rinsing her hair out and then reached for a bottle of conditioner. She frowned up at him. “You’re too tall.”
“Too tall for what?”
“You can wash my hair but I can’t wash yours.”
“Ah… well, that’s okay, I don’t have as much to wash as you.” He continued after a thoughtful pause, “You could wash my chest hair if you want…”
“Why, does it have dandruff?”
He swatted her behind as she launched into a gigglefit. “No, I was just trying to come up with something for you to wash but if you’re gonna make jokes, never mind.”
“Eeek! Okay, okay, sorry! Maybe I can wash your back if you’re not still mad at me about that?” She pouted a little, rubbing the spot he’d lightly whacked.
Chad smirked and switched places with her. “Not yet, at least. Go to town.”
Mary Anne grabbed the soap and started lathering his back. She was feeling so comfortable with him and was admiring his smooth, perfect skin that she spoke next without really thinking. “You don’t have bacne! Logan had bacne, it was sort of-” Shut up, stupid! She bit her tongue.
But the damage was done. Chad’s body stiffened and he grabbed a washcloth, pulling away from her. “Wow, and here I thought I was doing well not to let it slip what Rita and I did in the shower.”
The remark went straight to her gut but what hurt most was knowing she’d deserved it. “I’m sorry, that was stupid. I’ll just…” She started to step out of the shower.
“Wait.” Chad caught her around the waist and she looked up at him hopefully. “You still have conditioner in your hair.”
She deflated like a balloon. “Oh. Right.” She quickly rinsed it out without looking at him and made her escape again.
Chad rinsed off as she toweled herself dry and he stepped out after her a moment later. “Look, I understand. Exes are bound to pop up in conversation from time to time. I just don’t need to know what Huckleberry Hound looks like in the shower, okay?”
Still stinging from the remark about Rita, Mary Anne snapped, “Maybe you should stop calling him that.”
“Well, it’s hard to do with that accent of his. Feels like I stepped into Deliverance or something.”
“You’re right that exes are bound to come up in conversation. But have you ever noticed that I don’t make mean remarks about Rita? Unlike you, I respect the time you spent with your ex and I’m not going to make cheap shots at her expense.” Angrily, Mary Anne wrapped a towel around herself and spun off to the bedroom.
Chad followed. “Maybe that’s because Rita was never busted for possession of cocaine.”
“No, she just took up with your ex-partner.” Mary Anne was horrified to have said that but kept heading back to the bedroom without stopping.
Wide-eyed, Chad wrapped a towel around his waist as the two of them reached the bedroom and faced off. “Okay, so fine, you got me there. But now I really don’t care what she did, because if she hadn’t, I wouldn’t be with you!”
Rub it in, huh? She flinched, eyes tearing up. “That’s true.” She started scooping up her clothes. “You could still be with her.”
Chad watched her, confused. “What are you talking about?”
“Just… forget it. This is stupid, we have nothing to fight about.” She looked up at him and smiled a big, painful fake smile.
“No…” he walked up to her. “What did you mean by that?”
She muttered something.
“In a volume I can hear, if you don’t mind.”
Mary Anne cleared her throat. “You’re still in love with her.”
“W-Why do you think that?”
“Is that a serious question?” she snapped, giving him a look.
“Okay, fine. I’ll admit… that it’s been hard. She’s tough to get over, all right? But I don’t get why you’d say I could still be with her. She divorced me. She’s with Brett now.”
“You could’ve won her back. I could see that when I met them at the restaurant. There’s still something there.” She started to get dressed. “I don’t really feel like fighting, okay?”
Chad watched her quietly before finally speaking. “If I was trying to win her back, I wouldn’t be with you. I’ll admit I can be an ass, but not so big a one that I’d date one woman while trying to get my ex-wife back.”
Mary Anne straightened up, smoothing her dress. “You don’t need to explain yourself to me, Chad. I know what this is and that’s fine.”
She moved to leave but he grabbed her arm. “And what is this then? Were you just using me as your rebound? I thought this was more than that!”
Mary Anne blinked in surprise. “What?! I’m not the one who’s been treating someone like a rebound!”
“Is that what you think? That I’m just with you until I can get her back?”
