As it was in her life before nearly getting eaten by sea monsters, Kristy was the last one up and went out to the TARDIS control room to find The Doctor and Frey in a serious conference. The moment she entered the room, the two fell silent and a big beaming smile spread across Frey’s face.
“Morning,” Kristy said cautiously.
“Morning,” Frey chirped and hugged The Doctor around the waist excitedly. “Dad has something to ask you!”
"Don't spill the beans to her yet!” The Doctor ruffled Frey’s hair, making the boy giggle.
Kristy looked between the two of them in confusion, but laughed a little as Frey squealed quietly. "What's going on, you guys?"
The Doctor walked over to her, eyes shining and took her hand in his. "I think I've been a fool long enough. Will you marry me?"
Time seemed to stop and Kristy stared in shock up at the man she loved, unsure if she’d just heard him correctly. Over ten years she’d been with him (granted, they’d spent four years apart but they were going to do their damndest to make up for that) and the question of marriage had come up from time to time but the time never seemed to be right to actually go along with it. And now here he was asking her, not as a hypothetical, but really asking her.
During her musings, Frey stopped bouncing and started looking worried. The Doctor frowned too and waved a hand in front of Kristy’s eyes. "Umm, have I lost you somewhere?"
Blinking herself out of her stupor, she gave him a reassuring smile. "Sorry, you... surprised me." She wrapped her arms around him. "Yes. I'll marry you."
“Wooooooooot!” Frey pumped his fists in the air victoriously.
“Fantastic!” The Doctor planted a big kiss on her, chuckling as she giggled.
When they parted, Kristy took a moment to catch her breath and said dryly, “So we’ll have another bit of good news to go with telling my mom I haven’t died.”
“Right. We have to do that today,” The Doctor said and looked a little worried. “First your mother, then Mary Anne, then…?”
“We’ll figure out who’s next as we go along,” Kristy said and took a deep breath.

ONE YEAR PREVIOUSLY
Mary Anne Shelten hummed softly to herself as she pulled into the grocery store parking lot. Usually she went to one that was closer to her house but this store was having a sale on ground beef and she wanted to make burgers tonight for Chad. He’d been quietly suffering veggie dishes and seafood all week and she wanted to make it up to him. That infuriating man of hers just didn’t like eating healthy…
She picked out the hamburger meat then found the breakfast cereal the twins liked, Joshy’s favorite juice, a little toy for Snuggles the cat, and a magazine she didn’t normally read but had an actress she liked on the cover. None of this took too long since the store was so small and she was up at the front with her basket in the only lane open. She smiled at the eight year old boy in front of her, slurping a popsicle and clutching three dollars in his hand. That must’ve been his bicycle she’d seen out front chained to the bike rack. Chad would never allow the girls to ride their bike to the store; he’d have a fit and start citing statistics of children who go missing on a daily basis.
“Nobody fucking move, this is a robbery!!” A young man in a ski mask came in the door and the teenage girl at the till gave out a frightened shriek. He turned the gun on the girl. “Empty out the register! Now!”
Whimpering, the girl did as she was told as the gunman kept his weapon trained on her.
The child in front of Mary Anne started sniffling in fear. He was old enough to be one of her students, poor thing. She reached out her hand for the child and gently tugged him behind her.
The gunman whirled around, shaking. “I said nobody-“
BOOM
Looking down at her front in shock, she saw blood slowly spread out across her new blouse. Dammit. She’d just bought this the other day when she’d had shopping and lunch with Dawn, it wasn’t fair that-
She fell to the ground, feeling whoozy. She could hear people screaming, the gunman shouting, and the child popped up in her vision.
“Lady, are you okay?” he asked tearfully.
“Could you…” It was hard to talk and Mary Anne coughed a little. “Please… get my phone out of my bag?”
~*~
Chad dropped the finished paperwork into his out box and then picked up another folder from his inbox. He couldn’t wait until retirement. Not too much longer, now. Five more years.
His phone rang and he picked it up to his ear. “Shelten.”
"Hi, baby. I love you. I... I don't want to go but... you look out for our angels for me, okay?"
Chad frowned, wondering why she sounded so far away. "Wait, where are you going?"
"I'll miss you. You made me.... so happy..."
He jumped from his chair, heart pounding. "Sweetheart? What are you saying?"
"..... love you....." Her labored breathing continued for a moment and then abruptly stopped.
Sick dread pooled in his stomach and spread upwards. "Sweetheart? Mary Anne? Wha-- MARY ANNE?!"
"She's dead,” a scared little kid’s voice said and the call ended.
Chad realized he was shouting but didn’t know exactly what it was but started frantically dialing hospitals, all the hospitals in the area, demanding to know where his wife was. She wasn’t dead. She couldn’t be. She’d call back at any moment and tell him where she was so he could go to her and hold her and she’d tell him that everything was okay.
It wasn’t until Kevin showed up in his office, his usual cheerfully idiotic expression sober that he knew that this was very, very real.
Later, he felt numb the whole way to the morgue to identify Mary Anne’s body. Her body. He nodded dumbly and looked away when he saw her. She just looked like she was sleeping.
The rest of the day passed in a fog. He didn’t remember telling the kids what happened, Dawn probably did that, bless her heart.
He didn’t wake up until the gathering after the funeral. He sat as he usually did now, in his office staring at the wall, not seeing anything. He heard voices in the doorway but didn’t look up. But then he felt a light weight settling into his lap and he looked up to see Josh looking up at him, confused in a way only a two year old who has just lost his mother could be. Daisy was at his feet, head resting on his knee. Alma had her arm wrapped around his shoulders and lightly kissed the top of his head.
Daisy poked Josh’s knee. “Joshy.”
Josh blinked and then nodded at this little reminder and looked up at Chad with his big blue eyes. “I luff oo, Daddy.”
As if something had switched on inside of him, Chad’s face crumbled and he gathered his children close as he cried with them.

