Chapter Fifteen - The Memory Machine

I haven't heard from Kristy lately. Do you think something happened out there? No, I can't think that. But still... I should call Mary Anne and see if she's heard anything. I'm really worried.

- email from Mallory Pike to Jessi Ramsey

"Now, we simply put this on your head..."

"Yeah, that doesn't look clunky or anything."

The Doctor smiled and put what looked like a virtual reality headset on Kristy's head. "Now, we plug it in-"

"In where?" Kristy asked, sounding worried.

"It won't hurt."

"In where??"

She felt a slight pop inside her head and then the screen turned static-y. It went clear a moment later. < Welcome, Kristy Thomas. We are downloading your memories right now. Please wait a moment. >

"Is it talking to me?"

"It should be. I'll just be in the other room."

"But what if I need your help?"

"You won't. Memories are a private thing so I'll just leave you be."

He shut the door quietly on his way out.

~*~

Kristy emerged forty-five minutes later, face wet with tears. The Doctor hurried to her side and wrapped an arm around her neck. "Are you alright, darling?"

"I'm fine. It- it was like watching a movie. That day with my dad was one of the best days of my life." She sniffled and smiled at him apologetically. "It's your turn."

"Yes. Right."

"What are you going to remember?"

"I have a few things in mind."

~*~

Kristy was napping when the bedroom door flew open, slamming against the wall. She sat up in surprise to find The Doctor stalking towards her predatorily.

"What are you-" He silenced her with a hot, wet kiss. "What was that for?"

"I got to see what our first time was like," he said silkily and pushed her onto her back, climbing over her. "That was appalling. And I'm going to make it up to you. RIght." He kissed her neck. "Now."

She shivered. "You don't need to. Our first time was-"

"Terrible," he finished. "I drooled all over your neck and I didn't last nearly as long as I should have."

"But I liked it," she protested as he unbuttoned her shirt. "I thought you were amazing."

"Amazing?" He undid her bra and left a series of kisses between her breasts and down her chest to her tummy, his favorite area, and started leaving nipping kisses, growling a little. "I want to give you mind-blowingly fantastic."

She squeaked as he made quick work of her jeans and underpants and then his mouth was between her legs. "Okay," she cooed, hands in his hair. "I'm not mmmmmm gonna complaiiiin..."

~*~

Six orgasms later, Kristy could hardly move. She didn't even have the energy to pull him on top of her. ".... can't......... move."

"Unnghh..." He agreed, sprawled next to her.

"What...... was.......... that?"

"I think... it's referred to... as sex."

"That........ was waaaay.... more..... than mere sex."

"Uh huh."

"Blacked out a little."

"Ooo, sorry about that."

"Felt good though." She grinned lazily, stretching like a wild cat. "Never blacked out before."

The Doctor managed to find the energy to turn his head and watch her move against the mussed sheets. "Mmm, that my dear, is what sex with a Time Lord will do to you."

"Yeah, your super jizz managed to make me pregnant that one time." She lightly touched her tummy. "What if it happened again?"

"That'd be nice... wouldn't it?"

"Would it?" She turned her head to look at him curiously.

"I think it would be."

"You'd want a girl next? Little Time Lady?"

"Sure," The Doctor agreed, picturing in his mind a little girl with Kristy's smile, his freckles, their brown eyes...

"I think Frey was a once in a lifetime deal, though. No more." Kristy shrugged a little. There was no way they could be so lucky twice.

"He's pretty special." The Doctor's thoughts turned to their son, now six years old. The boy was now taking electronic doo dads apart and putting them back together, making the machines work better than they had before. That kind of skill would come in handy the next time the TARDIS broke down.

"He's amazing. I wanna be like him when I grow up," Kristy said, making him chuckle. She gently teased, "I used to wanna be like you but he's just waaaaay cooler."

"Well, I couldn't allow your loyalties to go to a lesser young man."

She laughed. "Allow?"

"Well..." he paused, considering his free-spirited, independent companion. "Not really, but it sounded good."

Catching her breath, Kristy turned serious. "What would you do if I left you?"

"Bring you back and ask you why," he said, equally as serious.

Kristy thought for a moment. "What if it was because I didn't want to travel anymore?"

"You think you'd feel that way someday?" he asked carefully, hoping she wasn't feeling that way right now.

