katsqueaks had to go and inspire me again. Maybe I can get my other fics written, too!
The First Supper
“Cap’n, I don’t think this is gonna work,” Kaylee said, worriedly.
“Sure it will, why wouldn’t it?” Mal set his jaw stubbornly.
“Because this table weren’t meant to hold seventeen people.”
Mal looked at the table crammed beyond capacity with unhappy crew and equally unhappy kids. There weren’t enough chairs so some of the older kids were standing and baby Anna was fussing and pulling at Simon’s hair.
“Okay, maybe the kids should eat over on the couches,” Mal conceded.
The parents looked at him doubtfully.
“Just the older ones,” he added.
Jamey, Lady, David, and Vee jumped up willingly and ran to the couch and chair where they started bouncing excitedly.
“Don’t you drop anything or I’ll whoop you,” Mal warned them.
Zoe, River, and Kaylee all glared at him.
“I’ll speak harshly?”
Glare.
“Reserve punishment for your parent’s discretion?” This seemed to placate the mommies and Mal muttered, “Who’s supposed to be the captain here, huh?”
Nettie tugged on Jayne’s sleeve. “I wanna eat with Jamey.”
“Little bit, just eat here, there’s enough room now.”
“But your elbow’s still in my protein.”
“Son of a- Fine, go on.”
After Ben made puppy eyes at Zoe, he was allowed to go to the couches too, the only child opting to stay being Nova, who smiled smugly to herself.
Dinner went on with pleasant conversation and Mal allowed himself to believe that everything was going to be fine when disaster struck.
Nettie had scooped up a heaping forkful of protein and was raising it to her mouth when the whole clump fell. River and Jayne were just glancing over and barely had time for their eyes to widen in horror when Ben Washburne’s hand shot out and caught it perfectly.
There was a moment of stunned surprise.
“I think Benjamin has your reflexes, dear,” Zoe said looking proud.
“Hey, give ‘em back,” Wash joked.
Ben dropped the food back on Nettie’s plate. And then wiped his dirty hand on the couch arm.
Mal cradled his head in his hands. “First thing we do on Beaumonde is go shopping for a bigger table.”

Date: 2006-07-16 05:24 am (UTC)Back when I was a junior in high school, I had no television experience. And I still don't. But still! I should've joined the cast of Firefly! I have no particular skill but I could've waved my arms and screamed "WE'RE ALL GONNA DIIIIIIIIIIIE!!" and laughed at Wash's jokes when no one else did. And "accidentally" walk in on Jayne in the shower!
Clackety clackety! *types madly*