“Would you say her reaction was glad?” The Doctor asked, opening the TARDIS door and letting Kristy walk first onto the Shelten’s front lawn.
“Uh, rhymes with glad,” Kristy said, taking Frey’s hand and looking up at the house.
“She was glad to see you alive, though,” The Doctor pointed out, locking the TARDIS door. “At least you’re alive to get married, right?”
Kristy didn’t hear this as she stared worriedly up at the house. "It seems awfully quiet here, don't you think?"
The Doctor came up to her side and shrugged, unconcerned. "Well perhaps they made dinner plans."
She nodded in agreement but looked doubtful. "Let's knock on the door and if they're not here, we'll go to Dawn's."
They got up on the front porch and knocked on the front door. Worry started to worm its way into The Doctor’s heart when there was no pounding of childish footsteps to get to the door, no dog barking, no Chad grumbling, no Mary Anne calling reassuringly.
The door opened and Chad Shelten stood there, looking like a shadow of his former self. Frey recoiled a little and Kristy felt her insides twist. There was only one other time she’d seen Chad like this.
Chad blinked as he looked at Kristy. "Oh, uh, wow. We thought something had happened to you."
"Um, yeah, something did. Is Mary Anne around?” Kristy asked hopefully. “We won't stay long; I just need to talk to her." She figured her reappearance would rise above the old feud between Chad and The Doctor.
Chad stepped back, shaking his head. "No, she-- she's not..." He started to break down, tears coming to his eyes and his shoulders shaking.
“Chad?” Kristy came forward and held onto his arms. "Chad, what's the matter?"
“Mary Anne was killed,” he whispered, tears spilling.
Horror spread across Kristy’s face. “What? When did this happen?”
"A-Almost a year. She was just at the wrong place at the wrong time." He sniffed, wiping at his eyes. “Armed robbery at the grocery store. They were having a sale on beef and she was getting it for me.” The last syllable had so much self-loathing packed into it, it made Kristy flinch.
“It wasn’t your fault,” she said softly. “You didn’t know that-“
“Yeah,” Chad said shortly, having heard it before. “I need to check on my kids. Here, you can…” He walked into the kitchen and came back with a newspaper clipping that read “WIFE OF LAPD OFFICER KILLED IN GROCERY STORE ROBBERY.”
Kristy started to shake, looking at the article in her hand. "Oh god, the girls. This must be so hard for them…” She glanced back at Frey and saw him sobbing over his auntie Mary Anne. "Oh, baby boy, come here."
Chad watched Kristy hug her son tightly to her. "We-- we have a son now too. Josh. He just turned three."
“I’m so sorry, Chad.” Kristy cuddled Frey to her, rubbing her face against The Doctor’s hand as he gently cupped it, comforting her. “I wish there was something we could do.”
Chad nodded, having also heard this before and started to turn away before the import of her words sunk in and he spun back to face her. "Wait, can't you?!"
Kristy seemed surprised by the idea and looked up at The Doctor. “Can we?”
His eyes widened. “We really shouldn't try to change events in the timeline.”
"Remember what you went through when you thought you'd lost me?” she asked quietly.
They stared at each other a long moment before The Doctor sighed and took the newsclipping from Kristy’s hand. “Give me your cellphone, darling.”
Kristy and Chad looked at each other in confusion as Kristy handed her phone over.
The Doctor punched in a number and then waited a moment. “Mary Anne? Hello, this is The Doctor. No, Kristy’s fine. She’s off playing Intergalactic Softball at the moment. I’m calling because Buy and Save has sold out of the beef that’s on sale. Yes. I know, they just haven’t thought ahead, have they? You’re better off going to your regular grocery store. Yes, it really is an inconvenience but what can you do? All right. See you in a few then. Goodbye.” He hung up and looked at the gaping expressions on everyone’s faces.
“You were talking to Mary Anne?” Chad asked, voice hushed.
“Yes, I was. Give it a moment and the repercussions should start any minute now.”
They all waited for a flash of light or a loud POP noise but nothing happened. Then,
“Chad? Baby, who are you talking to?” Mary Anne came out of the office she and Chad shared and gasped in shock. “Kristy! You are okay! I never thought I’d see you again!” She ran over and hugged her stunned friend tightly and ran her fingers down Frey’s cheek. “Are you all staying for dinner?”
“If you’d have us, that would be lovely,” The Doctor said, sending Kristy a look telling her to act normally.
“Great!” Mary Anne turned and saw her husband staring at her as if he hadn’t seen her in years. “Chad? Why are you looking at me like that?”
“It’s just… I love you.” He pulled her into his arms and hugged her tightly, burying his face in her hair.
“Aww. I love you, too.” She hugged him back and tried to pull away but he wouldn’t quite relinquish his hold. She giggled and continued to hug him.
Kristy gently kissed The Doctor’s cheek. “I know that went against everything you stand for, but thank you for doing it.”
“I knew how he felt,” The Doctor said, softly. “It hurts losing the love of your life.” He pressed his forehead to her temple, glad that she was there.
~*~
Mary Anne stood up, starting to clear some of the dishes. “I’ll just get these out of the way and we can have dessert.”
Kristy stood up. “I’ll help.”
“No, sit down, I got it.” Mary Anne smiled. “You got torn up by huge sea monsters; the least I can do for you is wash your plate.”
Kristy started to respond but happy shouts from the yard caught her attention. Because it was such a nice evening, they’d eaten out on the deck and now Frey, the twins, and Josh were running around the yard. Josh had taken a shine to Frey and trailed after him, fascinated by the bigger boy.
“I’ll help with the dishes, Mommy!” Daisy ran up the steps and followed Mary Anne inside, leaving the other children to continue their game with one less person.
Chad coughed a little and looked from Kristy to The Doctor. “I know that I’m not the easiest guy to get along with. But… thank you for doing that. I can’t… I wasn’t getting along well without her. Thank you for giving her back to me.”
“We love her, too,” Kristy pointed out but then saw the look on Chad’s face and saw what he was trying to do here. “You’re welcome. Glad to be of help.”
He nodded, trying not to lose his composure for the second time that day. Moved by his attempt, Kristy got up from her chair and hugged him for the first time in twelve years. After stiffening in surprise, Chad relaxed and hugged her back.
When they’d pulled apart, Chad looked at The Doctor. “You guys need a place to stay the night?”
And just like that, the rift between all of them healed and everyone smiled, feeling a little lighter.