"I'm not going to be all young and firm forever." She slapped her tummy as if to illustrate her point. "Maybe one day I'll be all tired."

"I'm 900, and I'm not tired of it yet."

She smiled sadly. "Yeah, but once you get too tired, you get a new body and you're good to go again. I'm not that lucky."

"That's true," he said, silently pondering.

"So when that day comes, what are you going to do?" she asked. When he was quiet in response, she said gently, "It'll be okay to leave me behind. I'll miss you but... little old lady fighting aliens? No."

"It's not that, it's just... I can't get a normal job and take care of you, and... suburbia..." He shuddered. "I'm not human, and I'm not sure I could be happy living like one. I have to be myself."

"I understand that. That's why I'm saying... when I can't do this anymore, I'll leave and I'm not going to try to talk you into a life you can't lead. It's okay," Kristy said earnestly. "I've given this a lot of thought ever since Frey was born. You'll have him to keep you company and make sure you stay out of trouble."

"But I won't have you..."

"I know. But you could visit me, maybe? I'll be in some retirement community with Mary Anne playing canasta or something."

He laughed sadly. "I'll visit all the time. I'll go back in time so it's everyday to you."

Reaching out, she took his hand and linked their fingers together. "That sounds lovely."

"It will be." He rolled on top of her, ready to perform his duties as boy blanket, and kissed her tenderly.

She kissed back, stroking his hair. "That's a long way off, though. I'm only 31, after all."

"Mmm, right you are." He rested his head on the pillow next to hers. "Goodnight, darling dearheart."

"'Night, pretty," she whispered in his ear.

~*~

The next morning they landed on a planet that was mostly water. The only civilization was a city much like New York, busy and bustling. The main trade was tours out into the ocean in glass-bottom boats to see all the sea-monsters. People could rent them out for the day and operate the boats themselves without a need for a guide.

Of course, the instant they landed, they got swept up in local turmoil that The Doctor had to get to the bottom of and put right. Bored out of his skull, Frey kept looking around at the posters advertising the monster cruises eagerly.

"Mummy, look! Can we go?!" Frey tugged Kristy's hand, pointing at one of the posters.

Kristy sighed. Though their son had Time Lord intelligence, he could still act like a child. That was a bit of a relief but at the same time a little annoying. Like right now. "Doctor, do you mind if we go on ahead without you? Frey's kind of..."

The Doctor turned away from the chancellor, looking down at the squirmy six year old. "Sure. Just remember to be--"

"EEEEEEEEEEE!!" With that word of affirmation, Frey took off at a mad fast clip, forcing Kristy to follow after him.

"Careful," The Doctor finished with a sigh.

Finally catching up to Frey, Kristy scooped him up. "We need to say goodbye to Daddy."

"Bye Daddy!!" Frey enthused, wriggling in her arms.

The Doctor waved at him. "Bye Frey!" He looked to Kristy. "I mean it, okay? Be careful."

Kristy came back to him and gave him a soft, clinging kiss, ignoring Frey's sigh of exasperation at the hold up this was causing. "I promise I will."

Nodding, The Doctor said, "Have fun, darling."

She set Frey on his feet and took his hand. Giving The Doctor a playful pout she said, "Without you? Yeah right."

The Doctor watched them go and then turned reluctantly back to the chancellor. "Alright. What does the charter say?"

~*~

The Doctor and the chancellor were both practically choking on dust as they turned the moldy pages of the charter. The Doctor peered at the tiny, ancient writing through his thick framed glasses. "Right, well-"

"Hey, did you hear the news?" A page entered the room, looking excited. "One of those sea monster boats are going down! Some woman and her kid are in trouble. The monsters are in such a frenzy that rescue can't get in!"

Hearts pounding, The Doctor stood up, knocking over his chair in the process and bolted from the room.

"Geez," the page said, taken aback. "Some people are real gore hounds, aren't they?"

~*~

It was like a nightmare. Like a horrible, horrible nightmare. They'd gotten so far out that the land was long gone, not even a speck on the horizon. That'd been fine, albeit unsettling. But then the electricity gave out and it was no longer zapping the sea creatures, keeping them at bay. Now they'd been ramming the glass for the last five minutes and water was seeping into the boat at an alarming rate.

