- An IM chat between Mary Anne Shelten and Claudia Kishi

Claudia stared at the phone, willing it to ring. Instead, it sat silent on the desk, mocking her. Sighing, she went back on the computer, annoyed that her boss had made sure to block MySpace, LiveJournal, and Amazon since they were “distracters.” Gee, it sure would be the end of the world if she checked her friends list or shopped for some more art supplies and managed to miss the whole lot of nothing going on.

Just as she was getting ready to start chewing her arm, the front door open and in walked one of her favorite patrons.

Claudia’s face lit up. “Kara!” She came around the desk and ran to the smiling woman who’d just come in the door and threw her arms around her. “You’re back in town!”

“Like I’d miss your show, Claudia!” Kara hugged back warmly. “How are you, sweetie?”

“Oh, I’m good! What about you, how’s your writing coming along?” Kara was a world renowned author who split the year between her native New Zealand and the States, particularly New York.

“I’m a bit blocked, actually,” Kara admitted but quickly added when she saw Claudia’s look of concern, “Nothing I’ve never experienced before, don’t worry. So! Are you excited Miss I’m-Having-My-First-Major-Art-Show-In-Three-Weeks?”

Grinning, Claudia nodded. “Yes. I’ve got some other good news, too: I’ve been offered a job.”

Kara gasped, face joyful. “That’s wonderful! It has to do with art, right?”

“Yeah, sort of.” Claudia went back behind the counter and took her seat in case her supervisor saw her socializing and decided to pitch a fit. Again. “I’m redesigning the logo for Joe’s Gym.”

“Joe’s Gym?” Kara raised her eyebrows. “I know the manager, Steve O’Brien!”

“You do?” Claudia’s jaw dropped. “How?”

“He lives in my building. And also, I go to the gym when I can. It’s such a friendly place, isn’t it? Have you been there, yet?”

“Yeah, I have. So… so you know what a total whackjob he is?”

Kara’s customary smile faded. “Whackjob?”

“He… he pretends to be a pirate.” Claudia wondered if she’d wandered into the Twilight Zone yet again. Fake pirates were weird; did anyone miss the memo?

“I guess it’s strange,” Kara said though it was clear she felt otherwise. “But he’s a really nice guy, Claudia. Everyone loves him.”

“Well, I don’t,” Claudia muttered, feeling cranky all of a sudden.

Kara looked like she was going to argue but right then the door opened again and in walked Bertram Cadence. Everything in the room went out of focus and all Claudia could see was him. His six foot three frame, his sexy ponytail, his goatee, his thoughtful expression where she knew that behind his eyes, he was envisioning masterpieces.

Bertram was the gallery’s most celebrated artist. And Claudia wanted to lick him all over.

“Hi, Bertram!” she called a little too loudly.

He didn’t look put out by her greeting but just nodded at her. “Katie.” He continued on into the back and the room came into focus once more.

“Katie?” Kara repeated, raising her eyebrows.

Claudia blushed. “He’s bad with names.” The phone rang and she quickly picked it up, happy for a distraction. “Bell Gallery, this is Claudia. How may I help you?”

“Yaaaaarrr, Claudia! It be Steve! The pirate!”

Yeah, because she needed this shit now. “Oh… yeah.”

“Look, I was figurin’ that maybe since we’re sort of workin’ together, we could have a friendly dinner sometime soon? Maybe later this week?”

“Ohhhh, I think,” she ruffled the pages of one of the free newsletters on the counter so it sounded like she was leafing through her schedule book, “Yeah-- I’m booked solid.”

“Oh.” His voice sounded normal when he was disappointed. “Right, yeah. You would be.” He cleared his throat. “Maybe some other time, then. Sorry. Bye.” Without waiting for her to say anything else, he hung up.

I have just averted a disaster, Claudia thought as she put the phone back on the hook.

“Who was that?” Kara asked curiously.

Knowing that Kara, like Stacey, was an unexpected Steve Cheerleader, she knew she couldn’t tell the truth. “No one. Want to see a sample of my show?”

“Sure!” Claudia led the way into the back, leaving the front desk to deal with itself.
