Because I was feeling cruddy today, I decided to write completely self indulgent crap. This is a product of a discussion with
katsqueaks so of course it's nutty. She helped bring about River in a Carmen Sandiego hat, after all. :P
Title: You Can't Stop It...
Author: Toxic Corn
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: I own nothing except the kids.
Spoilers: Takes place in the Songs From a Firefly 'verse.
Summary: Vee regarded Mal solmenly. "You can't stop it..."
Mal had taken it upon himself to drive the girls into town. There was some big stuffed animal bazaar or something on and Nettie and Nova wanted to add to their collections. Lady seemed a little old for it but she said she liked to look and would watch little Anna. Vee was along for the ride simply to get off the ship for awhile and he couldn't say that he blamed her.
"You meet me right here at 4:00, dong ma? Your parents'll mutiny if I try to come home without you, so pity an old man."
"Sure, Cap." Lady lead the girls into the crowd of people, holding Anna's hand as the little girl waved bye bye excitedly.
Mal turned to Vee. "I got a contact to meet on the other side of town. You comin' along?"
"Is there gonna be shootin'?!" Vee asked excitedly.
"No, it's just Monty. There shouldn't be any."
"Awww."
Mal rolled his eyes and started the mule up. The day was sunny but not too hot and he started to smile. He liked being out in the black and all but it had nothin' on being planet side during spring time. Nothin' short of a rain storm could ruin today.
"Cap, I have to go to the bathroom."
"What now?" He needed to be across town and they were already running late.
"I've started."
That was girl-speak for... oh go se.
"Oh, god. Okay, we'll find a bathroom. Just… just hold on."
Vee turned and regarded him solemnly. "You can't stop the flow, Mal. You can never stop-"
"I'M NOT LISTENING!"

Five minutes later, patrons of Pete's Diner witnessed a pretty dark haired girl dash inside and head straight for the bathrooms. The older gentleman she was with sat out in their vehicle, clutching his head in his hands. There's debate over what exactly he was saying but the consensus is the bulk of it was, "Why me?"

"That is the LAST time I cart those girl's asses 'round town. From now on, their daddies can take 'em places; Cap is officially retired!" Mal pointed after the kids dashing off to their rooms and scowled.
Jayne sat up on his weight bench, taking the towel River offered him. "Why? The hell happened?"
"I'm never speakin' of it," Mal said through clenched teeth.
"Vee started her menstrual cycle," River said, smiling placidly.
To Mal's dismay, Jayne snorted. "What, that all? They all do that."
Mal twitched. Sure they did but he didn't need to know about it.
Jayne continued, "Aintcha ever noticed they all get crabby the same week?"
"I have to leave now and… leave." But Mal's distress somehow kept him locked to the spot as River and Jayne stared at him. "So I'll just be doin' that. Right now."
Vee, Nettie, and Nova entered the room just then, chattering. "So then I saw that I'd soaked clean through and the machines were all out of-"
Mal dashed off so fast he practically kicked up dust trails.
Jayne and River looked to Vee who held up a t-shirt. "I spilled some orange soda on it earlier today and the laundry mart was out of soap. What's his problem?"