"It's okay, Frey, we're fine, we're fine." Kristy reassured her crying son, though she felt like crying herself. It was bad enough to be in this situation, but to be in it with her child...

Frey looked up to the sky and pointed. "Look! It's Daddy!"

The TARDIS came soaring towards them and hovered a little over them. Relief filled her heart; he'd come. They'd be okay. The door opened and The Doctor held out his hand. "C'mon!"

At that moment, the glass at the bottom of the boat finally shattered and the boat sank drastically, making Frey scream in fright.

Kristy picked him up and held him out to The Doctor. "Here! Take him!"

The Doctor grabbed Frey and set him safely inside. Then he reached his hand out again. "Kristy!"

God, what a relief. She reached out for The Doctor's hand and just brushed his fingers when something wrapped around her ankle and tugged her forcefully under the water. It happened so fast she couldn't even take a quick breath of air before going under.

~*~

"KRISTY!" The Doctor screamed, watching the waves for her to resurface. From behind him, he could hear Frey crying. Her hand finally popped up out of the water, reaching frantically for him before getting abruptly sucked back under. The water immediately around where the hand had been went red. The Doctor felt his stomach twist and he glanced over his shoulder, hoping Frey hadn't seen that.

He hadn't. His son had run off to his room and was now coming back with a long rope. "Let's lower this!"

The Doctor took it and lowered it into the water, tying the end to the door. "Stand back, son!" He started to strip off his jacket, intent on diving in after her.

"What are you doing?" Frey asked tearfully.

Stopping, The Doctor stared at his son. He couldn't leave him. "I-- I was just..."

Again, Frey ran away and came back moments later, this time with a butterfly net. "Use this to save her while you're down there!"

For an agonizing moment, The Doctor didn't know what to do: Leave his son or his love to the mercy of the sea creatures?

Luckily, he didn't have to make that decision because Kristy fought her way to the surface, gasping and choking.

"Grab the rope!" he called to her, getting down on his knees to prepare himself for pulling her up.

Kristy swam in a pained fashion to the rope and barely had a grasp on it before getting sucked under again.

"Go after her!" Frey screamed, giving The Doctor a violent shove.

The Doctor was getting set to jump when Kristy popped up again. "Get... him... out of-" She went down again but came up soon after. "Get him... gone."

He reached down to her. "I can't leave you!"

"Promise me... you'll take care of him?" Her teeth chattered, her lips a horrifying shade of blue.

Tears fell down The Doctor's face. "I promise... but I'm not leaving you to die."

The light in her eyes went out and it was without a fight that she went down again. The Doctor watched the water frantically for her to resurface but only a bloody, torn t-shirt floated up.

He sat back in shock, hardly believing what just happened. She was gone. Forever. His darling dearheart...

Suddenly, a flailing tentacle came flying up, groping blindly for them. The Doctor shoved Frey back and slammed the doors shut.

"Where is she? We have to save her!" Frey exclaimed, tears coursing down his face.

The Doctor stared at the door, numb. "It's-- She's... gone, son. She's gone now."

"But! She was right there! She... she should've grabbed the rope!"

"I know. But she was so tired, and..." he trailed off, closing his eyes in grief.

Frey pressed his face into his hands, weeping. "I want my mummy..."

Pushing his own need for mourning to the side for the moment, The Doctor gathered Frey up into his arms and hugged him tightly. "I know. I know you do. So do I."

~*~

It had taken hours for The Doctor to put his son to bed. The boy hadn't wanted to let his father out of his sight and so The Doctor had stayed sitting on the edge of the bed until Frey had fallen asleep.

Now he stood staring at the memory machine, hands in his pockets. Finally, he picked it up and switched it on.

< Welcome, back, Doctor. Which memory would you like to re-live today? >

~*~

"There's security measures. Robots with lasers. We'll be fine," he promised her.

Kristy looked uneasily up at the ceiling/window. "What about those satellite spy cams they have out in space? I don't need some kid in Idaho zooming in on my boobs."

"It's two-way glass, darling. The only one who gets to zoom in on your boobs is me." He sat on the bed, hoping she would undress eventually. Though the dress was lovely. A sparkly, long floor-length black gown that dipped low in the front and fastened with a silver chain around her neck, exposing her back. He'd been drooling the moment she'd stepped out of their bedroom at home and never had he been more itchy to get her unclothed.

