mystic_notions at my request post I made a million years ago. Sorry this took so long to write! I just couldn't get my ass in gear. Also, this takes place in the Songs from a Firefly verse. And in case you forgot who all these damn kids are, here's the Meet the Characters post I made. Whew, longest notes ever! (Late night post, heh.)

“Hey, Cap?”
Mal looked up from making his meager breakfast and smiled at little Anna Tam. “Hey there, darlin’!”
The little girl came over and tugged on his pant leg. “I have somethin’ important ta show ya!”
“Well, I’m a little busy right now.”
“You’re buttering toast, Cap.”
He frowned at the disrespectful tone of her voice. The girl was sounding more and more like her mama every day with that kind of sass. “And I’ll have you know that this toast is part of my breakfast and breakfast, little one, is the most important meal of the-”
“Come on!” Anna grabbed his hand and yanked him to the door. “The toast can come, too.”
Bemused, Mal allowed the little person to lead him, nibbling his toast as he went. Better be important, I’m a busy man.
“SURPRISE!” The youthful shouts from down in the cargo bay made him jump so he nearly dropped his toast off the catwalk.
“What the hell’s this?” he called down.
A big cake sat on a little card table someone must’ve dragged out and Simon, Jayne and Wash were standing around with the kids, all of them wearing pointy party hats o their heads. Except Wash who had his on like a unicorn and David Tam who had two like devil horns.
“Cantcha read?” Jayne asked and pointed to the banner one of the walls that said HAPPY FATHER’S DAY.
“I’m included in this?” Mal asked, sounding amazed.
Anna hugged him around the waist. “Of course. You’re the ship daddy.”
Moved, Mal wrapped his arm around her shoulders and hugged her back.
“Come on down, Cap!” Vee Washburne shouted. “We’re playin’ games all day!”
“All day?” Mal repeated as he walked down the stairs. “When there’s work to be done?”
Nettie Cobb pouted prettily. “Not on Father’s Day.”
“Just teasin’, Nettie bird.” He gave her a playful wink and she blushed. “So what games are we gonna play?”
“Fun ones,” Lady Washburne assured him. “But first here’s your card.” She handed him one with an impressive sketching of his own brown coat on the front. Inside it said “Happy Father’s Day Oh Captain our Captain Daddy!”
“All the daddies got one,” Anna said, pointing to the table where the other cards were. Jayne’s had two guns crossed on the front with the names “Nettie” and “Jamey” engraved on the handles, Wash’s had a friendly looking T-rex wearing a Hawaiian shirt, and Simon’s had a heart wearing a stethoscope.
“This is nice.” He read all the kids’ names inside his card, already looking forward to hanging it up in his room.
“We had David draw ‘em,” Vee explained.
Mal was about to thank David when Jayne interrupted him. “Are we gonna eat that cake now or what?”
Nettie looked up at him reproachfully. “Not until we play games first.”
“Awww.” Jayne pouted.
“I want cake, too,” Wash agreed, nudging a frowning Lady with his elbow.
Anna looked up at Mal seriously. “What do you wanna do, Cap?”
Mal looked from the banner to the cake then down to the card in his hand. “Honestly, I don’t care,” he said but that earned him dirty looks from all the girls. “But let’s play games, he added quickly.
The kids cheered and Jamey and Lady got to work setting up Nova’s croquet set.
“Hey is that toast?” Jayne asked, eyeing Mal’s forgotten breakfast with interest.
“Yes,” Mal said flatly.
“Are you gonna-”
“Just take it.”
“Shiny!”

Date: 2007-08-30 03:02 pm (UTC)You have perfect timing cause I really needed something sweet and fluffy this morning. Man I love these kids and their Serenity family. Thank you.
Nettie is still crushing hard on Cap I see. It makes me want to hug her and make sure no one teases her about her blushing. And I can totally see Nova having a croquet set. I can see her giving instructions on how to play and going over the rules with Jayne a few times and then getting mad when someone inevitably knocks her ball away.

Date: 2007-08-30 06:57 pm (UTC)Man, it's hard to keep up with all the different crew!kids in all their different versi. And I noticed Wash wasn't dead yet, which I found happy-making.
Also, remember your Jack/Martha wishfulness? I've not yet met Martha, but I still second it. Anything is better than Ianto. I think that's partly because Ianto looks like a tall Killer, so it weirds me out. I do love his name, though. I want to name my kid that I'm not having Ianto.
And, umm, hooray! for request!fic. I was supposed to kill that harlot what ran off with Jayne from right under River's hands in fic, but I always felt kind of guilty about doing that to someone else's OC. Hmm. No, there still aren't any bunnies there. Or otters. I keep checking, but they're not there. Damn it all to Canada.

Date: 2007-08-30 08:58 pm (UTC)I love Nettie's crush on Mal. It's just so perfect and understandable and so painfully unrequited. As for the croquet, I just couldn't think of any party games they could play. "Musical chairs? No, that would start a fight so fast... Pin the tail on- No that's lame. Um. God, I don't know. Croquet? Who the hell would have a cro- NOVA!"
