Day Seven - Sunday
Mary Anne stirred and stretched, yawning widely. They’d been driving all night and glancing over at Chad, it looked like it was taking a toll on him.
"Morning. Want me to take over for you?"
Chad seemed surprised she was awake and nodded, yawning. "Sure, next gas station you can."
Smiling sympathetically, Mary Anne reached out and gently stroked his hair. He returned her smile, albeit a little sadly. "How'd you sleep?"
“Okay.” She sat up a little more and rubbed her eyes.
"That's good."
For a moment, she studied him before gently asking, “Are you okay?”
"Yeah."
"Do you wanna talk about anything?"
"Like what?"
"You've been holding in a lot for awhile now. You pick."
Chad took a deep breath. They had to address this sometime. "Guess you should probably know what I did."
"I guess so. Since I'm on the run with you now, too."
"Well... I did a few things. I guess I should give you some backstory first. I was a police officer in L.A." He looked at her and she nodded, quietly listening. "And I... forged some evidence against my former partner in a murder case... because someone was holding another crime over my head."
"Another crime?" she gently prompted him.
"Yeah, I helped my... wife at the time..." He cleared his throat uncomfortably but Mary Anne had already guessed he’d been married and simply waited for him to continue. "She killed her father in self defense but her brother was convinced they'd go to jail, so I helped her hide the body."
Holy shit, any second now she's gonna say, “Stop the car; I'm getting out.”
Instead, she looked concerned. “Self defense? Was he abusive?”
"Yeah, he was beating on her brother."
"Oh, how awful. And someone found out about this and used it against you." She looked mad as hell by the very idea. "What a horrible thing to do."
Chad gave her a look. "You don't think I'm horrible?"
“You?” She seemed surprised by the notion. “Well, I suppose you could've acted differently. Since it was self defense, your wife could've stood a chance in court but... no, I don't think you're horrible Dan- Chad."
His hands started shaking where they clutched the steering wheel from a combination of fierce relief and complete exhaustion. He could hear the click of Mary Anne’s seatbelt and she slid across the seat to leave kisses along the side of his face.
"Poor baby..." She whispered in his ear.
He wrapped an arm around her, pulling her close to his side. "Yeah, life hasn't been so hot this last year, until very recently."
"We'll have to work on making things better." She dropped a kiss on his chin, his throat. "We're all each other has now."
"Mmm hmm." Chad squeezed her shoulder as she started stroking his hair again, the motion soothing and making him a little bit sleepy.
Mary Anne kissed his ear softly. "I love you, Chad."
Chad looked at her, face dead serious. "And I love you."
Sighing happily, Mary Anne kissed his cheek then settled back into her seat. She looked ahead at the road and helped him look out for a gas station, one hundred percent certain she’d made the right decision in coming with him.