"Oh! Well... okay. But I'm trusting your word on this, so you'd better be right." She scowled teasingly at him.

The Doctor held up the brochure. "100% right, darling."

Always curious, Kristy took the brochure out of his hands and started flipping through it. "Wow, check out the gym! I'm going to have to go there later. And the pool looks nice..."

"Uh huh... later."

She nodded, still looking through it. "Yeah, that's what I said. Later. Ooooooh, dinner looks awesome! The entertainment doesn't look too bad either..."

"Darling..."

"Pretty?"

"Well... the bed certainly doesn't look too bad, but we might have to test it to be sure." The Doctor grinned when that made her look up.

Tossing the brochure aside, she said, "Can't trust the written word for that. We'll just have to conduct experiments on it."

"Oh yes, you're a smart one." He grinned cheekily and bounced a little bit.

"Like... how long can we love on this before we crack this headboard?" Kristy hopped on the bed and knocked on the headboard in question.

"Oooo, well if that happens we'd better vacate quick, because I don't have any money to pay for a replacement."

She sighed heavily. "I guess it'll have to be on me, then. Or we'll work it off spending the rest of our lives here."

"Nah, we have places to go, things to see."

"Yeah... But I don't think I'd mind staying in one place for awhile." Suddenly shy, she looked down and then back up at him. "As long as you were with me."

He grinned and got on the bed beside her, charmed by how pink her cheeks were. "Well that part's understood."

She lay down slowly and he arranged himself on top of her, staring down into her face. "If you don't have the money to replace a headboard, how are you paying for this room?"

Gently, he traced her bottom lip with his thumb. "Someone owed me a favor. Saved their life, you see."

"Ah. Considering you've saved bajillions of lives, you must live on calling in favors." With a big smile, she shifted around to get comfortable and made sure to brush her breasts against his chest.

"Maybe I do." He was starting to ache, he needed her so badly.

"Do I owe you a favor?" She opened her eyes wide, making her look so sweetly innocent, he had to bend his head and brush a kiss softly across her lips.

"Possibly... there has been a bit of life-saving on my end." He watched as she reached behind her neck and unhooked the silver chain, shivering a little as she slowly lowered the dress and exposed herself to him.

"You won't ever need to call in a favor with me; I'll just help you." She smiled softly, helping her push the dress completely off. Smart girl hadn't worn any underwear...

"Lucky me," he breathed, rising up on his knees to hastily discard his jacket and shirt.

"Lucky me." Reaching up, she stroked his hair gently. "Thank you for saving my life."

He smiled, unzipping his pants and getting them out of the way so he could nestle down between her thighs. "You're welcome. Thank you for making mine worth living."

"It's an honor," she said seriously. "You're welcome."

< You share a memory with Kristy Thomas. Would you like to view this memory from Kristy Thomas's perspective? >

"Yes."

The first thing he noticed was how handsome he was. Which would normally sound terribly ego-centric but there it was. His rather long nose and his strange eyelid were smoothed over in her mind; she saw him as impossibly, improbably handsome.

The next thing he noticed was how much love was pooling inside of her. She felt so much that sometimes she wanted to weep from the power of it. Like right now, just as he was entering her. He was going so slowly and so gently and she'd been handled so roughly in the past. It moved her to be treated in so cherished a fashion.

He kept his strokes slow and even, unaware of the adoration she was feeling towards him.

Kristy looked up through the window/ceiling of the moon hotel, staring up at the stars, hardly seeing them as she made love to him. "Sh-should we roll over? You should be able to see the stars, too."

"I already am seeing them." He had his eyes shut tight, lost in the sensation.

Instead of feeling annoyance, the love inside her intensified. "Roll over, pretty."

He did so after two more strokes and then she was riding him. "Look at the stars, Doctor."

"I am," he said, gravelly. "I'm looking at the brightest star there is."

She started moving faster, breath catching in her throat. "I love you so much, my pretty Time Lord boy."

"I'll love you until eternity, my darling dearheart."

That was all it took and she shattered, falling and taking him with her as she went.

He held her tightly as she came back to herself, trembling. "Thank you for taking me here, pretty."

"Thank you for coming with me," he answered.

She nuzzled his temple and whispered in his ear, "I'd follow you anywhere."

The Doctor removed the memory machine from his head and finally allowed himself to sob uncontrollably.