Months later, the entire Babysitters Club and friends they found along the way gathered in the Brewer-Thomas backyard. Claudia’s little daughter Grace led the way down the red carpeted aisle dropping flower petals as she went, looking to her father for approval. He beamed at her gave her a thumbs up, mumbling “Yarrr” under his breath.
Then came the bridesmaids: Karen, Stacey, Claudia, and Dawn followed by Mary Anne the matron of honor and Frey the best man. A confused Josh was the ring bearer and had to be coaxed by his mother to stand where he was supposed to. Finally, his dad had to get up and stand with him, making the wedding party and guests laugh.
Finally, it was Kristy’s turn down the aisle, on the arm of her oldest brother Charlie.
“You can still back out,” he said through smiling teeth. He hissed a swear when Kristy pinched him that Shannon Kilbourne heard as they passed her and she snorted her amusement.
Then the moment that they’d all been waiting for was upon them: Kristy and her Doctor exchanged their vows, practically glowing as they couldn’t take their eyes off one another.
“You may now share your first kiss as a married couple,” the preacher said.
Eagerly, The Doctor lifted Kristy’s veil and kissed her passionately as everyone burst into applause.
Dashing to the TARDIS after kissing Frey goodbye, she looked at the big sign on the front that Claudia had painted which said “Just Married” and not for the first time thanked her lucky stars that thirteen years ago, she’d taken a study break at the exact right moment so she could meet this amazing man.
The Doctor shut the door and gathered her into his arms. “Where to?” he asked, happy to be alone with her at last.
“Anywhere,” she said.
“All right.” He grinned and went to the controls, still holding her by the hand. “Anywhere it is.”
THE END

To the... four people who read this (lol) thank you for doing so! It's been fun writing and I think this may be my last foray into the BSC crack verse. I now pass the reins to Nutmeg for our next story, Stacey Loves The Invisible Man which will cross the BSC with Heroes. Christopher Eccleston's character to be exact. Watch for it sometime soon at
gorramit_girl! Seriously, if there was ONE story not to blow off in this series, it'd be this one. (I think I always like the stories that I don't have to compile best.) Happy reading!

To the... four people who read this (lol) thank you for doing so!

Date: 2007-08-18 07:09 am (UTC)Ooh, and then you could use a Lost character, too! (Now I'm just getting silly. Still, I liked Jewish Abby and Shannon was interesting, and I did read the Little Sister books about Karen.)

Date: 2007-08-18 11:07 pm (UTC)As soon as Nutmeg's done with the Stacey story, I'm going to start on Claudia and Steve's story. The cover's set, the first three chapters are planned out and... we're all officialy insane.
P.S. I really don't care about Abby and Shannon. But okay, for your sake, let's say Shannon marries Wilson from House. The overachiever landed a doctor. Yay! :)
