PARTS
“P-please Mr. Cobb,” Niska begged, on his knees and hands held up in surrender. “Perhaps we can come to an agreement, yes?”
Jayne scowled and thumbed back Donna’s safety. “Don’t think so.”
“I will do anything!”
“Anything, huh? Well, how ‘bout--” Suddenly, a huge sea bird swooped in through the opened window of the office and started pecking at Jayne’s forehead, right between the eyes. “Gorram it, call your bird off!”
“It is not mine!”
“Wake up!” the bird demanded. “Jayne’s assistance is required!”
“Huh?”
“Up! Up!”
Blinking rapidly, Jayne took in the sight of his entirely too bright bunk with sleep-fogged eyes. The tapping on his forehead started again and swift as a striking snake, he reached out and grabbed a narrow wrist clutching a hairbrush.
His girl’s upside down face filled his field of vision. “Hello. I need your help.”
“Bao bei, I was in the middle of a good dream,” Jayne whined, releasing her wrist and sitting up. “I was a big shot ‘n ‘bout to get myself some shiny payback.”
River tilted her head to the side. “Can’t live in dreams. I’ve learned this.”
“Yeah, well, I like ‘em anyway,” he muttered and rubbed sleep from his eyes. “Whattya need?”
“You assistance.”
“I got that. With what?”
She handed him her hairbrush and ducked her head, pointing to it. “My part is crooked; it makes many crooked parts.”
Up until now, she always had her brother brush her hair and he smiled at how she was now trusting him with this important task.
“Yeah?” he said lightly and ran a hand over her head affectionately, crooked parts and all. “What do you think mirrors are for? You can do it yourself, can’t you?”
“Mirrors lie,” River said solemnly. “You hold up your left hand and your image holds up its right. There’s a reason mirrors are so often used in illusions.”
Jayne shook his head, smiling over her logic that always made a slightly weird kind of sense. “Yeah, they’re pretty tricky. Guess I’ll part your hair for ya since it means so much to ya.”
“Thank you.” She was quiet as he ran the brush through her hair, sorting the separate sections. “Can’t keep anything else straight.”
“What’s that?” he asked, frowning as he worked.
“I’m easily confused,” River explained in a sad little voice. “Everything’s crooked in my mind, memories hung on the wall in a hurry so they all tilt left and right. At least my part can be straight. Like a normal girl.”
Jayne’s frown deepened and he finished with her hair after changing one detail. “You’re sayin’ all that like it’s bad to be a little different. In case you didn’t notice, the whole gorram crew’s pretty weird. It’s like Mal set out to find the scrapin’s at the bottom o’ society’s barrel.”
River sat up and ran a hand over the top of her head. The results didn’t please her and she shot him a betrayed look. “I feel parts. Plural. I told you I wanted it straight.”
Jayne cupped her chin in his hand, meeting her eyes seriously. “You can pretend not to be crooked all ya want but it won’t change anything. You’re bent, girl.” He traced the two different zig-zagging parts he’d left in her hair with reverent fingertips. “And I like ya that way.”
The hurt slowly melted from River’s face and she managed a watery smile. “You’re a silly man.”
Laughing, Jayne tugged her into his lap and buried his face in that sweet-smelling, freshly brushed hair of hers. “Yeah, I know. Lucky I got me a silly girl to keep me company.”
A giggle was her only response and that was fine by him.

Date: 2008-07-27 11:11 pm (UTC)Both Jayne and River are very much in character, and I really loved how you portrayed both of them in this. The albatross in Jayne's dream was a very nice touch and River's line about the mirror was absolutely inspired.
I'd really love to read more from you! Great job!