“Well, you don’t respect me much, clearly!”
“Clearly?! When haven’t I respected you?!”
“Every time you bring up Logan’s drug use! You can’t respect someone who stayed with a cokehead for so long, can you?!”
“It’s him I don’t have any respect for, not you! I respect you because you left him! Do you know how many women I see come into the station to bail out their druggie boyfriends? And how they always shake their heads and say ‘I thought this time would be different, but here he is again.’ I’m proud of you for being stronger than them! To be able to walk away!”
There was a long silence as they stared at each other.
“You’re not a rebound, Chad,” Mary Anne whispered. “I’m sorry for making you feel that way.”
Chad released a deep sigh of relief. “And I’m sorry if I made you feel that way, too. You’re definitely not a rebound.”
She smiled shakily. “So um, I think we got our issues out. That’s nice and therapeutic, right?”
“Very much so.” He laughed, softly. “Cheaper and healthier than spilling our guts to a therapist.”
Mary Anne giggled at that then quickly sobered. “So, can I get a kiss before I leave?”
“Oh, you try and stop me.” He grabbed her roughly and pulled her into a knee-melting kiss. It took her a moment to realize he was backing her to the bed.
“Ch-Chad wait,” she said, when the bends of her knees hit the mattress. “I have to go, remember?”
His eyes glittered. “But then we’d miss the best part of fighting: The makeup sex.”
“Oh,” she breathed and was suddenly glad the bed was there to catch her when she sank backwards. Chad followed, the towel unraveling from around his waist. He kissed her deeply as he inched her skirt up around her middle with one hand, the other peeling off her underwear.
“Fighting gets you all worked up, sweetheart,” Chad murmured, discarding her underwear.
“No it doesn’t. I hate it.” She pouted to emphasize her point.
“Then why are you soaked through?” Chad asked, smirking.
“I think you might have a little something to do with that,” Mary Anne said, honestly. She watched in surprise as his features softened into a look of awe. “Chad?”
“Are you ready, sweetheart?” he whispered raggedly. “Because I can’t wait another second.”
She nodded, wrapping her arms around his back. “Yes, I’m ready.” She gasped when he thrust roughly into her and… oh. Oh, wow.
“I’m sorry,” he panted against her cheek. “I forgot the condom. I can still-”
“No,” she mewled, holding him close. “You’re so warm. Don’t leave.”
He kissed her throat and thrust into her gently. “I won’t, sweetheart. Promise.”
~*~
Dreamily, Mary Anne shut her apartment door behind her, already counting down the minutes until she could see Chad again.
“I’m thinking this is the walk of shame,” Dawn’s voice called from the living room. She had her textbooks strewn about her and raised her eyebrows. “You had your phone turned off all night.”
Embarrassed and a little chagrined, Mary Anne pulled her cellphone out of her purse. Yep, off. “I’m sorry; I should’ve called you to let you know where I was. I didn’t mean to worry-”
Dawn waved off the apology. “No, it’s okay, I figured you were with Chad. It’s just that because you turned your phone off, Logan called here twenty-two times.”
“Twenty-two?”
“Yeah. It was really creepy; I just turned the ringer off so I could get some sleep. Good thing you broke it off when you did; how long has he been this weird?”
“He’s never done anything like this before,” Mary Anne said, shakily.
“Well, if he does anything like it again, maybe you can talk to Chad about it.”
Mary Anne relaxed. “Chad. Right. Um, I have a paper to work on but maybe when I’m done with it, we can order something in for dinner?”
“Sounds good.”
With a soft sigh, Mary Anne went off to her room and booted up her laptop. She had the paper outlined and all of the research completed; all that was left was to write the thing.
Her cellphone made a beep. Text message. Worried, Mary Anne picked up her phone to check it.
Tomorrow. Or I come lookin for you. Love, C
A smile spread across her face and she curled up on her bed, already typing her response.

Promise.”

Date: 2007-01-01 01:09 pm (UTC)Happy New Year! And a new part to start off with.
The whistling while peeing made me think of Fez from That 70's Show. Dare I ask what Beatles tune it was? :-)
I don't want to think about what a strung out Logan will do, but if Chad gets to play hero, then... works for me.
